Well, now we know the hype was just astroturfed.

Fucking hell, going in solo is brutal. I've managed to complete 3 or 4 contracts but I usually get mullered before I can get my arse out of there. Not only do you need to contend with relentless AI, including annoying fucking jelly crab things, but some sneaky bloody players too.

I think if you have a decent team who enjoy the grind of extraction shooters, then there is fun to be had because the gunplay is decent. Otherwise, it's a really hard sell, and certainly not for me.

Game feels horrible to play (at least on a controller).

Just gave it a go on the pro for the last hour and I'm not going to waste my time with this. Sluggish movement, brain dead AI, the artsyle lacks heirachy so it's difficult to see at a glance what's lootable and what's not, the UI is beyond awful and again has heirachy issues, sound design also lacks heirachy so you can't tell if a noise you just heard is important or not.

Honestly, it's a mess. What a waste of time Bungie has been for Sony. How we didn't get a last of us or days gone extraction shooter instead of this crap I'll never know.

I'll just be honest I loved destiny, would've played it another 10 years if they didn't just abandon pvp and change direction in so many other ways so I felt like as a long time fan and customer they fucked me over, they gave me no choice but to leave that game and I want them to fucking totally regret putting the golden goose of live service games on the back burner. I want them to just realize what time they wasted trtin to jump off into another echelon of gaming.

Was gonna say that it seems absolutely unwelcoming to solo players

Interesting comment about running around.

In the alpha I asked other players and made the comment of "is there only one other team on the map? Seems like a bad idea. Needs 3-4 groups of 3s always."

No one ever chimed in from what I recall but I swear I only ever fought against one group and never got to initiate or was third partied.

Is it changed now to at least 3 teams?

People are really used to the yellow paint gaming nowadays thats the reality. There is 0 willingness to learn anything and if its not a super dumbed down UI or system, people are getting confused and calling it bad.

I watched some streamers and they are so fucking dumb its hilarious and their chat just parroting the same thing. Todays online gaming culture is a cancer

I'm still excited for marathon but all the things you mentioned or others are were absolutely told to Bungie many months ago by myself and others.

They likely priority stacked and ignored these issues not realizing these were the critical ones - UI especially and player onboarding. You have to have training wheels on before you let them loose lol.

Thats the state of MP games- you get your one shot and that's it. My prediction still remains that this is a 10k-20k concurrent game depending on seasonal content drops.

They can rectify all these issues but it won't matter. Internet made up its mind.

Open beta tests devs. 6+ months in advance, and get real en masse feedback and fix before launch.

Marathon is too smart for gamers is an interesting new cope angle.

Marathon would've had a better chance to succeed if it had launched before Arc Raiders, which brought more attention to the extraction shooter genre and raised expectations. More ppl can point out flaws which they may not have noticed if they had no other game to compare it to.

It really is. There is even a prompt that warns you that solo play is more difficult.

Why does it need to be more difficult? Why couldn't Bungie have at least balanced the game better for solo players?

I did try playing with a group of 3 but nobody was talking and they were just doing their own thing anyway.

Figured I'd share my thoughts. No rhyme or reason to how I'm putting them in just typing as I think so sorry if it feels disjointed.
  • Played through to Level 10
  • Steam - PS5 Pro - Xbox Series X and mix of Mouse/Controller (DualSense, DualSense Edge, Xbox, Xbox Elite Series 2)
  • Most of my time was playing as the Triage and Assassin Shells.
  • Triage is awesome especially in Squad play. I like being able to send out little medic drones for my squad mates. It also allows me to med and shield my teammates when my drones are out just by med-ing and shielding myself. I haven't gotten a chance to use the "ult" yet though but I believe it allows me to remotely rez my teammates.
  • All squad fills as none of my friends have gotten on yet
  • Nobody talked besides one person even on Steam but people pinged a ton and did text chat
  • It's hard to break the habit of reloaded for the energy weapons and I've wasted so many batteries
  • I think I much prefer controller which honestly doesn't surprise me as I think Halo and Destiny also play better on controller BUT looting is definitely better on mouse. I still can't get the hang of switching out weapons on controller properly.
  • PS5 Pro looks absolutely amazing and from what I can tell PS5 Pro and Series X are completely locked according to my monitor and my TVs frame counters but I know that isn't 100%
  • PC performance isn't what I expected really though. I have a 5600x and a 4070 Super. Playing at 1440p Max Settings and DLSS Quality I was getting like 100 FPS which seems lower then it should be but that is with everything maxed out.
  • Gunplay feels great IMO.
  • UESC can be very dangerous if you aren't careful. A couple times my team definitely over extended and we got fucked pretty hard.
  • I think a lot of people won't like it for multiple reasons. Whether its because they wont give it a chance or because it's unforgiving or because it's not like Arc where people are soft and "make friends". I'm sure that will happen but I doubt it will happen often.

