Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

"I feel like I wasted the first 100 hours"
🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Bungie needs to get rid of the RNG stuff for this map. It's stupid. They've referenced it in the first few hours after it launched, so hopefully they address it. Quitting a game because you get your ass kicked is a choice though.

Still no reviews huh?
It's Sunday my guy lol. I'm sure they'll have reviews out this week.

"I feel like I wasted the first 100 hours"
🤣😂🤣😂🤣

I listened to half of it and quit.

Sounds like a pain in the ass mode thats way too complicated and RNG. I thought it was simply a locked down mode on weekends, trios and you need that list of min character spec to qualify for a run. Then you and two other people all qualify and you rush through a hard mazey level to the boss and that's it. And of course you got competing trios in there too. Similar to a Diablo 3 Nephelam Rift map. There's no real weird shit you got to do in the map except plow through it till the end boss. Beat it, grab loot and portal out.

But it's Bungie. So they expect their gamer base to grind it out like Destiny. The Bungie guy even said the purpose was to grind it out on weekdays so a cryo run can be done on the weekend like a special event. So instead of your typical shooter where you play different modes popping in and out when you feel like it, they want cryo to be a grindy mode you got to ensure you got the gear and all these passkey shit to get through doors or whatever. What a grind.

They are already doing the classic "we're listening" response.
Tbf, that started on week one, but it's Bungie, so listening doesn't necessarily mean anything will change.

But yea, that RNG is brutal.

I remember in Destiny 1, Bungie introduced a change riiiiight before launch, where purple engrams didn't drop purple loot anymore. White, Green, and Blue engrams still dropped appropriate colour loot - but not purple. Instead, purple engrams were changed to have a veeeery small chance to drop purple loot. Why? Because Bungie realised players would burn through their content in about a week, so they decided to lengthen the grind enormously at the last minute. They'd hoped it would let the game last longer. Seems like Bungie still doing Bungie.

I remember that. I thought it was exotic engrams having a chance to drop purple.

RNG has no place in this portion of Marathon though. People need a reliable way to work towards gearing up for Cryo.

Remember when video games were fun to play? Remember when that was the mission? Now look at games like Destiny and Marathon. Look at how developers like Bungie and their corpo overlords just design games to be money grinds. It is sad and disgusting and while I do not fault anyone who is enjoying the game, I will be happy to see when games like Marathon die and we can get back to getting video games that are designed to be fun to play, not to "engage" and "recur" and "transactions." While not every game needs to be made for everyone, these limited time events and grinds are just another in the long line of modern mechanics that are disrespectful to customers and gamers.

I remember that. I thought it was exotic engrams having a chance to drop purple.
I think that was in place, too, but that was a separate change. The "purple's dropping blues" really got traction when the first loot cave was found. People farmed huge quantities of purples and realised "these almost always drop blues?". Classic Bungie
RNG has no place in this portion of Marathon though. People need a reliable way to work towards gearing up for Cryo.
And Bungie needs a reliable way of making their content last. Making the map accessible for 48 hours, filling it with RNG, and pretending it's an "event" is just classic Bungie. And once the player counts drop, they'll actually implement things properly.

I never played Destiny games (except barely dabbling with D2 when it was F2P but noped out fast when I saw random online gamers popping up in my game), but that's the nature of GAAS.

All comes down to what game mechanic the studio wants to do to make GAAS money and stretch out gamer retention game time. Some games like COD dole out new maps, playlists and stupid looking skins as their way of retaining gamers. Bungie's approach seems to be more of a meat grinder way where content is locked or RNG its way till a gamer gets the trinket to progress.

Bungie's way is kind of similar to Diablo, but something like cryo is locked until gamers can spec up or find the right keys or whatever. Diablo is all about RNG loot too. But when I played it way back (maybe it's changed now with the million updates theyve one), main content isnt really locked out from gamers in a RNG kind of way (Nephalem Rifts were locked out until you beat the game then it's open forever), it's just the loot is as people grind away to find best items to keep.

Bungie goes a step further. You got the loot RNG which tons of games have, but also game progressing RNG items, and gated weekends.

If they want to make cryo a harder mode for trios, that's fine and all. Just make all the passkeys in the map so you explore around, kill bots, find the keys to open the next part of the map. Really no different than any game going back 50 years. The keys are all there. You just got to explore or kill some enemies a bit to grab it. Its your fault if you get killed or missed a key on a dead body or chest 4 rooms back.

Woof man. I feel for the folks actually enjoying Marathon for this.

