Looking through Water - 2/5 Movie about a Grandfather trying to relate to a rebellious teen through fishing and story telling.

I watched the Spanish movie Alatriste, starring Viggo Mortensen, who grew up speaking Spanish (I read that he has a Latino accent, instead of the Castilian accent he should have for the movie, but not being a Spanish speaker it doesn't bug me). Apparently this was the highest budget Spanish movie ever made at the time, and it didn't do very well.

I can see why, since some parts of it just aren't that good. Some parts of it are really fun, though, and it's a beautiful film to look at.

It's got a similar vibe to the Three Musketeers, except Spanish and at least in the English translation of the books, not nearly as well written.

oh right, sidenote, if you haven't read the Three Musketeers, but are thinking of doing it, don't read the newer translation that people online praise for some reason, it's trash. People's standards for this stuff, even book review journalists who should know better, are so low. Ease of reading should always be much less important than quality of prose, so check out Richard Pevear.

The music is good. Maybe I will check it out.

got around to watching The Phoenician Scheme.
Not really know what I watched, some parts felt like I watching a Naked Gun movie, some decent chuckles. It definitely kept me guessing wtf was going to happen in the next scene. The dialogue was quite unique. And camera definitely has a style to it. With the constant moving to the next destination, it seemed like a Harold & Kumar pilgrimage movie, only more high class and not as vulgar. I know the director has a reputation for his films.
Only other one I tried was the Hotel one which I kind of just watched casually, and honestly had no idea what went on in that one. Probably out of 10 people, 4 would hate it, 2 would like it, 3 would be ok. 1 would cheer and clap for an encore and consider this gold.

Looking his name up, I see he did Fantastic Mr.Fox, which is a title on my list that I heard people mention stuff about.

25th Hour: A

One of the Spike Lee's best films. This one was a good surprise since with Spike Lee, I tend to love or hate his movies

Monty (Edward Norton) plays a drug dealer who get's caught and is given 24 hours of freedom before having to go to prison

The supporting cast was equally as good as Edward Norton and all had interesting subplots

Philip Seymour Hoffman once again kills it in a role as a teacher who has inappropriate feelings towards one of his students, with that female student being played by Anna Paquin

Barry Pepper did a great job also as one of Monty close friends but unlike Monty is a Wall Street Stockbroker

Rosario Dawson did a good job playing Monty girlfriend in the movie

Brian Cox did a great job as the dad

My favorite parts in the movie

When Jacob (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is in class and letting Anna Paquin read out loud and you can see he's getting uncomfortable at her attire than them arguing after class about him giving her a B-

The nightclub scene where all the tensions that is throughout the film finally collide with Jacob kissing his student but realizing his mistake, etc. I really liked the use the double dolly shots he used during this scene. One where Mary is on the dance floor, anoher where after Jacob kisses Mary he panics and walks away. There was another one early on when Monty enters the nightclub. It's in everyone of his films so I have to call out the double dolly shot

The ending where as his dad is taking his son to prison, you can hear his voice over where he imagines another life for his son, where his son goes to another town where no one will be able to find him and he lives out his life, his girlfriend comes and meets him. They end up having a family together, and they show him getting older and his kids getting older. Than the last shot comes and you can see that's it's not real and it's the dad just wishing it went that way and just shows Monty's face in the car as his dad is driving him to the prison

I especially liked the segment earlier in the film where Monty is looking in the mirror and you can see his reflection just ranting about everyone in the city. It shows all those faces from different ethnic groups etc. Before the movie ends, I also liked how they showed the same faces but this time it was shown in a much more positive light. I think that rant in the mirror scene was more of him blaming his problems on other people but than when those same faces show up it was more of acceptance that he's going to jail because of what he did

I really loved the ending and the movie overall was fantastic

L.A. Confidential: A

Set in the 1950s in Los Angeles, three cops who are very different from each other having to deal with growing police corruption

Jack (Kevin Spacey) is a narcotics sergeant who is very cynical

Wendell (Russell Crowe) is a cop who is quick to anger and has a penchant for helping women who are in domestic abuse situations. Since he grew up with an abusive father

Edmund (Guy Pierce) is the good two shoes cop and is a constant foil to Wendell

Kim Basinger played a high end prostitute named Lynn

Danny Davito played a reporter

The movie had an ensemble cast and they all brought their A game to their roles. The writing was very smart and dense at the same time. Had some great twists and despite the movie being dense, I was able to follow the story clearly. Had some great cinematography. The setting look great down to the costumes. It was fun to watch and I wasn't bored at all throughout. I really liked how no one was really a good guy, even the three costars. They all had their flaws.

