[Digital Foundry] Mark Cerny confirms Frame Generation is coming to PlayStation at some point in the future

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
"Great questions, particularly considering that FSR Frame Generation is technology that was co-developed between SIE and AMD, we're intimately familiar with it," Cerny revealed. "All I can say is that we have no more releases planned for this year. And that I look forward to discussing this more in the future!"

Good news.

Sony.. this is not how you hype up PS6.

PS6 better be more than the "oops all machine learning" that GPUs are becoming, and detrimentally so in my opinion.

One of the reasons why I still like gaming on console is because they're not optimized around jank-ass features.

Hopefully this also means Sony is porting Antilag 2 to the PS5, to compensate for the extra latency that Frame Generation brings.

So its Generation F now?...
Good Burger Reading GIF

My prediction has been that future frame gen is what will allow the PS6 to hit 240 and even 480 FPS using HDMI 2.2

Cant wait to see it 😄

Maybe Sony can fix that weird thing older Framegen games do where the UI elements have double vision. World looks great but the arrow above your quest giver shimmers.

They're not hyping up anything.

Dude specifically said not expect anything this year. That's the opposite of hyping up. He's subtly telling people to calm down and don't expect anything anytime soon.

The future may disappoint you lmao

How is it bad news to add another feature? Some of you need to get used to technologies being adopted and used. I use FG on a 5090. Where is the outrage?

As long as it's optional it can't hurt I guess.

Seems like all gaing tech is going that way.
I can already see the marketing.

"PS6 is 40X more powerful than Ps5*"
*When comparing fake frames at fake resolution vs native framerate and resolution in select games on PS5

Mark Cerny also responded to recent reports of a Sony patent, which speculated that a prospective "PSSR 2" might employ adaptive AI quality, minimising the need for dynamic resolution scaling in favour of adjusting upscaler precision instead. In DF Direct Weekly #253, we suggested that upscaling cost is already so slight that there'd be minimal improvements to frame-rate by using this technique.

"In February many noticed a patent regarding ML-based upscaling ("varying precision of weights and activations"), which led to dozens of articles, but that concept isn't part of the current PSSR/FSR work," Cerny stated. "We file many patents during the course of business, not all of which relate to released systems or future products."
Well, that settles that.

Frame Gen going from the most despicable piece of shit tech to goated miracle of engineering in 3, 2, 1...

Only justified to have some form of Path Tracing at 60fps, or to satisfy 120fps people. Otherwise, as far as I'm concerned frame gen can fuck right off.

Another piece of technology stolen from Nvidia, where would the graphics industry be without them?
Normally I would agree with this, but Sony started the whole idea of 4K upscaling with checkerboard, and they've been leading (by margin) the frame interpolation field on TV for decades at this point. Their Motionflow still consistently wins every shootout.

I used it in a few games when i had a 3600X CPU and it's great in cases where you are bottlenecked by it, after that with a better CPU, i tried it in games like Kingdom Come 2 which isn't too fast paced and i ended up prefering not to use it.

I guess it depends on the game and the user's sensibility to the input lag, but for example keep in mind PS5 is supposed to last another 4 years or more, and there are a few cases already like in Crimson Desert where it has drops.

A PS6 with a tech that could use framegen in cases where you get drops like in cities etc would be a nice future proof for the console, i bet it'll be a selling point for it, with PSSR3 and some other stuff

Hasn't this been the case for the entire current generation?
99% of it despite all the doom and gloom that 30fps is making a major comeback any day now. Most of the 1% that is 30fps isn't even for any major technical reasons and usually gets updated to 60 down the line anyway, just smaller developers caching up. (I'm Looking at you Digimon)

Fake frames cross gen for 6 years sluggish to zero first party output.

Why buy a PS6?

And this coming from someone who has owned EVERY PS at launch or within a month of launch

Also their frame interpolation for PSVR

The answer will be, PS Exclusives - After a very hard fumble this gen, I think they'll get back to business next gen.

Them moving away from PC and going back to PS Exclusives is a good first step

Because that thing of they having zero first party output is a blatant lie and like every generation they'll continue having a lot of great first and 3rd party games.

ALL the exclusives will be on PS5 for at least the first four to five years of PS6.

So again WHY buy a PS6

I'm also doubtful of any PS renaissance as ND looks to be shoving down left wing propoganda with its latest title. And they are still delusional about chasing GAAS bag plus ZERO competition.

It's hard to believe how good DLSS frame gen has gotten. When it first rolled out I tested it for five minutes and quit in disgust. Now I enable it in games like BF6 and Arc and forget it's even on. As long as your base frame rate is 60+ you're golden, especially if you're using a controller which is already a latency sponge. Always nice when the PC state of the art finally starts tricking down to consoles. Of course some devs will abuse it but that's on them.

Of course, this is AMD, so you better hope and pray they have their shit together in eighteen months because their frame gen is nowhere near NVIDIA's.

"Fake frames" fake lighting, fake geometry, fake pixels, it's all fake. Just shut up.