My last match was pretty damn good. My teammate went down in a gunfight between us, another team, and UESC. Two of us survived and took out everybody that was left and got some pretty good loot out of everything. Teammate was super cool and called out some higher tier stuff that bodies had for me to pick up which I appreciated. We then got into another fight on the way to the extraction which took long enough that the fucking extraction point literally disappeared right as we were about to click on it... So with 3 minutes left we had to book it like 350 meters across the map to another extraction.

Teammate messaged me afterwards and added me to PSN which is cool. Reminded me of old school Halo or COD where you would just have a fun match and make friends that you would play with for years. I can't remember your name but if you are reading this right now dude thanks for the awesome match and I hope we play again.

Really trying to like this because i played so much of D1 and D2... i'm just not feeling it.

GHG hit a lot of my issues above pretty well... playing with randos is AWFUL.

I can get used to the movement though it does feel "off"

Game just doesn't feel fun to me so far.

Sorry but this is just nonsense. I turn all that shit off when I can. I play PoE2 and as a noob I can make my way around it no problem.

I learned Tarkov on my own and thats considered a very hardcore and unwelcoming game.

This games UI is just bad, its not intuitive, it doesnt even really make sense at first glance and you dont know wtf your looking at.

In my humble opinion ofcourse

Learning things is definitely absolutely not the problem that's for sure.. Give me difficult but also respect my time and give me a straight forward reason to play.

Like for instance with rpgs, or even an action rpg whatever one wants to consider crimson desert. Without going in I KNOW there's a story, there's loot, there's character building, there's stronger enemies and bosses I know these for a fact and haven't stepped foot in the game.

Marathon, ok so I go get loot and piss off out of there... Or I lose it. What exactly am I saving up loot for? What's the end game? So collect loot and just lose it in a never ending cycle? That's my issue with a game like this, learning shit isn't an issue

So this shit is also in this game... Will not even bother downloading it.

haven't played it long enough to say. I only did the tutorial on PS5, then tried it on PC, where all I got were server errors and crashes,
and now I am waiting till tomorrow when I can hopefully get 2 friends to try it with me.

The Triage Ult can one shot players as well as Rez teammates. Such a fun character

Also if anybody was playing shortly after 1 EST and got into a firefight and your teammate playing as Assassin just went invisible after one of you went down and just abandoned you and extracted. That was me... I had some pretty good loot and ya'll shot at another team and I just didn't feel like helping you guys lose that fight. I bitched out. Sorry not sorry.

Well shit, that's good to know.

I've tried it. It's not working for me. There are major issues here I would not expect from a developer like Bungie.

I have no idea what this is. I can only imagine it started as some small passion project and Bungie needed something to pitch to Sony and suddenly it had to be a big game or something.

It just doesn't feel right, everything looks visually inconsistent it's just like vomit on the screen.

It's methodical, ok. But it doesn't feel great. They haven't got it locked in to their usual standard

And my god. The UI and menus.

really gutted to be honest. I was kinda hoping for a turnaround story for this game but, it's rarely ever a reality, not even for a studio like bungie.

I don't see how they survive this.

It's almost like we hear this cope every time one of these games comes out and gets nearly universally panned. It's like you guys have to make up reasons for why everyone else is wrong and they don't understand or "get" it. Good luck with that, maybe this time it will work.

Bro I could go dig up literally any fucking shooter and find a retard clip like that lmao plus there's way to many cheaters that infested that game.

this is literally the game working as intended. this is the bullet magnetism. the game literally aims for you. no skill required.

it's called RRR... Red Reticle Range. and true Bungie fan should know that term. if you are in RRR, bullets bend towards your enemy.

they had to give Mouse players aim assist in PvP because otherwise they would not be able to keep up.
same reason they had to give mouse players aim assist in Marathon (not sure if the current version still has it because... it constantly crashes and disconnects for me) and why there was such a pushback during the alpha

Haha yea dawg when trials of Osiris was in its prime you didn't just waltz there, you had to coordinate and have plenty of skill.

And again nothing is perfect the game was fun sorry, nothing you will say will make me revert my enjoyment of destiny πŸ˜‚

I am a massive Halo 3 fanboy... doesn't mean I have to pretend like Halo's gunplay is good... because it's not. it's serviceable for a casual arena shooter.

