Marathon Server Slam (Feb 26 - Mar 2) 𝙄𝙩'𝙨 π™Žπ™€ π™Šπ™«π™šπ™§ / π™’π™š'π™§π™š π™Žπ™€ π˜½π™–π™˜π™

If you're top 10% you can easily 1v3 in this game. TTK is ridiculously fast.
Until you roll up on a purple shield user. I got the drop on a vandal with purple shields and unloaded 30 bullets and he got my green shield no issue. Vaporized me.

This game's visual design is offensively ugly.
After playing the server slam for 15 hours I can wholeheartedly disagree. The aesthetic is spot on. There is no way realism, cartoon or other such design would do it justice. It's like saying No Man's Sky would be better if it had photo realistic graphics.

I don't mean to pick on COD but every game you play pretty much plays the same. I could write stories about my epic games in Marathon. As I type this I'm still a bit shaky from my last one. Best MP game I've played in years. This is a special game.

I think the game is growing on me.

Tried non stop runs yesterday with Rook, died a lot. Then, slowly I started exfiltrating. With better and better loot.

Any other class solo was even better.

Unsure if I should get day 1. Have Helldivers 2 and Space Marine 2 already installed. Need to get to them as well.

Will get it on first sale I think.

It's expected. Now we wait and see how Bungie deals with it.
After dying in a game on Saturday and spectated for a bit with a player that I thought was really good, I was amazed how the player was able to down enemies at range without looking too precise in his aim, but it was when they unexpectedly turned on a dime to shoot an ankle biter acid creature at 2m away, I assumed they were a tester and knew the prebaked AI actions. but seeing those lines on the cheater in that video, I'm now thinking I was spectating a cheater.

I didn't get a chance to play the server slam. I was hoping some of my regular teammates would want to hop on at some point but it didn't happen. Arc Raiders was kind of the same way. I played a little bit of that solo but didn't find it interesting.

I guess the question here, to those who are enjoying Marathon... how is the solo experience? Would it be viable as a total solo queue game? I'm just looking for something that can be played purely solo (as in no-fill) and has a reasonably high skill ceiling. Seems like kind of a tough get in the FPS world right now.

Managed to play a few games yesterday. It's been many years since I've played a multiplayer game so wanted to see what the fuss was about. Not really sure what to make of it. The gunplay feels pretty good and I dig the aesthetic. There's so much information to take in when starting and with no clear objective it felt most of the time that I was just ambling about. Found the item management really overwhelming, there's so many different items to pick up and so much text that there's no time to read while playing so had no idea if what I was picking up was good or not.
Not sure what other people's experience was but I didn't play a single game where anyone was talking. So didn't feel like there was any teamwork.

Sort of a mixed bag for me. Would like to get into a multiplayer game again. The bones look pretty good but feels like this game requires a lot of communication so is more set up for playing with friends rather than strangers. Maybe with full release it'll improve as it'll be people playing who have actively invested in it.
I'm on the fence at the moment.

Visually looks fantastic on my calibrated C8k.

Konami showing the way with eFootball being free-online
WRT PSN, no F2P games require PS+. This has been the case since like forever. And why, well because Sony gets a 30% cut of all MTX (as is the case with other sales as well).

Should online play be free? Well, yes. But eFootball not requiring PS+ is not because of Konami.

Kinda true tho.

There are so few games in the AAA space that have taken a stylistic swing like this. It's drawing on so many influences outside of just games - 90s graphic design etc. It's something a lot of gamers are frankly not equipped to process or comprehend. I'm not trying to just dunk on everyone who dislikes it - we all like what we like - but if anyone out there does actually think it looks like Minecraft or Roblox, I almost feel sorry for them. Missing out on peak because they can't comprehend it.

