Fresh off the news that the The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess decomp project is 100%...let's talk about the other decomp projects in the works...as its why retro gaming is making a comeback! Plus we just got Banjo Kazooie Recompiled too!

Decomps featured: Silent Hill 3 decomp, Halo Decomp, Legend of Mana Decomp and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles decomp!
  • 00:01–00:42) The video introduces four retro game decompilation projects currently in early development, highlighting how reverse-engineering old games can lead to improved PC ports, mods, and preservation.
  • (00:42–01:50) – Silent Hill 3 (PS2)
A new project aims for 100% byte-matching decompilation of the game's code to better understand the engine and potentially enable a modern PC executable with higher frame rates and improved graphics. The project is extremely early, at ~0.9% completion.
  • (02:14–03:10) The heatmap of the Silent Hill 3 project shows most modules still untouched, but some functions are already fully decompiled. The creator hopes all Silent Hill 1–4 games will eventually receive similar treatment for modern PC play.
  • (03:10–05:22) – Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
Despite existing remasters, a Halo decompilation project has begun. Reasons include preserving the original version, allowing enhanced PC builds, and supporting community experimentation. Current progress is about 2.25% decompiled.
  • (05:22–06:16) The Halo heatmap shows many unprocessed modules due to the complexity of Xbox architecture, though some sections are already fully reverse-engineered.
  • (06:30–08:05) – Legend of Mana (PS1)
A decompilation project for this classic JRPG is underway. These projects are not only for ports but also help research the game's internals, potentially enabling speedrunning strategies, exploits, and technical analysis.
  • (08:05–08:58) Legend of Mana currently sits at ~2.95% decompiled, with some components like CD data decompression nearly complete (≈99.7%), indicating early but meaningful progress.
  • (09:17–10:55) – Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (GameCube)
Another active project is decompiling this game using a version containing debug symbols, which makes reverse engineering easier because it reveals more information about how the game's code is structured.
  • (10:55–11:48) All four projects have been updated within the past week, showing active development. The creator emphasizes that although progress is slow and uncertain, decompilation efforts could eventually create hundreds of native PC ports of classic games in the future.

The Silent Hill 3 PC port is pretty good with a couple of mods already. Not sure about the best way to play Halo though.

I thought SH3 has a very solid pc port with some mods, still function great on modern pc. A RTX remix for SH3 probably make more sense?