Halo of course also has RRR, that's where it started after all. and Bungie basically hasn't changed their gunplay from Halo 2 to Destiny 2.

Bro I said it was fun, which is pretty much universally the opinion of bungie gun mechanics in the grand scheme of things

yeah, and in a PvE focussed game or one with RPG elements like Destiny, that's fine.
it's not fine in a genre they're now trying to enter, where the core fanbase of the genre are all hardcore FPS players that are mostly interested in skill based gunplay.

their gunplay isn't good. it is flashy and easy to master, which is why it's popular. it's the mainstream pop music of FPS gunplay.

it's a romp if you play Halo 3 with your buddies and shoot at zombie players in infection as you camp on top of the house on the custom map someone made.
but it's not appropriate for a more serious shooter that is targeting a more hardcore audience

It needs to be fun to learn, and I am not sure if this is.

I played two hours, and it feels like it's trying to be a hardcore game for hardcore groups of players. Not welcoming. This is not trying to be Destiny, Arc, Apex or any of those games. It's not as crazy as Tarkov, but it's gonna turn people off it.

I don't mind spending some time learning and getting used to games, but this feels weird. Not bad, but I have a hard time knowing what to think. It feels....... like it's put together by weird parts.

I need to play more, but my friends don't wanna play it no more.

Trials of Osiris was fucking sweaty as hell man, and people loved it. Not sure why you're fishing for tho at this point, bungie makes fun gunplay which I can acknowledge.

Ill ask again. What crossplay game does it right in your opinion?

Only got to play 1 match after the tutorial. Good first impressions, world feels immersive, already like it more than Arc, given Arc opened me up to the genre. I guess I like first person more than third person. Haven't experienced PVP so far. Quite looking forward to spending more time on this.

Not a genre for me but I've played 2 matches.

Graphics and art style are nice. Sound is good, I like the theme. Movement is okay but gunplay feels nice.

Found a team and smashed them, Found another team downed one but we'd no anmo or Meds and they did us.

I don't really know what to do in terms of contracts the menu etc but I'd learn quickly.

I hope it does well but I feel ever since concord it's received underserved hate with people hoping for another shit show like it. The mob are out for blood.

Some people believe if it's not made for them, it shouldn't be made.

Yeah like I said it's not for me because I can't be arsed looting but if I dropped in with loads of ammo I'd have fun just killing people. Even a PvP mode like destiny would be fun.

Makes me want them to make a destiny 3.

Embark are the only people killing Arc Raiders, it's like people claiming Battlefield 6 killed COD, Microsoft did that, Battlefield 6 killed itself, 40k players lol, Arc is heading the same way, you're not going to keep players, when they got used to Fortnite dropping meaningful updates weekly in it's prime, new weapons, new map POI's, Arc is boring.

And why is the loot in Marathon named by putting the name of it into google translate, shuffling into a thousand different languages and then translated back to english.

Roblox looking ass.

The art style is just contrarian for the sake of contrarian taken to a new length. It hurts the simple ability to make out what in the hell is going on in front of you. Breaking every rule of visual design isn't edgy, it just makes the most basic functions of the game annoying. The only passion exhibited here is passionately running off an aesthetic cliff at full speed. People are going to bounce off this at scale. It could have found an audience as a $20 Steam joint, but as a tentpole first party Prestige Release? Oh man. I wonder what the expected monthly overhead is just to run the thing.

I think you nailed it here but the audience is what it is.

I'm having more fun with it right now, but the on-boarding is just going to shed a lot of potential customers.

The UI is also not really as complicated as people are making it out to be but it does look crazy initially.

I'd be curious to hear from some Deadlock players as that seems to be the most complicated shooter out right now next to Marathon. How does that on-board better?

I feel like I'm one of the few people that actually doesn't hate the UI but I think a lot of it comes down to being a graphic designer.

I have my issues with it (I will always have disdain for the cursor based menu navigation that Bungie themselves helped make mainstream so that is a strike already) but from an art standpoint it's just outstanding. The use of color, and type faces is great and lends itself well to the world that they are building.

It's funny. I was watching Leahviathan earlier and she was streaming with somebody named and he said something along the lines of "I opened the game and I saw the serifed font and they get me" and I felt that because I saw the serifed type face and got excited because it just looked so fucking good.

Cheers, will try this.

At least its not BF6 options were you can change one thing and it inadvertently alters the time your mum comes round
I'm fucking dying. I've never heard that described better in my life. I swear every time I try to change anything in my BF6 settings it sets the entire thing on fucking fire.
