ARC Raiders PvP >>>>> Marathons PvP

I dunno if I am too stupid or some genius but I genuinely cannot understand why so MANY are having issues with the UI. Yes I agree it could have been designed less "in-universe" and gone with a more standard approach but perhaps it is my time with Hunt Showdown, Warframe and recently Wuthering Waves but the UI took me 2 minutes to get used to in Marathon.

It literally requires less clicks to get your gear ready compared to Arc Raiders lol.

My major gripe with it so far is the TTK. I feel like even on bog standard shields it is simply too fast.
I think those games skew your perspective because those UIs are dogshit and extremely convoluted, so when you play anything not completely abhorrent you think it's fine. Hand a WW or WWM or Warframe or any of these gacha type games to a gamer who doesn't play these games and they'll be instantly lost and weeks in they will still be finding things they didn't know existed.

What happened bro
He woke up. Hype every shooter until you realize it is going to fail, fall back to the one that succeeded.

Played for a few hours last night. 95% on PC, and a few raids on PS5 Pro.

  • Gun play feels nice. This I expected since I like Bungies FPS controls
  • I like the two maps. Nice variety of indoor and outdoor areas.
  • Can you have more than one contract active at a time? If not, that is retarded.
  • UI is awful, too many different screens. I get factions unlock different things, but having skill trees across multiple pages is not great.
  • Audio is not great. Could not hear 75% of the other runners moving around. They tout that audio is key, yet the audio is shit.
  • Not sure how people are having a hard time with the AI. Unless there are other ones on more difficult maps, they seem brainless and easy to flank, etc.
  • The Medic Runner is great. If you are not running one of these in your group, you were born to fail
  • I hate their radial menus. Why do I have to click to make something active? Just let my cursor select it.
  • Hate that I can't back out of looting without hitting ESC. Is that the only way?
I will play some more this weekend, but it is not grabbing me like Arc did.

A large percentage of fights in Marathon are ruined by some insane design choices. I don't know if it's 20% of fights or 50% of fights but it's somewhere in that range.

1. We loot for the first 7 minutes and don't see a soul other than some UESC bots.

2. "OMG an enemy player!"

3. Either they die instantly or you die instantly. There's no tension or build up.

4. It's a 3 v 2. Now you can actually start making some interesting decisions but it's 100% dependent on your loot and character class. Hopefully you have some interesting abilities / loot that can help you now but if you don't...it's your thumbs vs their thumbs / arms.

In ARC Raiders, just about every PvP fight gets you thinking "Oh if only I did X, Y, or Z there." In Marathon most fights get you to think "If only I hit my shots there."

Good luck if Bungie thinks the bottom 40% of the skill curve is going to stick around for that. And good luck thinking the mid skill players are going to like getting dunked on once the bad players quit.

I still love ARC Raiders, but 90% of PvP is each player hiding behind a corner or wall and using the camera to see who makes a move first. Then usually whoever has more grenades wins the fight.

That has not been the case with me. I have watched some streamers where they really abuse grenades & c4 but my lobbies never looked like that.

Well i played a match and I don't dig the "pick up garbage that don't know what is for" mechanic. Maybe is the cornerstone of extraction shooters.. if so. Easy pass.

Hate games with tons of stuff to pick up but can't tell if something useful. I don't care for using items from the menu too. Is my health complete? Do I have enough shield? I leave the tutorial knowing shit.

Shooting felted nice. I would much preferred a 10 hour campaign with arena/deathmatch/capture the flag multi-player for 40 bucks.

Yea dude I find the whole formula of so called extraction to be so fucking annoying.

The only thing that lands for me is the dark zone in the division. The idea of going in to get cool gear FOR the main pve game makes sense, but sure it your current run goes bad that's fine but you're not losing every single thing. But give me a reason outside of just extracting to go in

I agree I can't stand this little shit that you don't even know what you're grabbing, ah it just annoys me thinking about it

The game is growing on me, there are indeed things Bungie need to tackle right away. First is differentiating bots from actual players. Second is speed up the pace of the game and the third is fix the UI explaining what items in the field do.
yeah am I not supposed to know what's a player or npc??

Voice Chat does not seem to work at all on PC. Worked fine on PS5 though.
There's people complaining about it on the bungie support forums so yeah. I just don't get how this game is supposed to launch a week from now and they still have so many issues going on... might as well delay it again.

After Arc Raiders came out, it seems people got re-excited about Marathon again for no reason and based on zero evidence, because Bungie didn't release anything. And now it seems like It's Over-chads are feasting again.

I am also in the Arc Raiders PvP > Marathon PvP. The movement alone in Arc makes it superior. This is coming from someone who much prefers 1st person over 3rd Person for PvP.

This isn't a particularly entertaining game to watch streamers play. Going to Impact the longevity of engagement for sure. I watched Peanut's first stream of it a few weeks ago and was bored to tears.

I think its mostly a time to kill thing.

In Arc you usually have time to think and react, even strategize a bit during a fight.

