Marathon Releases March 5 '26 - $39.99

I don't even care if this is "my dad works at Bungie" fiction, I choose to believe it :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Haha, I don't blame you at all. Obviously I can't be like HERE'S SOME WILD PROOF!

I worked with him at a previous studio until we were laid off. Shortly after he ended up moving and working for Telltale. Which, unfortunately didn't last long. After being laid off he eventually ended up at Bungie. I felt so bad for the guy, he's great, and does great work. It was just a series of unfortunate events. I was worried that it'd happen again at Bungie too (as this is when layoffs were REALLY bad throughout the industry), but fortunately that was when things were going pretty well for Destiny 2 and he was good. I hadn't heard from him for a bit, so I was worried he wasn't there anymore and was looking for work. But fortunately he's still there, and things are sounding good!

This should be a standard question going forward to the drive by's.

Or what are the last 3 games you played?
For real! I mean, obviously everyone has their own opinion and preferences. But how can you not be curious? Haha. If THIS is ass, what ISN'T ass to you?

What's this have to do with how this game looks? Granted I've not played it, I will soon though but I'm not liking it's visual make-up.

The unedited footage I posted doesn't look good to me and I'm surprised anyone could argue otherwise but I'm going to leave the conversation until I play it.

More aimed at the DOA and Concord comments we get daily.

The art style is entirely subjective of course some love it others hate it.

There's a lot going on in that video that might look like chaos and a mess to someone not familiar with the game, understandable.

Report back when you get your hands on it. Eager to hear more thoughts from people when they've played it. If you like PVP i think you might be pleasantly surprised, I was. If you don't would still like to hear some thoughts as to why not.

It certainly will have some faults worth discussing.

What are your favourite MP games of the last few years btw out of curiosity?

The art style shouldn't even be controversial anymore. In the first playtest - sure. But now? It's just a sci-fi aesthetic without the desaturation filter they originally had on it.

It looks like the Clovis Bray facilities in Destiny except with more colour.

I think they had to go for something like this otherwise it would look too much like Destiny or Halo.

I love it personally, yes it looked like shit in parts during the alpha but its really come together now.

What did people want? Generic looking shooter no 10045? Actually I already know the answer, they just don't like MP games so anything they did would have pulled negative sentiment

I think "just a sci-fi aesthetic" is a little reductive - it still looks like nothing else out there IMO and everything from the runner models to the faction branding and AIs feels fresh and unique to me. You can tell there's inspiration coming from designers republic and wipeout etc. but that's just the starting point. Mirror's Edge and Catalyst are another obvious comparison but again, there's plenty to distinguish Marathon from those games. It's much more than the sum of its inspirations.

Of course the look still won't appeal to everyone but I'm still a little surprised when I see people outright trashing it. Ever since the first reveal I've seen countless comments from people who aren't interested in the game but love the visual style. We've seen a lot of games take a cartoony fortnite look and we're also in an era where a lot of other games are going for that UE5 color graded photorealism but all blending together thanks to their reliance on stock tech and post-processing. I think some gamers want to return to the piss filter era for some reason. Sometimes I feel like we already have based on how a lot of UE5 (and other) games are handling their color grading etc.

Oh don't get me wrong. I love the art direction! And yes, my comment may have been a tad reductive, but I was trying to get to a common denominator with someone who may still have issues with it.

It'll be interesting to see how this one pans out. The maps look pretty small, have to wonder if there's enough meat to keep people satiated.

Arc Raiders got very stale very quickly for me. I guess this is more PvP focused though so there's that.

Arc Raiders maps are definitely larger. But these ones - while smaller - don't ever feel claustrophobic, or that there's not enough space to maneuver around things.

The size makes PvP more enjoyable, and with the retuned AI enemies, it makes the battles feel more like a PvP match.

Definitely smaller than the big ARC maps, but there's a lot of density in the points of interest. It's gonna take me a long time to learn the building layouts. Outpost especially looks crazy for this. Plus there's a lot to do in the larger buildings. Finding keycards, accessing locked-off areas, coordinating team for some light puzzle-like elements etc. I think there's gonna be a lot to sink your teeth into with the launch maps, let along the season 1 endgame raid. Especially with how the faction missions will task us with all kinds of crap to complete in a single raid. Although the most hardcore players will have it all figured out quickly I'm sure, that's just the way it goes.

Yeah, I feel like with all the changes they've made to the game, they've definitely leaned into PVP even more so than before. So, it seems like there's a lot more potential for interactions and chaos.

Yeah, same. Arc Raiders is a great game, and I'm glad it's been successful. But I was never really into the whole aesthetic it was going for. I played it for a few days, and it just didn't click with me.

The maps are smaller but much more dense and more like PVP arenas with space inbetween. They have a clear progression to them as well. You want the best gear you have to go to Outpost and expect to fight for it.

This game seems to have all the answers to the problems I have with Arc Raiders. If it delivers it will be huge.

Man the slop brained hivemind is downloading twitter opinions left and right and I am starting to think I backed the wrong horse. 😩

Really hope I can at least get two to three months of solid sessions out of this.

