Marathon Releases March 5 '26 - $39.99

People would just load in and execute their team for loot.
Ya they would lol, people don't random queue in Tarkov for a reason. Still not a good argument for no friendly fire. In a game where death actually matters for something, why would you want to throw in a variable such as a random teammate? You have no idea what they are loading into that match for.

Friendly fire forces teams to communicate, slows down combat a bit. I'm not sure if any explosive type damage hurts friendlies or not, hopefully it does otherwise why not just lob nades and have your teammates rush the enemy as they are forced to fall back.

I don't think you're answer here addresses the point that the Marathon April alpha wasn't even close to the full, finished game.
Kind of does if you follow the thread.

This is what I originally asked in reply to the before/after shot of Overflow on that map:
Can't tell if this was unfinished or just terrible art direction. Because the reveal trailer was not this desaturated.

This is what the response was(sorry to keep pinging you lol)
Probably because it was in the alpha stage idk though

So I went digging and found out that the visuals from back in April was not due to the game still being in an alpha state, but an actual intentional art direction that they changed based on feedback. So - without the strong negative feedback - the game would have released in September with the visuals we saw in April.

The conversation about whether or not the game was in 'alpha stage' 5 months before release was a separate, but related, conversation.

Bungie literally wrote this just before releasing the alpha...

"HOW WE DEFINE CLOSED ALPHA

This is a true closed technical test of Marathon. What that means is that you'll be playing an incomplete version of the game. Our primary goal is to test two things: technical capabilities and our moment-to-moment gameplay loop. We plan to break stuff.

Alpha is a curated, limited slice of systems and content. We welcome feedback across the board, but the areas we are most keen to hear your thoughts on are:

  • Weapons and gunplay
  • Maps and survival gameplay
  • Runners, including kits and build-crafting
  • Early-game progression, including factions, contracts, and faction upgrades
  • PvP engagements against other Runners
  • PvE engagements against AI combatants
It's important to note the Alpha is NOT the complete game. It does not include:

  • Final visuals and graphics, including animations and lighting
  • Full and polished UI
  • All Runners
  • All zones, including the Marathon Ship
  • Pinnacle and end game content
  • All weapons, items, consumables, implants, cores, and mods
  • All factions and upgrades
  • Long term progression and systems
  • Complete narrative and storytelling systems and final shipping content
  • Ranked play
  • Final balance
  • We'll be hosting developer Q+As, streams, and jumping in with other creators all next week. See you on Tau Ceti IV."

I get what you are saying and in a perfect world it would be great to have it but I'd take open matchmaking over it any day if the week.

Found this on Reddit. I think it'll be a huge asset for playing without a crew of friends to play with.

Original thread on Reddit with details
I said it in the test. All this would be solved if you matchmade into a pre raid looby instead of straight into a match. Or at least have that option.

It was one of my biggest complaints. Interested to see uf they have made any adjustments, if not i won't be risking much when queuing with randoms

You're getting caught up on the wrong thing because you jumped on the conversation in the middle.

I was asking if the visuals in April was unfinished work or just the art direction at the time. That is literally what I asked.

Someone suggested it was probably because it was in an alpha state.

(This is where you're coming in)
I commented that - regardless of what Sony Bungie said - I don't believe that a game(especially a game like this) is in 'alpha state' 4-5 months out from release.

And then I went searching for an answer to my original question

(This is where we are now)
I found an interview that Joseph Cross(Marathon Art Director) did in April last year where he said the visuals in April(simplified/desaturated) was an intentional change from the high fidelity realism they were initially going for - and that they've since switched back to.

So even if it truly was in an 'alpha state' (besides the point now) the visuals in April was not because the game was in alpha.

That's it.

How many weapons are in the game? I've seen quite a lot in the few gameplay videos I've seen.
Key Weapon Details:
  • Total Count: Approximately 28 base weapons.
  • Variety: Ranging from heavy-hitting volt railguns (V00 ZEUS) to specialized rifles.
  • Ammo Types: Over 5 distinct ammo types ( Light, Heavy, MIPS, Volt Battery, Volt Cells).
  • Categories: Assault Rifles, Machine Guns, Precision Rifles, Pistols, Railguns, Shotguns, Sniper Rifles, and Submachine Guns.

