Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

We got Alinea saying 1.2m and some in here were saying 2.5m.
And on the Marathon sub.

So many times I saw "Steam has sold 1 million and even being conservative consoles have probably sold at least 1.5, the game is doing great, also I'm having a blast!!!!"

The funny thing is they can't even celebrate a million sold because it would point to the game massively underperforming.

Interesting thing to point to is Arc Raiders has bled a fuck ton of players, and their roadmap is non existent. Their big prized pony streamers are also moving on due to next to no content and what they added was a joke.

https://steamdb.info/app/1808500/charts/

I'm sure Bungie would love if that was their numbers right now, but I bring this up because there IS a chance for a game to swoop in to nab the Arc players.

On paper marathons road map shits all over Arc in season 2:
-New map
-New enemies
-New storyline quests for the factions
-New weapons
-New implants and cores
-A new runner shell (class)

That's a very good roadmap compared to arc adding the same fucking robot on various maps. Arc is just there to sell skins every week nothing else at this point. It's a ship without a sail and a captain not at the wheel. Baffling how bad they are blowing it.

I'm put of the loop on them on this front. What have they done?

  • Creation of Black@Bungie employee inclusion group.
  • Creation of Women@Bungie employee inclusion group.
  • Creation of Trans@Bungie employee inclusion group (to uplift trans and nonbinary staff/players).
  • Creation of Latin@Bungie (or Latinx/Latin AEOX) employee inclusion group and associated Hispanic Heritage Month post.
  • Hiring a dedicated Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) leadership team and reforming the internal Diversity Committee.
  • Official confirmation and heavy narrative focus on Saint-14 and Osiris as a romantic gay couple (including kisses and dedicated story moments).
  • Introduction of gender-fluid/nonbinary-coded character Nimbus (Cloud Strider).
  • Character Micah-10 with explicit "two dads" backstory and identity-focused lore.
  • Multiple Pride Month events, including free Pride emotes (e.g., Rainbow Connection), pride shaders, trans awareness items, and donations to trans causes.
  • Annual Pride shader packs and in-game cosmetics with profits going to LGBTQ+ organizations.
  • Internal character model/design reviews by the Diversity Committee (leading to adjustments in player/Awoken faces and bodies).
  • Broader narrative push for LGBTQ+ representation and identity themes in expansions like Lightfall, Beyond Light, and The Final Shape.
  • Public support for BLM-related messaging, anti-harassment initiatives, and industry "inclusion" statements.
  • Androgynous or non-gender-specific character designs in the new Marathon project.

Knowledge is a curse indeed.

So when will the layoffs start and how many get laid off?

There will be layoffs, for certain. With confirmation that those are the reasonably accurate sales figures, Destiny 2 on life support until June(if it makes it that far) and a small, yet steady decline in players on a daily basis, things are not looking great for Bungie.

Do I think they close down? No, but I don't think they escape all this unscathed.

They're clearly trying to get sweats away from the casual players who are dropping like flies. Lets see if the sweats actually do stick to those or if they go back to pub stomping.
They are doing the headless chicken thing from south park to see what sticks ... just awful planning all around this whole projecf

Man... remember when games were made by a bunch of nerd programmer dudes and tattoo'd up artist dudes who were just focused on making badass games. Good times.

It's the same as trials - wihtout the sweats being able to go back into regular crucible and dominate they're going back to the extraction shooters they were playing. It's already in a death spiral.

god damn.

Theres plenty that still just want to make good games but it's these fucking studios like bungie that forget where they all came from.. The small teams are going to be the ones that become the staples as the years go by

Imagine paying $40 for a multiplayer game and being told when you can play which modes, especially something like a Ranked mode. Wow. The industry is abysmal.

If it peaked at 44.4k yesterday, and the game is hitting new lows as cryo did zero, doing it's usual -5% weekday spiral will make this game go down to about 42k today. and if it keeps doing that till Friday/weekend rebound time, the game will definitely peak under 40k one of these weekdays.
Hey I was right! The peak today is 42k!

So about -5% vs yesterday's 44.4k. And -24% vs last Tuesday at 54.4k (similar server down day).