One of my favorite scenes is when Wendell confronts Lynn for sleeping with Edmund and in his anger he hits her a couple of times before he realizes his mistake and walks away. Unlike his dad, he realizes he went too far

The action itself was very well directed

Overall a fantastic movie and I can see why this movie is consider a classic since 1997

Return to Silent Hill - dogshit

Ms .45 (1981), directed by Abel Ferrara

6c15QvIl1ya1zHGK.jpg

A young woman living in NYC is raped, then decides to go on a revenge spree, becoming a serial killer targeting men throughout the city.

One of Tarantino's favorites.

From a filmmaking perspective it's a rough around the edges indie filmed on a small budget, but the subject matter does elevate it to interest, as you could argue it does for some of Abel Ferrara's other transgressive works like Bad Lieutenant. Our protagonist starts out by taking revenge on the wide variety of sleazoids trying to harm her, something that can be rooted for in the vein of Death Wish, but her motives quickly become warped beyond recognition as she spirals into darkness.

The lead actress, Zoe Lund, who was only 17 at the time of filming, reportedly became a heroin and coke addict, and public heroin evangelist, for the rest of her life. She died at 37 from drug abuse. Makes the film feel even more steeped in darkness, knowing that the Zoe's arc would follow the self-destructive path of her character's.

Abel Ferrara did a short interview in 2014 about Ms .45 and kept repeating that Zoe Lund was clean during filming, and that she only started doing drugs immediately afterward in Italy. He says it so many times within the span of a few minutes, circling back over and over to defend himself from a question no one asked, that it's hard not to assume he's 100% responsible for turning her into a druggie.

Man of Steel

Zack Snyder is definitely not my favorite directors, most of his films rank from OK to terrible. Man of Steel is an exception, and is genuinely a good film. Sure, it has some weird writing and the amount of destruction is ridiculous, but for the most part there's a lot to be liked. Some of the CGI has aged well, some of it has not. I'm glad Snyder held back his usual style, which looks extremely fake and videogamey. There's some of it here too, but thankfully not too much.

Cold Fish

A stagnant suburban marriage spirals into chaos after their daughter starts working for a charming old fish shop owner whose gruesome past refuses to stay buried

The film spends too much time orbiting around the father, yet never gives us real access to his inner world. He never truly acknowledges his feelings (either to himself or to someone he trusts) which makes his actions feel puzzling rather than tragic

That said, the direction is sophisticated, the score is used perfectly, and the editing is sharp. The transition from eerie to outright criminal feels natural and the build toward its cataclysmic climax is seamless

I do like the film overall but I take issue some of the story telling or at least how long we're asked to sit with it

The Zero Theorem: C

I really like the set design and how the dystopian world looked but the pacing was slow, the MC just came off as annoying, the story was pointless and the payoff was super lame. This whole movie just came off as super pretentious

Lots of better Sion Solo films. Why Don't You Play in Hell, Suicide Club, Love Exposure, Tokyo Tribe, depending on mood and tastes.

Anaconda (2025)
It was either this or Mercy, and my kids picked this.
Honestly, it was pretty funny. My kids genuinely enjoyed it, and I have no recollection of the original movie other than J-Lo, Ice Cube, and John Voight being in it - still had a good time.

I haven't seen any of those yet but I'll definitely add them to my list

I've been diving into East Asian cinema lately and can't seem to shake it lol. Thanks for giving me even more to check out 👍

Recently I've seen two Oscar nominees.
Marty Supreme and Bugonia.
Bugonia surprised me at the end. Unexpected plot twist for me.

Oh dude thanks for the reminder! I started Bugonia a while back and had to stop for some reason. I gotta finish it.