What does the Heat mechanic do btw? Is that just stamina?

And can all runner kits slide or is that just the one who has it as part of an ability or whatever?

Yeah just stanima but the bar goes up instead of down.

If i recall correctly everyone can slide.

Like the others here have said, Heat is basically Stamina.
But today, I found out that environmental factors can affect that.

At 0:10 of this latest video from the Marathon YT account: "Heat builds up more slowly in rain and water"

I assume that the Cryo Archive will have some environmental effect of slowing down heat buildup, being the Cryo Archive.

I thought this game looked like shit, which I expressed here previously. Saw some gameplay this weekend, which turned out to be a good PR move from Bungie because it really caught my attention.

The gameplay looked really tight and I found myself really liking the dirty futuristic vine.

My only worry is if there are invisible "classes", I fucking hate that in shooters.

I need to stop engaging with the engagement baiters on X... so many calling for the downfall of this before even trying the free weekend. Again, if it turns out ot be actual dogshit then by all means but I am so tired of all these dorks proclaiming Marathon to be the next Concord... yet in the same breath they will whine about a lack of originality or new experiences in the industry while calling everything slop.

Just muting/blocking accounts on X now, stupid algorithm lol.

ChatGPT spit out some decent subtitles for the server slam thread. :lollipop_wink_tongue:

Yeah there's a class (shell) that has stealth but there's also a counter class that is able to mark enemies on screen, kinda like bloodhound from Apex legends.

I'm not sure how stealthy you get though, as in if you completely disappear or if players are still able to see you slightly if you move, etc.

Yeah, while I like the way they made the game look overall, now this game is clearly not for me as I hate stealth.

Yeah, save yourself from all that nonsense. As much as I enjoyed the information of Twitter/X, I just couldn't stand all the ragebaiting nonsense that runs rampant there with those chronically online users. Yeah, when I still had my account that was the best thing to do. It just got to the point where it started happening SO much that I just abandoned ship because it was just exhausting to see people just constantly bitching about everything and nothing, lol.

The unfortunate part is quite a bit of it has bled into GAF, but thankfully you can ignore all the same if you need to. I just try not to do that personally.

This week has definitely become an exciting one and I'm looking forward to a number of things. RE9 and Marathon at the same time has me so hyped, haha.

He must hate Metal gear solid!
I mean to be fair an invisible class in a multiplayer game is pretty annoying. It is in arena/hero shooters, let alone an Extraction one where you can lose valuable loot. I just hope it's not as OP and there's ways to detect them even without gadgets or abilities (perhaps have an in-universe explanation that the cloaking tech emits a low buzzing noise or whatever to at least have an auditory detection for when they are completely stationary).

Yeah fair enough. He could play the test to see if it's an issue. Isn't there a class that can see cloaked enemies? Recon I think.

I could've sworn I remember the devs saying the faster you move the more you are visible. Also it has the look of the stealth camo from MGS where you can still make out the character. So not 100% invisible, although I'm sure if you play it right and move slow you'll definitely catch people off guard.

Correct.

Moving fast makes you more visible. The best tactic is to blend the invisibility with the smoke ability.
There's also various abilities and tools that can counter Assassin shells. Like ping/scan devices, and Recon shell in general.

I mained assassin previous tests.

If you're in motion you are more visible. If you're still you are damn near fully invisible. If you shoot you leave invisibility. If you go into smoke you get invis back.

It can create some amazing outplay moments if people are dumb enough to try to fight you in smoked out areas. I'd throw a ton of nades into smoke areas if I know an assassin is there and recon isn't on my team.

I generally used mine to disengage not engage. If a fight is going south and I'm going to get rushed, then pop smoke invis and go reposition to heal up or just GTFO entirely.