In Marathon the fight is over so fast you barley have time to even know what is happening. At least that is how it was for me so far.

Fights will have more time to breathe once people have leveled up to better shields. TTK is really short with starting gear but it won't stay that way.

its the bland, boring menu-based meandering that plagues all extraction shooters.
When I hear stuff like this it reminds me of my friend who plays fromsoft games and could never beat them. Then I told him he didn't have to fight every fight and every battle and could choose to run sometimes. He was just like "What? You don't have to kill all the monsters? You just run?". I just ignore the menus i don't care. I get as much loot as I can, extract and move on. Tried to do my contacts etc.

I think with these games some people get so caught up in the inventory and menus instead of just saying who cares and start playing the game.

LOL, the menus and the inventory are where your progression is. You plan on putting points into your skill tree in-game? Plan on figuring out what items you need to turn into Faction #7 to get better gear while fighting AI?

I don't really get the (entertaining) contention between this and Raiders, they're both just distinct and quirky enough that you'll probably see people casually bouncing between the two down the line.

They'd both benefit from an increased interest in the extraction shooter genre.

I don't really care. I quickly glanced at that and moved on. I only want more space and don't have the items for it so moved on. My faction was leveling up just from going in and doing extracts. That's my whole point I don't need to maximize my progress. I just started playing why would I get heavily involved in all these menus. I'll get into all that later right now I'm focused on learning and leveling my character.

What is the game without the loot? It's literally the crux of any sort of progression.

What is "playing the game" if it's not staring at 100 menus so you can get lucky that a flimple or a gongle shoop spawns in a random crate that I search everytime i play the same map 100 times.

Yes like I said I get in, get my loot and get out. Move it to my vault and go back in. It all seems very simple to me. The game auto sells a lot of shit and I move on.

I tried it last night for a few mins. I really like the art style and the surround sound was pretty good. That said extraction games just aren't my thing.

I read a comment on a stream somewhere's that described the game play loop as:

"Raiding modern art museums foir garbage in the middle of nowhere"

I laughed but I can't unsee it now.

I haven't played, but I agree this is rough

As a graphic designer I actually enjoy it.
It's got a very avant garde look to it. There is definitely something to be said for cohesion but I like the chaoic design work personally. I know it's not for everybody though.

Lmao in trios I die non stop. Have yet to make it to exfill.

Back to solo I go.
Really? I'm probably 60/40 on making it out alive. Your team has got to be doing something wrong.

so wouldn't that make my original comment of bland and meandering even more poignant?

because you aren't even interacting with the game's core gameplay loop. It's so unfun that you'd rather not interact with it and just go shooting.

Dawg he's just saying he's learning by doing instead of trying to memorize the entire loot table right off the bat :messenger_tears_of_joy:

But what are you getting loot for? Like in destiny we knew we got loot for raids and pvp and all these activities, what are you even looting for if you can basically lose it at any point?

Lot of mewling about Ammo online but after one evening I'm running out of inventory because that stuff just won't stop dropping for me. Free Sponsored kits come with an ammo box and it's more than enough.

And?? what does that have to do with what i said.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

People seem to be complaining that they're bogged down in menus and trying to learn what a hundred different mods, augments, items all do. But that's not the right mentality to have when you're just learning a game. Marathon makes it much easier than most other extraction shooters to equip a gun and some ammo/consumables and get into a match. No Tarkov autism. No Arc Raiders fifteen minutes of crafting junk every time. It's very streamlined and you pick it up as you go.

It's not that the "core gameplay loop" isn't fun, it's that you can certainly make it unfun by worrying about a hundred different pieces of loot and bogging yourself down in menus early on instead of playing the damn game. Load into a raid. Grab stuff. Maybe take a minute or two to look at it and move on. Approach it with a sense of curiosity and discovery, not like cramming for an exam.

If you don't like this kind of game then Marathon will not change your mind but in that case what are we even doing here?

My life is over. Its like if I won the lottery and commissioned a game this is what I'd make.

That said the onboarding is horrific and it's absolutely brutal.

I'll enjoy while it lasts.

you should read my original post, then giving the benefit of the doubt.

also its a free server slam i'm allowed to give my opinions of the game in a thread about peoples opinions on the game. This isn't a safe space for Marathon lovers only.

you get geared up for your next run so you can dunk on people. Use currency from vendor trash and materials to progress the faction trees to unlock upgrades for yourself and complete contracts.

Your original post said you don't like this kind of game to begin with, yet multiple people here have given you the benefit of the doubt and tried engaging in good faith and all you've done is disingeniously hide behind "I'm just giving my opinion, bro". You're not interested in having a conversation.

Whatever, your continued shitposting is time out of your day, not mine. Have a good one.

I said it's the same as other games in the genre, which are bland and meandering, and this one isn't any better (because I played it and gave my opinion in the opinion thread for people who haveplayed it), which is what I'd hope for in a Bungie product, a better game with more life and much better design.

What conversation would you like to have? Would you like me sit here and just say yes and agree to everything you say?

shitposting = doesn't agree with me....