I saw Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die last week, and I thought it was great.

I'm a big fan of Gore Verbinski, he always makes the most fun movies with some unique action sequences. The Lone Ranger was a lot of fun but I do get why it bombed. That last action sequence was fantastic though. I reccomand A Cure For Wellness, that's a good horror movie and he directed it

I'm looking forward to watching that Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die movie

I guess I'm getting old as it took me two nights to finish this rewatch. It's one of my favorite movies ever and trades blows with Wolf of Wallstreet as my favorite Scorsese film. And the reason it doesn't blow Wolf out of the water is that after Tommy dies Goodfellas, something doesn't work for him in the final chapter of Henry's mafia career. The downfall and resolution certainly need to be told and I wish I could put my finger on why I don't adore it as much as the rest of the film, but it kind of makes the overall experience feel uneven which is not something I'd say about Wolf. I've also never loved the casting of Lorraine Bracco as Karen. Anyway, it's always fun to see a bunch of the Sopranos, another favorite of mine, cast in Goodfellas and speaking of Lorraine, I loved her in the role of Dr. Melfi (go figure).

Tokyo Taxi

my dad mentioned this movie to me the other day and I thought I would watch it while I have some time today. it's honestly pretty interesting. it's just a story about an old lady, and her taxi trip with a kind driver. it's one of those story about a life kinda movie and by all honesty it's nothing too special, but I really like it. it has heart to it and it feels... sincere, if that makes sense. and of course, it starts two big stars who were once pretty well known in their times does help since they have the chops to pull off a movie like this.

Prospect: A

The chemistry between Pedro Pascal and Sophie Thatcher was fantastic, they were two people stranded on a strange alien planet forced to work with each other until they eventually become friends by the end of the film. Beautiful looking film, the way they shot the alien plaent made it look super unique

I really liked how they established in beginning part of the film that Sophie Thatcher character works with her dad. She goes down to this alien planet with him to get this type of gem that can be found in the trees in that world. There's a certain process to getting the gems out without destroying them. It really added to the world building

The action was pretty good and had a uniqueness to it since the guns didn't go the usual pew pew lasers as I would expect from any other science fiction film

By the end they both survive and escape the planet

High Life: A+

One of Robert Pattison best performance. The plot is told in a non linear way that is easy to follow. The plot is slow too but it didn't bore me

This was a very uncomfortable watch throughout. The film is not shy about exploring certain sexual themes in full

The movie had some intensity to it too, where there were certain scenes that were rough to watch at times.

The movie ended on a more hopeful note despite him and his daughter going towards a black hole

Highly reccomanded

No Other Choice: The latest Korean film from Park Chan Wook(Oldboy). Stars Lee Byung-hun from Squid Game. It's a dark comedy where he loses his job and hatches up a scheme to try and murder the competition for the new job he wants to get because he's in a really bad financial situation. It's quite funny, there's also some brutal moments in it as well. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Borderlands

It's better than it's reputation. It almost felt a bit like Star Wars at times, though sillier (not funnier) and with more hectic energy, plotholes and lower stakes.

Sounds like my sort of thing, I'll give it a go and see if it's worth adding to my regular rotation of taxi movies.

Grizzly Night - 3/5 - I thought it was a horror movie, but it was about a night in the 70s when 2 grizzlies attacked guest in the national parks and the regulations that resulted in that. It was much better than I expected.

If I Had Legs I'd Kick You - Movie reminds me a lot of the movie Mother. The movie legit caused me anxiety and almost to hyperventilate. It's frantic, it just keeps ramping up and getting more intense, crazier, more frantic, more bizarre as Rose Byrne's character continues to get more and more unhinged. This one is going to take a lot to chew on. I never once didn't feel "I don't like this movie I want to turn it off" but at the same time I will never watch this movie again. It's a one time watch only for me. It's too out there and made me way too uncomfortable. Even the shots are always super tight, right on Rose Byrne's face in almost every scene. Almost every scene is dark. A lot of weird imagery.

