HU - Is Chinese DDR5 the solution for the current market?

Hardware Unboxed reviews a kit of DDR5 from a company named CXMT, that only costs 138$. Though in the last 2 weeks, prices have rising to be just 50$ under other companies memory prices.

TLDR: for the most games, the KingBank DDR5 kit loses 1-2% performance, compared to a GSkill kit. Despite the KingBank being CL36 and the GSkill kit being CL26.

What's stopping big techs from gobbling those up for datacenters?

Well SSD already is, KingSpec or Nextorage cheaper and reliable.

I really hope for competitive GPUs from China too...

I honestly think America is in decline and the world is trying to shift us to china.

All I keep hearing about in the last few weeks is loads of Chinese stuff becoming available.

Sorry if it sounds crazy it's just all over the news.

Chinese cars are taking over
Chinese ram is now an option

It's probably nothing but feels like there's a shift.

Big tech being American and these companies almost immediately being shitlisted by the US government for spying or whatever the fuck reason they pull out of their asses the moment this goes mainstream.

Nothing at all. The price of CXMT memory has already gone up.
Our only hope is that this company can build up factories fast enough and flood the market.

People are poorer and chinese stuff is cheaper. It's as simple as that.

Plus, rest of the western world try to distance itself from USA after all the shit Trump said and done.

For a long time America reliably convinced the rest of the world to freeze China out because they(US) could provide everyone else with the things that they would be looking to China for.

But since America is currently....being America...everyone else is now seeing that it's not worth it to roll the dice every 4 years and hope for the best.

So you're seeing countries looking for other trade partners, opening up to China, India, etc because the US is not a reliable trade partner at the moment, Europe looking inward for a lot of things they relied on the US for.

You're not crazy. It's not nothing, and it is a shift.

Yes, let me just install Chinese RAM in my computer...

Let's pretend that 90% of the products you buy already isn't produced in China. Is being worried about China an American thing? Chinese EV's is flourishing in Europe.

On-topic;

I would of course buy Chinese RAM if it's cheaper and available. Big question is if they can mass produce this, and if they can, why not sell them to AI data centers?

Let's hope they bring down the prices. I need to build my pc next year or I will get Microsoft steambox.

Didn't china previously imposed trade restrictions with some countries due to investigations on covid or recognizing taiwan as a country? People complain about trump weaponizing america's economical power but china has been doing that as a national policy for decades.

Isn't a little sad that we are not an option for a shift? Maybe we spend too much time in GAF to make stuff for the world :lollipop_content:

They are doing it right now with rare metals which due to their subsidies they got a near monopoly in. And every time someone wants to produce it, China can drop prices far enough to kill off competition since it's all CCP government controlled. Which is why the recent US led agreement to put a price floor for these products is important.

As to the Chinese RAM, it's mostly going to go to internal demand within China which is just as hot as in the West. Also, the major Chinese players don't have the tooling to quickly expand.

That said, Dell and HP are talking to CXMT (I think that's the lead vendor) for consumer mainly laptop) RAM.

Yes Chinese RAM chips are going to spy on you, steal your bitcoin, fuck your wife and cancel your dog on social media.

Are people this stupid for real or is it all an act for the internet?

Social bigoted ultra-nationalism for appearances?

No of course China is much better, you should try to see past your prejudices you would see it too.
I don't think the chinese government colluding with national hospitals to harvest and sell human organs from patients, suiciding the whistleblower, disappearing the evidence, silencing social media with their censor powers when the populace got wind of this, then disappearing the people who protested is prejudice.

You're absolutely right, and there is a shit ton of things you can hang on China if you want to complain about the country, but being afraid of Chinese made DDR5 ram is either 100% stupidity or 100% xenophobic, take your pick.

Of all computing components, RAM is what I would suspect the least of finding a way to spy on you, especially with no way to detect it. It's all the other pieces that already spy on you that you gotta worry about!

I agree. If it was the CPU, SoC, the router, or the GPU, I can see it sending all the data back to China.
But DRAM chips are very unlikely.

I know it's dumb in this case, but i can't blame people for being overly cautious given the type of country it is. I'm sure many of our europeans friends here would be throwing a fit if this were russian made for example

Well im not falun gong so i don't really care about falun gong propaganda. Im not chinese so i don't care about ccp propaganda either.
Im a librarian and i care about forming sentences that make sense tho, and so should you.

Let's take a look at the human rights record of the US shall we?

Paying special attention to extra-judicial activities…

See?

Whataboutism is FUN!

If the quality is good there is nothing wrong with this. Competition is good. I hope they can deliver epic RAM performance soon. Have you seen the Chinese cars for example? So much value for the money.

Hey, i'm not saying you can't dislike the US or it's government or trump's geopolitics. But thinking china is somehow better for even a single moment is pretty hilarious.

I don't want to get into politics, but holy shit, China is less than 100 years to conquer the world

There is no moral superiority in statecraft.

The US tried to delude the world that they held it for decades but Trump finally lifted the curtain and put the honesty of corrupt, cronyist and capitalist (dressed up as nationalist) self-interests on display for all the world to see.

Nobody is saying China is "better", simply that it's moronic (or simply plain xenophobic) to criticise everything that comes out of a country of 2.2B people because you're drunk on "China shit stink" kool-aid fed by US social media for years.

I don't think it's about being better or worse, both countries have done some repugnant things as have others. The west outsourced to China for cheap labour decades ago, so not buying Chinese RAM is odd and not buying Chinese made products virtually impossible.

Hey, the asian market has a special term for constructions made by chinese companies - including chinese themselves as that's where the term originated: "Tofu buildings", i'll leave it up to you to ponder why that is.

I don't really trust Chinese products. Sure they perform as well as western brands, but they break way too often - quality control is non-existent.

I've bought a chinese tablet recently and it just decided to stop working

Yes you too will be denied your piece of meat at the grocery store when your carbon footprint exceeds your limit according to your credit score. And if you don't eat meat, it'll be something else you love.

Can't believe how no one sees the big picture... And if you don't care well natural selection will take care of you at some point 🤷‍♂️

By the way I'm not from the US, it's worse, I'm from Chinada..up north...next to most of you.