Eh, some people like the sweaty hardcore nature of Marathon.

I don't. I play games to have fun and enjoy myself, not work a second job or to punish myself. The extraction genre as a whole isn't tailored towards me, yet I love the hell out of Arc Raiders, but then that game has purpose built mechanics to make it approachable and enjoyable for the less hardcore gamers. Judging by the player counts for Marathon I'm not alone in that sentiment.

I'm sure their internal plans go something like "players will spend the week grinding for keys and do cryo runs on weekends". That's just not how any of this works though.

And yeah. Get the RNG out of this. Have specific events on each of the 4 maps for specific keys if you want, but have a guaranteed way to get one.

I think a bunch of the backlash is simply due to expectations. Everyone knows an extraction shooter is different than a traditional shooter with 8 different MP modes and 15 maps to choose from. But I think gamers avoided it and some gamers who already bought it are trending down is simply due to expectations.

Bungie is known for:

- Sci shooters Halo and Destiny
- Accessible games with tons of maps and MP modes (I'm even ignoring Halo SP and lore)
- You can be a shit gamer or a godly gamer, you'll find something about it you like to play at any time of the week

Marathon is:

- Sci fi shooter
- Extraction maps and a cryo map
- A hard game with an even harder cryo map that requires minimum specs, keys or whatever to progress all the way, weekend play

Extraction will turn off lots of gamers right off the bat. And cryo will turn off even more. And for the gamers who are hardcore and dont mind boosting up to do weekend cryo runs, how many of them like this RNG key thing? Not too many. But they did this assuming the grindy hardcore crowd will love it and stick around. Similar to a Destiny gamer or Diablo gamer meat grinding all day for good loot drops.

It didnt help cryo has been gated with so many parameters and difficulty. I think everyone just assumed it was a harder raid map and that's the only difference out there. But it was way more than that, and Bungie didnt tell gamers the full details till just earlier this week at the last minute.

At this point... The game is what it is. The changes that they will have to implement ASAP are just to stop the bleeding. The money and time required to transform this game into somehting truly great that transcends a hero shooter in the extraction sub-genre will not be worth it, especially when making another 4 maps, 4 shells and 4 new enemies, alongside the other things required (new weapons, loot, puzzles) won't be cheap either.

Wait, how many self-revives can one player have at one time?
As many as you want. They don't stack though. So someone could technically bring a gold backpack(40 slots) and fill it with nothing but self revives.

But it takes 2 extra seconds to kill someone after you down them, and then they can't self rez

I'm always a bit shocked at how bad this game looks.
WTH were they thinking?
They needed an idea for a sci fi shooter and couldnt replicate a Halo or Destiny look or else it'd eat into Destiny sales.

In 2020, a bunch of Bungie people followed that online artist and plagiarized her style (including that Bungie guy with the green shirt who looked miserable in their apology video), fonts and colour scheme. I dont think they copied the character models (might be wrong there), but given the art style and colours, they took that and made colourful blocky guns and characters to go with it.

They went for a style they thought gamers can meme it on tik tok. When you got odd looking characters with tape over their mouth looking emo with attitude, it's the type of art that might take off on social media compared to your usual boring COD or BF solider dude holding an M4.

You can tell because whenever Bungie tries to promote the game it's all about flashy character pics and crazy trailers with great lighting, while never really even promoting the actual gameplay.

Some stuff for the future of the game:

-They are looking into solo options for cryo
-Working on changing the RNG component to it
-Potentially more free kits to allow players to come in and learn it

-Ranked is honestly amazing as is, and while not being focused is for me the true long term carrot

-They will add new story missions every season so you aren't repeating them. (Huge if true)

—-

There's some good shit going on here if the game keep on going. Throw a campaign in here in a year and it'll be a keeper. It's Legit the best extraction shooter but man is it sweaty in its current state.

Yeah... Don't count on a campaign. The rest will only work to stop the bleeding

Show me a GAAS game with over 30k reviews and a Steam User Score over 85% that failed? People enjoying the game is what spreads good word of mouth. It is how GAAS games over time can succeed, even with poor launch CCU's

And pretty much all GAAS games lose players after its first two weeks. That is the norm. Saying otherwise is completely disingenuous. Marathon's numbers are not catering by any means
^^ This. Nuff said.