This one is out there. It's an experience that's for sure. Rose Byrne was fucking amazing in it though. You feel her emotions in every scene even with just her facial expressions. I didn't see Hamnet so I didn't see Jessie Buckley's performance yet, but Rose Byrne's was the best actress performance I saw of 2025 movies. I'd be fine if she won best actress, she crushed it. And she heavily carries the movie, this movie is almost all her. Conan O'Brien is in it too, which is kinda random and he plays a decent sized role. He's probably in it second most in the movie of all the actors.

If you liked Mother! and like movies that make you feel uncomfortable, cause you anxiety, are intense and frantic, then this movie is for you. If you hate those you'll probably hate this. Ironically the movie Mother and this have the same exact IMDB rating.

Finally saw Hamnet at the cinema last weekend, and a woman sitting near me was in floods of tears during the bit that I'm fairly certain is going to win Jessie Buckley the Oscar.

I really enjoyed this too. It's so well done, but like you said, incredibly tense and even though I thought it was really well made it I can't imagine myself watching it again. Fantastic performance from Byrne too. If either her or Jesse Buckley wins the Best Actress Oscar it'll be well earned.

I also thought it was a really interesting choice to not show the face of her child for pretty much the entire film. That combined with the close ups on Byrne really keeps the focus on her anxiety.

It really allows you to see things through Rose Byrne's perspective and feel everything she's feeling. It also minimizes your attachment as a character toward her child, much of what Rose Byrne felt in the movie. I thought it was a great artistic choice.

I saw this advertised a bunch when I went to the movie theaters in Japan when I was there last year and I thought it looked good. I'll have to check this out when it hits streaming services.

I thought it was great. It's like the spiritual successor to A Serious Man.

Watched Rental Family with Brendan Fraser, it was lovely.

H is for Hawk -3/5 - Movie is about coping with loss and grief. It is pretty interesting, Overall I liked it. Losing a parent is a tough, tough thing.

Shelter

Jason Statham plays a retired special ops agent again. I wonder how long can he keep doing it. This time he has to protect a girl while trying to feel hitmen sent by his former boss from MI6. The film is as generic and predictable as it sounds. Some fun there, but I found myself checking my watch a couple of times.

No Other Choice - 7.5/10 entertaining
28 Years Later - The Bone Temple - 7.5/10 better than the previous one IMO
Marty Supreme - 6.5/10 - at times entertaining but Marty is a completely unlikable fellow and very anticlimactic ending
Bugonia - 7/10 - was a fun watch until the silly plot twist

A rewatch of Fallen (1998).
ur2oxEQCpEBOrRxB.jpg

A silly gimmick somewhat elevated by a young Denzel & John Goodman.
Bonus points for James Gandolfini playing a douchebag cop 😋

Pick my next 2025 movie for me. I'm just not in the mood for anything depressing. Nothing that will rip your heart out. Been dealing with an illness and want something either upbeat or something that makes you think. But nothing that is ultra somber or sad or depressing. 2025 movies I've yet to see, which of these fall in the category I'm looking for:

Fight or Flight
Die my Love
Rental Family
Sentimental Value
Nuremberg
Hamnet
Good Boy

I haven't seen Fight or Flight or Good Boy yet. But of those you've listed I'd say Rental Family best fits your criteria there.

A lot of classic actors died this year. Not big on celebrity worship but these are some great actors in here.

Gene Hackman
Robert Duval
Robert Redford
Kathrine Ohara

Dead Mans Wire - 3/5- Some crazy stuff happened in America in the 60s and 70s with individuals that you just didn't know about. Interesting movie about a hostage situation in Indy due to banks treatment of a guy.

GhostTown_2008_original_film_art_526c3693-94d2-4d29-b6cb-f5a274720b71_5000x.jpg

Ghost Town - Watchable garbage

71VGr7vZ-bL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_.jpg

Lethal Weapon - Far more terrible than I remember. It's remarkable that this came out a year before Die Hard.

Annihilation -3/5- This movie is OK and I do not know why people love it. It is just a decent film. I am not enamored with it.

Fight or Flight - it's a fun silly over the top beat em up movie that has good action, doesn't take itself seriously at all. It was enjoyable as a "kill time" movie. Not much more to say about it than that other than the ending is like kind of an abrupt ending which makes me feel like they have a sequel planned.

Top Bottom