I feel like there's a big vocal minority who are shaping a Concordian narrative around Marathon. It's so short sighted and annoying lol.

It is 100% the vocal minority. The general public do not give a single shit about stolen art or the April beta test. I am absolutely confident we will have enough content to satiate our varying attention spans. I've played the tests and I'm in for the long haul, people just have to be miserable and can't stand seeing others hyped for something.

It becomes their mission to shit all over everything, like neanderthals.

Trust me mate. This game is fire.

If it has the legs or not is a different story but you'll get £40 worth either way.

If you don't like it i will personally refund you the 40.

I'm sure you will.

There are people that want this to be the next Concord so bad, just like they wanted Highguard to be. Highguard has officially failed, so now they're looking for their next target, Marathon. A good game is a good game, and a bad game is a bad game. But I will say there are a number of content creators that aren't helping the situation by stirring the pot in front of their fanbase that's made up of thousands of yes men and women.

The dogpile obsession is bizarre to me. People say "DEI" this and "woke" that, but clearly that's not the case anymore. It's just a, "I don't like it because _______, and I want it to fail" mindset, lol.

Almost 2500 post discussing a game that is not out. This game at least as generated a conversation.
2000 of those are from 6 or 7 of us who have played the game or who are interested in it

Bungie have been dropping shorts and content daily, lots to discuss.

Honestly I'm not skilled enough for PvP either, but succeeding in that 1 raid after failing 5 or so just gives a real kick.

It's kind of similar to me playing FromSoft games. Trying to beat a boss for 3 hours straight.

You kinda have to find the fun in failing a bit. Else it gets frustrating real fast.

I hope it is something that you enjoy.

Personally the art is bad to me. I don't like the neon look, but Bungie knows how to make good shooting. I am also not interested in Online shooters either.

Yeah, it's a mixed bag for me. Sometimes I do better than others, but it all depends on the game.

I think that's a great comparison!

Agreed. I think that is what makes some extraction shooters better than others. You HAVE to make it entertaining and fun even if you lose. That loop is really important. For the longest I didn't care for extraction shooters because I didn't quite understand or see the "end game" aspect of it. The idea of getting great loot and then potentially losing it just did nothing for me. Dark & Darker was the first one that spoke to me, and spoke to me hard. Hunt had some really cool things about it too, people are just way too sweaty on it as it's been around for SO long.

The genre is still so young and there aren't enough new ideas in it, so, it'll be interesting to see how it evolves.

MP maps in games are part of the sauce. A chess board is not, its competely different.

Would Formula 1 be as interesting if they raced on the same track every week in the same conditions?
I disagree completely about Chess. A map is just boundaries and a rule set where players can interact via mechanics. A chess board and its 8x8 black and white squares is designed specifically that way to the benefit of the player experience. Would chess be better on a 6x12 board?

My position isn't that all games should have only 1 - 4 maps (or tracks in your F1 example). My point is to get people to think about why some games have nearly infinite repeatability on a limited number of maps and others benefit with more.

I think Bungie has had plenty of time to make a 5th map for Marathons March 5th launch and they opted not to because they didn't see it as a primary issue.

In one of the vidocs a Bungie dev said "Marathon is poker with guns". Guys play poker in the same garage, on the same table, every month for years because poker doesn't benefit from new maps.

🤔... I have never engaged in multiplayer games, maybe I could be a gigachad. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Case closed.

I really don't. You post YT videos on here to try and validate your opinion that this game is trash.

I don't like golf but you don't see me on the 18th hole telling everyone its trash and please agree with me.

Seems to me like you are unable to form opinions of your own. You probably never played Exp 33 but voted it game of the year to feel accepted.

Bet you were bullied as child for having one bollock or ginger hair.

I feel like if I went into a fighting game thread (a genre I don't enjoy and don't play) and started talking shit left and right I'd get in trouble pretty quick.

Us six or seven Marathon fans are truly oppressed.

It won't. You don't play these sort of games so your opinion is ill informed and irrelevant.

You'll play one match of the test and label it trash.
First: Imagine having better insight without playing a game than from one who has?. 😬

Second: this thread is about the price and release date, the news between now and then are part of the marketing campaign and subsequent reaction online (PR)

Third: just as there are actual "Haters" there are the "Glazer", both are pathetic and deserve ridicule

Theres a difference. The haters have not played it and likely never will. The "glazer's" as you put it have enjoyed what they played but recognise its shortcomings and are eager to see if it sticks the landing.

Why are you so invested in seeing this game fail?

laughable.
Yeap. Having a better take and assessment of something just by a quick glance compared to the ones that are balls deep in something is quite funny.
This thread is about the game.

That's where the OT for games are for, right? Where your 6 or 7 people can galze each other with the game they are currently playing and enjoying

Why are you so invested in seeing this game fail?
I already said it. Is not the game itself, is Bungie's wokeness 🤷🏻‍♂️

You think the people who don't like the game have no opinions of their own?
How do you know that you don't like the game if you've never played it?

Unless you have no interest in the genre of course, in which case then yes their opinion is irrelevant.