It bottomed at 13.7k late night yesterday. So given the trend it should hit about 13k flat tonight when it bottoms out about 6 am hour. This game almost always hits a bottom at 6 am, then trends back up. There is possibility it drops to the 12s.

As a ballpark, this game trends down about -5% per weekday, but then goes up a bit on Fri/weekends. When Monday comes around, the week over week trend vs last Monday will be about -20%. Cryo day did absolutely nothing to retain gamers going forward. It did a big Friday bump (+18%), but lost it all by the time the weekend and Monday rolled around. So looks like people were amped up to try it, but bailed fast.

Where's the Indian@Bungie and Asian@Bungie groups?

You could tell right off the bat something is off. The company used to have free cooking and knitting classes for employees. The company stopped it to focus on gaming and reports said some employees complained or got demoralized. Goes to show what kind of people work there.

I remember. Letting "everyone" into gaming was a mistake. Most games are shit and there is a saturation. Luckily, it's not very hard to spot a decent game. There are that many bad ones, IMHO.

Yup. Every long time gamer remembers those pics.

And going a few steps further, those old pics had small teams in modest offices. By the looks of it some of those old pics, it looked so ratty it looked like some were made in someone's house and getting by eating pizza. Somehow a small team could make a whole game on a shoestring budget.

Now, it's gigantic teams, modern day tech legions better than 1995 gear, they need to be pampered like kids, and some reason they like bringing their personal lives to work and product. Add it up, and they got shitloads of time, money, people and the games can be junk.

How much did a big budget game cost to make back then? I dont know. Maybe a couple million here or there? Now a big game is $100M+, with even modest games still $50M.

A wild swing how the industry works. You dont get this kind of difference in other industries.

Hearken, ye merchants of fleeting delight and peddlers of Free-to-Play greed: the mighty fortress of Fortnite now crumbles, its battle passes and seasonal lures failing as the golden rain of coin slows to a drizzle and the hordes grow restless.

Thy reckoning draweth nigh, ye lesser lords who chained players with microtransactions and endless obligation. Thy servers shall empty, thy earnings wither, and the players shall remember true ownership - the fall of Fortnite is the first tolling of the bell. Thou art next.

SIgned,
Sir Fuckalot

Given today's peak finished at 42k, at a usual -5% attrition rate tomorrow should be about 40k. Possible it hits the 39s. A -7.2%+ would be needed to hit the 38s.

Remember when this would have been one mode of many for a full priced AAA game not even 10 years ago?

We never knew how good we had it.

And remember the gems among those that had so many modes yet you never even tried them all because you became so enamored with one or two for dozens of hours?

And probably all shooters back then had SP campaign too.

Also, some modern shooters have offline bot mode MP (COD does). So if youre tired of playing MP against gamers and just want to make custom matches for fun without any XP or leveling up, you could just goof around playing against the CPU to practice, test gunplay or just chill. Even when I played old ass Unreal Tourney 25 years ago had this.

Now they cut corners and need to force in MP gamers in to entice mtx purchases for sake to impress other gamers staring at their costumes or loot boxes to help pay to win.

Marathon Steam review % dropping.

Now ranked past the 5000 filter. To see it, you have to chose All in the filter.

Here's similar reviewed games. If it can scrape up some good reviews it might prop up and surpass Mr Pumpkin 2 and its 108 peak CCU.

Review % doesn't matter unless you add on the filter to set a minimum hours played

They still do the classes... it just went from monthly to quarterly, but the last report was from 2023, so who knows how is it now.

Also all that bisexual lighting, the rocks on Kepler had to be pink as well.

Dumbfuck devs

Tomorrow Marathon peak will go under 40k to 37-38k. As in clockwork they loose around 2-3k players a day. For weeked it will probably stay at 42-43k range but after weekend on monday it might even scratch 30k at peak.

At this rate bungie might shut down game in two weeks. If it goes under 20k in two weeks there is a point where cost of infrastructure+maintance will be higher than money they get from microtransactions. And that's not counting extra work they do to add more content rn.

Next monday will be brutal.

In general 1 ccu at peak ~ 10 sales. So 100k ccu peak ~ 1 mil copies sold on pc. Crimson desert had 260k peak and they just announced it sold 3 mil coppies.
