Marathon Server Slam (Feb 26 - Mar 2) 𝙄𝙩'𝙨 π™Žπ™€ π™Šπ™«π™šπ™§ / π™’π™š'π™§π™š π™Žπ™€ π˜½π™–π™˜π™

I like the gameplay but I don't want to deal with the fluff in between matches.
I feel like a rogue like would have been more enjoyable to me, or an actual campaign. I miss halo co-op

Early impressions: I say this as one of the biggest Bungie and Destiny fans with over 7,000 hours on both D1 and D2.... This game is not fun. It really is not.

  • The famous Jaime Greisemer "30 seconds of fun" loop that is present in just about every Bungie game since Halo: CE, feels like it's missing here. Even as extraction shooters go, Arc Raiders feels way more fun as soon as the game begins...this game is just boring from the get-go.
  • The visuals feel extremely overstimulating and almost every single building look identical. You get bored by the locations and the terrain pretty quickly. The aesthetic makes me feel like I'm on a acid trip (not a good one).
  • The UI/UX is an absolute mess and way too busy. Most of the items you come across to loot all have this similar looking ugliness to them which makes it hard to point out what is what.
  • To provide more context on the gameplay side of things... the PvE enemies feel mediocre to fight so far and It's rare to come across other PvP players. In Arc Raiders, just about every enemy gives you that "OH SHIT" feeling and PvP can happen at any moment which adds to the excitement and tension. I have yet to see this in Marathon

I REALLY hope Destiny doesn't die because of this game. Destiny is a one of a kind game that basically doesn't exist anywhere else.

Not going to bother playing it. Not my style of art.

IMO, I think a lot of people will play or avoid Marathon not based on gameplay or it's made by Bungie. But simply due to polarizing bold sci fi art style. You love it or hate it.

Finally in game. Haven't really played since the initial May test and a tiny amount in October. I think anyone complaining about this UI being obtuse or difficult to use is legitimately retarded. There's really not much to it. Also the visuals are so shit in compressed YT or Twitch vids but so nice when you're actually playing.

.... My feed went form "Marathon is so peak, aura farming, aesthetics, the music made me gawdg, haters went missing, even haters are loving the game nowi." to this.

I still can't belive how much trouble I'm having to enter the game....again... Indie (the bad indie) vibes with this one.

*Sigh*

I waited nearly a year for this and can't believe what I'm playing.

The UI is absolutely hot shit, someone activated a robot in my party that obstructed a chunk of my screen the entire match I've played. Seriously, the ENTIRE MATCH I had a credit card sized robot in the top left of my monitor. It's like someone took CODs box ridden UI and decided to make it worse and more colorful.

Too many healing and debuff items for the heat of the moment. There's enemies that will absolutely fuck your shit up with no indication of their power levels till you're downed repeatedly.

No way for you to just die and come back to your party. Maybe I'm spoiled by Helldivers?

I like the story they hinted at about a ship vanishing for a hundred years and getting a distress signal enough that I wish this was a single player game strictly to explore that idea but it reminds of that joke of a story mode for the original Titanfall for anyone who remembers that.

I'm not trying to be super negative but I'm hoping more gameplay this weekend gets me hooked otherwise I'm just going to pass because the actual shooting, shells and traversal I love but it's wrapped in a seriously messy UI.

Played most of the evening not sure I like it. Maps are tiny and you never seem to run into anyone but NPC's who drain your ammo of occasionally a player squad will come out of nowhere when you're fighting the robots.

I just got out of the opening and I am already out I think, feels so lifeless, feels so empty, the whole idea of exploring just to possibly lose it litrelly fucking doesn't sit with me and I gotta just realize this niche genre of extractionisn't for me, it really isn't. The whole concept is such a depressing style of game I hate it.

If I was to play any extraction it'd be arc raiders but I couldn't stand that game either.

Just killing the enemies I did made me yearn for destiny. The menus, the tiny little items, I just don't care about any of it at all and I promise I am not one to just shit on a game just to do it, I disliked every moment of that opening I don't even want to go much further.

Finally got some time into it, unfortunately not as much as I would've liked. But I'll get more in soon.

There's as much lore here that I was hoping for, which I felt would not be met. I'm honestly pretty happy with everything I've come across so far. The immersion, sound, gunplay. That could change with more time, but I've enjoyed what I've played so far and look forward to playing more.

It's just cool to care about a Bungie game at all considering I personally didn't care for the Destiny series.

This will come with more time in the game, but I wish it was easier to identify what shell you were up against by their silhouette instead of waiting for them to use an ability.

Feels like an indie game compared to ARC. Wild

And I bet Marathon cost twice or three times as much to make than Embark spent on ARC

People are really used to the yellow paint gaming nowadays thats the reality. There is 0 willingness to learn anything and if its not a super dumbed down UI or system, people are getting confused and calling it bad.

I watched some streamers and they are so fucking dumb its hilarious and their chat just parroting the same thing. Todays online gaming culture is a cancer

Be that as it may, I think it was a mistake for Bungie to tackle a niche within a nich; They should have gone for a more accessible experience. Even if Marathon were to capture an audiance of its own, said audiance would not be large enough to sustain Bungie until Destiny 3 hits. An incongruous, frankly bizarre choice...
Well, Sony will probably have to write-off a few hundred million dollars. What a mess!