This is the biggest hook of extraction imo. They do it even better than battle royales did. Your CoDs, Halos, hero shooters etc. they start blending together sooner or later. I can't specifically remember too many of the thousands of rounds of Halo or Battlefield I've played, even though I love those games. But with Marathon and ARC and Tarkov etc... the epic moments stick with you, and they generate a lot of them.

This UI is just atrocious though. Just a mess of icons, text, numbers, button prompts all over the place. And then text and numbers all over the environment too lol.
This is NOT what people are referring to with bad UI. Nothing in that shot is bad, or unable to parse what it is immediately.

The UI is bad when it comes to things like the vault, or looting body armor item that have the exact same icon yet you have to read what stats they effect and what special ability they have. Thats what folks mean by bad UI.

Honestly my biggest gripe was with the mods. I believe you couldn't remove them from weapons until recently and it shows. The mod management is a mess. The inspect weapon section helps but you can tell it was added late on.

Jump in.

Yep. The Ui issue stems from loot.

Plus the vault page just looks cheap IMO when the rest of the game is far more visually appealing.

The image he was complaining about has 0 issues.

Lower left - your health/shields and teammates.

Top left - time left in match.

Top- compass

Bottom your abilities and their cool downs.

Top right-objectives for you and teammates.

Lower right - Grenade slot, ammo, weapons.

Gun shows ammo count, and that scope goes to a regular scope when you aim down sight with no weird black white cover.

I enjoyed the core loop, but I dont think the game is tuned for solo players overall.

I love the solo loop and ending up playing it the majority of the time.

Learning how to accomplish missions, making choices entirely on your own, no yapping just listening and methodically playing. It's awesome. I hate the comparison, but it gave me the same reward feeling as Elden Ring where you grind against impossible odds and everything is hard at first but then it becomes easier as you play more thoughtfully. Skill respects skill.

When you die you can load a new match extremely quickly especially if you're Rook or running a sponsored loadout. I would smash my keyboard super click after dying just to get back in and into the fight. Turnaround time is maybe 30 seconds? Faster than the respawn in high guard and quicker than any other BR or Extraction Shooter I've ever played.

Which UI is best when it comes to Escape from Tarkov, ARC Raiders, and Marathon (the 3 most successful Extraction games)

I think a case can be made that Marathon has the best UI out of all 3 and this "bad UI" discussion is people believing a complex genre like Extraction should have menus that are as simple to read as Valorant or Mario Kart.

Welcome to the big leagues boys...you're going to have to think a little here.

I'd have to disagree with that. I found Marathon's UI confusing and cumbersome to read. Arc's UI isn't perfect but its much more friendly than Marathon's. I never had the strain using Arc's UI that I did with Marathon's.

That's fair. I wonder what consensus would be once Marathon is out for a bit.

The good thing is it shouldn't be too hard to make the UI more user friendly if they wanted to. I'm not sure enough people had issues with it to warrant that though.

I have played in teams and solos. Solo play is my favorite because the experience of sitting around and reading lore bits from completing contracts. The eerie music setting the tone to set the vibe. Loading into to complete a contract is so much fun because everyone playing is on their own mission and players have to decide how to handle things. One of my contracts I had to blow up a comms tower and there were robots surrounding the objective. I kept thinking about how I could sneak around them and not make noise because trying to lay low felt like an option. i was able to sneak around and completed the contract, but I alerted the uesc robots at the last minute. Due to me fighting and making noise I made a run for it so i could hide and collect myself. Which in turn lead to me running into another runner. We were able to communicate with each other and I tried to negotiate a trade for items for my survival. It didn't work out unfortunately and we fought. It was thrilling. I mean even planning how to navigate a run is so much fun before executing on a plan. That unpredictable nature and immersive storytelling is what was driving me to keep going back in. I found enjoyment in single player through just one of my experiences I shared here. Team play is a different dynamic and I encourage both play modes. I still stand by wishing that they had a offline single player campaign to help give us something else to do besides multiplayer, but overall what they have here is awesome and I can't wait to play it again.
