Sony hikes up PS5 pricing in April: PS5 – $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99 PS5 Pro – $899.99, Portal $249.99

When MS increased the prices for Series consoles i had a suspicion this could be coming for Playstation. I have a feeling it's only a matter of time until Nintendo does the same, maybe even right at the start of this next fiscal year as well.

Well that's how you kill the sales momentum of a 6 year old piece of hardware.
Even with GTAVI i have a feeling PS5 might not sell much more than like 12M consoles this year.

I think Nintendo knows how crucial it is for this holiday to maintain the current prices; especially in comparison to what Sony is not selling PS5 for. I'd take the hit if I were them.

And to think that there were people thinking the DRAM and Nand crisis would not affect console prices.

The only generation I remember where console prices go up rather than down over time. Ridiculous.
Pretty sure it is.
N64, PS1, PS2, 360, PS3, were all dirt cheap 5 years into their life cycle.
This is when consoles usually start doing massive numbers because of low price and large library.
Times are changing I guess.
Just another industry only targeting the top 10%.

Sony gotta get cash for keeping bungie alive from somewhere, and it wont be from marathon coz its huge flop, so with effectively 0 competition from xbox, nasty price increases in pc hardware market, they smelled out the blood(their customer's blood ;/ ) and keep biting harder and harder into this open wound :messenger_ok:

Alright.....French dude was right. Not going to change the fact that he was an unknown source.

Anyway...

Those prices suck. Glad I bought my Pro at launch.

This is very frustrating. This should have been the stage already of price going down to entice more customers and also nextgen is getting near 2 or 3 years from now. This is BS. Im very dissapointed with Sony. Well your ps5 pro is really like gold this days if you have one.

Mate, I'm gonna go hug my Pro and I ain't even kidding 😁
(My PS Portal also).

Unbelievable man, just unbelievable...
1200€ PS6 incoming

I can't believe I have fully moved from "This thing is a rip off" at launch to "This is an absolute bargain"

What a generation, haha

I've been following the console gaming industry since the late 80s... even with all the crazy shit like 3D0, Jaguar, Sega bailing, etc... it's never been as dire as it is right now. It's nearly unbelievable that the new initial buy-in for a game console is now $600... thats a fucking iPad at this point. If there is no dad or mom in the family that likes video games you are going to have generation(s) of kids who grow up without game consoles.

Don't worry guys, that AI investment is going to trickle down any time now.

EDIT:
Its not just RAM prices. The plastics that are used to make the PS5 and the various components in it come from oil.
I wonder what's happening right now that is affecting global oil prices.
Though plastics is probably a small amount of the BOM, the rising energy prices also make manufacturing more expensive. And general supply chain shocks caused by the closing of the Strait of Hormuz.

How do you increase the price of old technology.
Make you wonder what they'll want for new tech

Bizarro world continues with 6 year old consoles more expensive than they were at launch.

Rockstar has to be pissed. They're Current Gen only and GTA 6 will not pull the numbers that GTA5 did due to a stagnant userbase.

This is both the cost of the AI arms race and game developer's mindset that they can just throw more memory at a problem.

This will impact PS5 sales. PlayStation is a hardware business so it will be interesting to see how they make up that revenue. Day and date on PC?

They saw base PS5 struggling with games and they still increase the price.

Tell me, who kinda of retarded still think this is the best generation ever?

The only game that force me to buy a PS5 was Astro Bot.

Yeah it's short sighted stupidity. Effectively killing their own future.

Man I'm glad I got a PS5 Pro at launch and a Switch 2 three weeks ago. Because no way in hell Nintendo doesn't do the same. It's fucking ridiculous.

Surely thats the reason of the console price increase... Marathon still living rent free in some peoples head i see
We are totally not having a huge logistical and resources nightmare that will be written in history books. It's all *check notes* Sony gaas games!!!!

This thread. I swear.

Scalped at the start by scalpers.
Scalped at the end by Sony.

I think they are trying to keep PS5 components to melt down and use in the PS6's.

This is going down as the worst console generation.

And it just keeps getting worse.

There are now news, that the AI boom is now affecting chip production so hard, that CPUs are next to get massive price increases.
And that also means that console SoCs will probably be affected.

PS6 launch price is so cooked.

Nintendo needs to do whatever the hell they can to hold at $450 because that's the only thing that will sustain Switch 2 sales.

Sony lost the fucking plot with $900 Pro.
Nintendo also lost the plot at $450. Left the impulse buy territory and they are damn lucky PlayStation and Xbox have priced themselves so far out of the market. Switch 2 couldn't compete at nearly the same price but now... Now they probably can, the problem is $450 isn't going to last long.

G'damn man, this, so much this...

I remember seeing the Pro go as low as 660€ on some 3rd party, smaller shops thinking "well, fuck me" (after having paid 800€ on Amazon).

Who would have thought that...

Anyway, at this point, I hope the PS6 isn't out until mid- 2028 at the very minimum, let the Pro cook I say

Man those Black Friday sales here in Canada look insanely good in hindsight. Equivalent of $325USD for the digital model and $375USD for the disc model.

Kicking myself for not just pulling the trigger...

Nothing that was done back then to reduce costs works in the current landscape.

What a joke. Nearly six hundred quid for a console whose successor is already being spoken of with more regularity every passing month 🤣