This game comes across indie in comparison to Arc.... And probably it was twice or even more expensive to make πŸ’€

Blaming Spider-Man GIF

I'm finally able to play.

Coming from the alpha I cannot believer they kept some of the lore pages as just cryptic green must read boring nothing. I thought they were placeholders….

Also I see why movement aim feels bad. You gotta jack it up asap in settings on console. Wasn't this low in alpha.

Only played one match with a a group. So far I'm liking it way more than I thought I would. Waiting to put my son to bed before I play more. I triggered something in a base and we got swarmed by bots and died. Using triage for now which is great.

Solo play is rough on the cheeks.

Really just wish it would funnel combat initially like arc does.

This just so far has lead to me dying not sure if it's a bot footsteps or player while I try to heal.

I really don't get it. Arc had approx. one morbillion pieces of shit and junk to clog up inventory and about twice that of garbage to craft and waste fifteen minutes between runs. But people are complaining about THIS inventory UI??!!

I don't want to live on this planet anymore. Putin, press the button.

For you guys talking it feels indie, how?

I'm not going to bother playing it. But just going on face value, the production values look AAA with bold art style. So that alone should make it a step above indie graphics.

It doesn't have photorealistic UE5 slopshit visuals and expensive mocap cinematics etc. so it's not really aligned with GAF's tastes.

I can kinda see the point though. Everything about the presentation is very minimalist. Destiny had expensive cutscenes etc. and and generally dwarfs this game in scope. It's gonna turn people off. If it eventually comes out that this game costs a billion bucks to make I'll be scratching my head. It really does feel like more of a side/passion project. Which would make more sense if Destiny was still going strong, because this won't appeal to a lot of fans of that game.

You think you're just used to the UI since you've basically been playing it off and on for a year?

I genuinely don't think so. According to Steam I have less than ten hours in the playtests combined, and most of that was almost a year ago (the UI isn't the exact same as it was then, either, although pretty similar).

I found Arc a lot more overwhelming at first compared to this.

I think some people get in their own heads with this kind of game. I've watched it happen in real with some of my friends. Nobody should be stressing about their loadout and every single thing they pick up when they're just learning. Just go in with your gun and some ammo/heals and learn the basics. The early faction missions walk you through a lot of the mechanics and locations too.

I don't get it either. Arc had the same damn menu and people are acting like this somehow different. It's the same shit to me.

Reading across social, seems like a generally pretty negative sentiment on the actual gameplay and mixed responses to basically everything else. I think Bungie are in legitimate trouble here.

And hopefully it bites them bad, they litrelly shit on the destiny fanbase when it's so fucking hard to have a live service game in which they broke that barrier and had a game that lasted 10 years and people wanted another 10 years but instead they shit all over it and put it on auto pilot and here we are.

From what I seen, it's just kinda bland as fuck lifeless world, not a fan of the style going on with the bright colors, and the UI kind of sucks.

Good shooting is the best I can say about it.

I feel like there's too much stuff being thrown at me and the screens are too busy. I feel overwhelmed, I hope a get more comfortable.

The Marathon UI is taken 2 steps too far, it's overdesigned. Reminds me of those art pieces where they just put a chair in a room and nothing else.

Destiny isn't going to die because of Marathon. Destiny is going to die because Bungie ran it into the ground after years of abusing their player base.

If Marathon succeeds at all Bungie will still be there to fuck it up too.

Destiny might survive because of this. Bungie needs space from D2 to work on an actual step forward with that game. Bungie is also running on financial fumes. This game needs to hit to give them. the breathing room they need to fix Destiny.

They've shown they can't do that otherwise.

I think it's a well constructed multiplayer game, graphics are really next gen. Gunplay is good.

You have to play this game very slow and clear rooms and corners. It's a very sweaty game.

I can't say I was personally having fun playing the game though.

Personally this extraction shooter genre might not be for me. This game is probably fun if you have a group of friends to play with.

Just got off work can anyone give me some summarized initial impressions from this thread?

Even if people love this game, I really don't think it's for me as everything I've seen about this game makes it seem like it is very very sweaty

The more casual nature of arc raiders is one of the reasons I like it so much

I think the game itself is good if you are into extraction shooters or competitive multiplayer games. It's a sweaty game for sure.

The UI is pretty bad, very confusing at first.

Graphics are really good.

Can someone answer this tho have they said what end game is? So you have good runs but what is the end game goal? Genuinely curious

Like any other hero shooters, the end game will be not enough player count to support the cost to maintain the game.

Look at Concord, so much story to tell, yet prematurely ended.

This isn't friendly. Its been exclusively shoot on sight in my experience.

I think the game is fantastic. I've been looking forward to it after playing the tech test last year and so have known what to expect. I get that it's not for everyone but I'm loving it.

Had 3 runs of success dunking on other players in solos now. Getting my groove. Guns are blue tier now. Have a purple drum mag taking a 20 ammo count gun to 75 in a clip!

I need this to be said but menuing takes too much of your time in the match because of the "scavenging/scanning" containers and stuff. It shouldn't be that slow, even if the game's pace isn't that fast (can't say the same about the time to kill).
