[Bloomberg] Sony Pulls Back From PlayStation Games on PC (Ghost of Yotei port and other internally developerd games scrapped)

Episode 2 Whatever GIF

As someone with a PS5 (mainly used by my gf to play indies and an occasional AC games) and a high end PC, this won't make me buy games on PS5. But maybe I'm in the minority, maybe Sony will see a boom in sales.

A faction within PlayStation has also expressed concern that releasing their games on PC risks damaging the console's brand and will hurt sales of the PlayStation 5 and its successors, according to the people familiar with Sony's inner workings.

Things that weren't announced are cancelled, but some games will continue to still release on PC, but probably not big single player games, unless things change and we don't actually know for sure.

Great reporting…

Just further goes to show that Sony has no idea what they're doing with Playstation right now.

So now you can play

  • The Last of Us Part I and the Last of Us Part II on PC, but not the eventual Part III.
  • Horizon: Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West on PC, and LEGO Horizon Adventures (??), but not the eventual third game.
  • Ghost of Tsushima on PC, but not it's sequel
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, but not it's eventual sequel
  • Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy, but not Uncharted 1-3
  • God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarok, but no future God of War games
  • Spider-Man 1 and Spider-Man 2, but apparently not Spider-Man 3 or Wolverine
  • Returnal, but not Saros

I don't begrudge them for this move but between this, all of the cancelled games, the studio closures, the GaaS stuff and all of the failures there, the apparent re-focus on single player games again, the hit-or-miss TV and movie adaptations, etc.. etc.. just makes the entire enterprise feel rudderless.

tl;dr

Sony themselves wrote several times that their PC strategy is to entice players into PS5 and they will value every PC release individually. There's no need in that in the latter half of the cycle.

Plus it hinders internal development where the minimal target is PS5 that is still more powerful than the majority of modern PCs (Steam Machine included), later more demanding close-to-the-metal ports like Spider-man 2 and R&C were problemaic because of this.

Nixxess will be fine with GaaS and support, they are not a creative team to begin with.

It's Schreier again, the guy who was certain Veilguard was a huge success. I'd wait for Sony to comment before rushing out and buying a PS5.

Noooooooooo
Well at least we got Ghost of Tsushima on PC.
I was hoping to eventually get rid of my PlayStation hardware but I guess I'd be wanting a PS6 at this rate.

Is Yotei as good as Tsushima?

Listening to Schreier talk about this last week, he clearly is guessing on this. One evidence he gave was that Wolverine was announced for PS5 only this September.

Oof......thinking of Nixxes employees right now

Weren't they responsible for Horizon remastered? They did a good job and there's a literal treasure trove of old stuff that could use similar treament and they'd have projects for decades. Of course I could have said the same about Bluepoint...Sony doesn't inspire too much confidence these days when it comes to making the right decisions but one could hope.

This was obvious with the launch of the steam console and xbox likely having steam support for the next generation.

Theres more value in keeping the exclusives in the long term on PS5 only, with possibly PC releases way down the line (3-5 years).

PlayStation saw a lot of people like me going "well why do I need a PS6? I can just wait a year or two instead."

It's not about getting PC Bros to buy the console, it's about keeping their longtime users buying consoles and subscribing to Plus.

In some ways Yotei is a much better game... some phenomenal side quests and story telling in there.

good point, with Valve releasing defacto consoles, they're making moves into Sony's "turf", ultimately why would Sony help Valve at this point.

How does someone explain the absence of something other than it's not there? It's on you to provide where there are examples of wokeness.
I just finished the game, it's woke, just not retarded woke like Spiderman 2... no point in derailing the thread though.

Hoping Sony has enough work for them either way. They have got to be worried reading this news right after what happened to Bluepoint.

Yeah they have been releasing ports of uninteresting games. accept TLOU
so Doesn't make a much of difference to me.
i was interested in their Ip's like killzone, motorstorm, resistance etc

Nope, it wasn't. Stop listening to Twitter retards.

I don't rely on social media opinions to form my views. I prefer to judge things for myself based on what I see and hear. In my opinion, the game does show some elements that feel woke even if it's not as egregious as other games

One of the main points for me is the protagonist. She's portrayed with a very strong, assertive attitude, and at times it feels like the male characters around her are written to appear weak by comparison. That dynamic stands out a lot throughout the game. We have seen the same pattern with other woke games

I also question the historical realism. A female samurai single handedly defeating large numbers of men in that time period doesn't feel especially believable to me. I don't have any issue with women as main characters, that's not the problem. My concern is more about how the character is framed and whether it fits the setting in a convincing way.

Saying there are absolutely no woke elements at all seems dismissive. Even if people disagree, I think it's reasonable to acknowledge that some aspects of the game can be interpreted this way

You are the one who made the assertion that it is woke. It's up to you to back it up. I thought you didn't play the game.

You seem to have trouble with short term memory my friend. I remind you that I rented the game and played it at launch. So i know first hand what this game has to offers

Smart move by Sony

This actually makes me not sell my PS5

Now - Sonys upcoming slate looks like shit, except Saros…. But still smart

yea sony has been a mess under the hulst/ryan leadership, but releasing one game on pc didn't obligate them to the platform forever and it seems like the meltdown of their initiatives ahve triggered a wide ranging soul searching that was needed.

somehow they're still funding fairgame though.

Whelp, looking bad for Nixxes.
Live-service games would still be getting ports, plus they've also expanded their area of expertise into the realm of remasters with the 2024 re-release of Horizon: Zero Dawn, which boasted the largest visual overhaul out of all PS4 first-party remasters this generation.

As a playstation games fan(not brand fanatic) who didnt feel much reason to buy ps5, my ps6 purchase, even if it costs 1k bucks at launch, looks more and more probable, simply coz more actual exclusive high quality games means i get more value of my ps6 purchase.
Still plenty time left to launch ofc but i got cash for it already(same for next gen nvidia or amd card if they are any good- aka not 5k usd msrp or only 20% improvement vs my current 5080).
Currently i know i will defo get demons souls, astro and gt from ps5 library, hopefully by the holidays 2027/2028 it will have at least 5 more high quality exclusives :)

Why Steam? Steam is probably a bigger threat to Xbox/PS than each other at this point. Glad Sony recognised this.

I don't think MS cares about console sales as much as just making a lot of money and their games will sell gangbusters and make them a lot of money on Steam. This news probably won't even dissuade them releasing for Playstation either.