Bungie again proving they put too much faith in their own community and then get surprised when the reality of the numbers don't match their projections. Many times in D2 where we had live events that bungie had tweak the number or tickrates for completion, otherwise it'd take too long for reach certain goal. Fellwinter's lie quest was like that. Guardian Games had to tweak the numbers in favor or Titans and Warlock because there were always more Hunters everywhere (not to mention that the time they tweaked hard in favor of Warlocks, they still lost it). Oh, and can't forget the time people couldn't for the love of the game find the final step to solve the Niobe Labs puzzle and Bungie had to just give up and open the door to all players.
Bungie tends to make things a little too grindy. They probably need to stop doing that.

There Their mistake was as most have said, hanging onto D2 for too long and not moving to a d3/d4, D1 was perfect base game and 3 expansions.
D3 wouldn't have solved anything. Destiny 2 just needs more content and Bungie needs to take more risks narratively. They play it too safe story wise. Once they establish a formula, they stick with it for a looong time, when they should do that and experiment with gameplay loops, change it up slightly every now and then, to keep it fresh. That is what they need to do instead of give us D3 where we will end up having the same issues later on. D3 will simply delay it, not fix it.

Yup. If they made D3 4 years ago, the last 4 years of D2 would have been D3. Bungie currently has no idea how to move Destiny forward. I'd rather they figure that out before they make D3, otherwise the exact same problems will persist

Yup, I feel the exact same way which is why I don't get why some think D3 will auto "magically" fix everything lol.

I played around 70hrs mostly solo and sometimes with a friend, had a pretty good time.
But cryo not having solo as was well as ranked really turned me off.

This game is incredible and it is weird how many people are praying for its downfall.

It is a legit 9/10 experience and for once a AAA studio has designed something with an uncompromised vision that is not for the masses but for a very specific type of player and it really resonates.

There are no aggressive mtx, there is technically a battle pass but you forever it's even there. Unique and awesome music/art direction. Gameplay that does not hold the player's hand but is deep and rewards skill. An interesting story told in a completely unconventional way. Released at $40. Concord 3 this is not. They managed to make something wholly original, complete devoid of anything "woke" or predatory or derivative.

Totally fine if it is not for you, this is not something that will resonate with most players, but if you give it the time there is actually something truly special here and I honestly feel like we should be celebrating big swings like this instead of delighting over the idea of it dying. But because it is Bungie or multiplayer or an extraction shooter or some combination thereof, some will call it trash, and those people are wrong.

The obsession over this game to fail is kind of weird, I've played plenty of bad games and this just isn't one of them

There are things that need to improve, some of them asap, my last two runs in cryo got screwed by RNG for the security cards and I still have no clue how to even do the first vault

Ranked is pretty unique and fun and gives that risk reward gameplay

Best part is just the players I've met, not had an extraction sitter where most player I team with randomly just communicate and play to try and get as much loot and escape, during that paid have tense fun gameplay moments

Either way I hope it survives, has alot of fun and it's got potential

Problem isn't the game, is what it represents. There's an assortment of people with different reasons to hate this and want it to fail. From general dislike towards bungie - as there are no shortage of reasons to hate bungie - to disgruntled Destiny players or...

...general distaste towards live service games in the modern industry, or in some cases Sony's push towards live service games specifically.

Every time a live service game dies a miserable death, especially ones like this that should've been high profile ones, it gives other studios (or Sony in particular) further reasons to invest on more traditional models and single player titles instead of continuing their endless pursuit of becoming Fortnite 2.0.

The past week, the ballpark ratios between a daily peak --> the low late night is about this:

Weekday peaks to the low that late night = 3 : 1
Fri to Sat, or Sat to Sun = 2.5 : 1
Sun to Mon = 3.5 : 1

Both previous weeks, going from Sun to Mon, the peak dropped -14% each.

Todays peak was 53.7k. If the drops and ratios hold up, it might be this:

The late low tonight = 15.3k (53.7k / 3.5)
Monday peak = 46k (53.7k less 14%)
Monday late low into Tues = 15.3k (46k / 3)

They won't increase investment in single-player games just because live service fails. Instead, they'll reduce investment across all game development, shut down even more studios, and make their financial reports look even more impressive.

Only the ones too far gone will follow this route. There's still hope for some others, at the very least the ones still making traditional games will be less likely to try and invest in live service. All let go talent will also go on to join these other studios, or fund their own.

Pretty much. Failed GAAS studios are easy to cut.

But you can see it goes beyond that like Bluepoint where they could had just had them go back to making remakes/remasters or as an internal studio doing more support roles like they did for GOW Ragnarok. Instead, they'd rather just cut them despite the studio only having around 70 people.

If that rumour is true they will be cutting SP ports to PC (might be bogus), expect Nixxes on the block next.

I'm baffled that people are surprised

Super niche game that had virtually zero hype leading up to it

Hopefully Sony finally learns and focuses on what made the brand great instead of GaaS

No doubt. At least with ARC, it was a big first mover for extraction (Hunt and Tarkov were never hyped up like ARC, and Tarkov isnt even out for consoles), it has a better art style, and I never got the sense watching videos it was a super twitchy game with endless bot enemies and MP enemies roaming around. Watch Marathon videos and it's a faster paced extraction game with gunfights with bots and enemies like it's COD or Titanfall first person shootouts.

It's really just a simple tree the weeds down the player base......

Total gamers -> Shooter fans -> Extraction fans -> Shit showing last year and stolen art -> Crazy Mirrors Edge and Lego art style -> 3 maps -> Hardcore sweaty game -> Cryo map is meant for harder core gamers -> Ranked and cryo are weekends only, and trios only

Add it up and how can this game expect to get tons of user base? And the studio expects the CCU to grow on top of it too? I think Sony/Bungie assumed their branding + popularity of Destiny fans would translate to big sales where extraction gamers jump on, and lots of Destiny fans jump on too. It's Bungie, it's a shooter, it's sci fi with some GAAS grinding, so it should do pretty good.

Just imagine how much worse it'd be if the game released in its original state last year.... it looked worse, no solo mode, no prox chat.

They butchered the game to hell. The original game's first two stories red war and Foresaken are gone, planets are gone nothing is consistent. They basically took a game which was built for a few years and have reworked it so many times it doesn't resemble anything. You can still go back to d1 and play from the beginning to rise of iron and most of the game is intact.

How do you onboard people to d2? You can't without missing huge gaps. D3 needs to go back to the first where all the content is available and was left in a finished state. D2 is just a mess. I'm not saying int the d3 doesn't need to change something's up. But as seeing with marathon they are learning. So what Cryo is hard, it just came out. This happens with every fucking raid, plus the game is PvP based it's not supposed to be easy. But over time more people will be successful. Comp mode was never easy nor were the first iterations of trials but people played it. They aren't doing anything different here.

Remember when early in D1, players found a random cave that would endlessly spawn enemies so they would sit at the entrance and just shoot the constant spawns for loot?

Bungie patched that in less than a week. Couldn't let the players have too much loot or they would "finish" the game and quit lol

Self revives should have never been a thing in an extraction game

This will be a brutal week for Marathon

Yeah, agree DBNO doesn't make sense in a 'hardcore' FPS. But then can't have the streamer trio's crying. They need a safety net. I didn't even realise you could just fill your backpack with revives either. What a mess.

Self revives are a non issue.

If you down someone you can:
-Finish off with a single knife thrust animation which will also heal you
-Can shoot them to finish off
-Use abilities or utility to finish off

The self revive:
-Makes a loud noise as it's happening so you know player is doing it
-Takes a long while to wind up and go off
-Only restores them at like 15-20% HP(which is like 3 bullets downs them again lol)

It's there so people can't abuse certain tactics like oh I'll buy a sniper and just camp exfil from a very far off safe space when they go in.

That might be fine for singles and maybe duo's but even knowing from BR playing with a team who suppress makes resurrection pretty trivial. Again though, thats what Marathon is focused on.

It obviously has a purpose, otherwise it wouldn't be in there just to be trivial. Would you object to having it removed if it's so pointless?

Also self revive for a sniper (i.e. spawn beacon) is exactly how that scenario can be abused?

Its purpose is as I said - prevent people from just camping like assholes far off with snipers when you try to exfil so they take 0 risk to just melt you. The self revive means you could crawl to cover and revive to prevent a sniper wipe.

It isn't overtuned, and gives folks a chance to get back into a fight if say they get melted without even being able to fire a bullet back.

It isn't trivial but it isn't busted or makes the game worse by its inclusion.

And let's say you take that sniper out, who is sitting on a pile of self revives? What would they do?

It creates the opportunity now to rush them. Again they recover with 15-20% HP and will need to heal shields and HP to even be able to fight. Instead he's going to have people on his ass ASAP. The wind up takes like 8-10 seconds to go off.

I'm speaking firsthand with over 100 hours played in solos duos and trios - never has someone getting a self revive off against me felt OP or bad.

Nor is anyone even discussing them as an issue in the community at all.
