Digital Foundry: Romeo Is A Dead Man - DF Review - PS5/PS5 Pro/Xbox Series X|S/PC

The thing is, this isn't just seen in UE5 games; there are similar or even greater differences favoring the XSX in other third-party graphics engines in these last two years.

In last two years? Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 PS5 version obliterates XSX in performance. And that game is huge. So, what is the problem?

This wouldn't run right at all when I tried it in Steam Deck. It kept the screen black and the subtitles were further ahead than the audio. I had to quit the game and just play it on PC.

Maybe the combo niche Game+Japanese Studio+ XSX version performing as it does against a PS5/Pro..... It's hard to explain and accept for those who didn't foresee this

But hey! You're a tiresome Xbox fanboy if you point this out... even though the same people who are telling you this two years ago were also arguing that such a situation wasn't possible and that the opposite would be the norm. 🤷.
what games are these on series x that give you a much better experience? seems pretty rare for the most part.

There are games which hold better 60 fps on series X but try to sell it as fundamental for a better experience... most of such differences are pure academic, interesting for sure, but not that outstanding I dare to say.

If you think the differences in KCD2 between XSX vs PS5 warrant the term "PS5 obliberates XSX," then "XSX is a beast" should also be entirely accurate for you, given that the differences in a significant number of games in recent years favoring XSX over PS5 are greater, more frequent, seen in games with different graphics engines, and at a time in the generation when (as many here have said and argued) XSX is last in line when it comes to dedicating optimization time to it.

Going back to the 360 era no doubt.

If only we were that lucky.

The games were better back then, too.

XSX uses a multiplatform engine not a dedicated one so what you say here hasn't much sense at all. What further dedication in development should requires exactly? This game would should run shitty or not that good if series X was really the last line in optimization as you said.

Actually it isn't in last few years. It was actually since last year. :/ So, toolz for Xbox are fixed finally, huh?

If. IF? Same was said that AMD Fidelity FX features won't be on PS5 because one and only and almighty XSX is "FULL" RDNA 2. And then.... Resident Evil Village showed AMD Fidelity FX features on..... PS5. :/

The fuck are you talking about? Village uses Fidelity FX features that even the PS4 version of the game uses .. it doesn't do anything only RDNA 2 could/was ever supposed to do in the first place.

If only we were that lucky.

Citing the first Rage as an example of 'games being better' back then.

For RDNA 2. It does. Are you senile what was talked about it? You don't know what came out after this tweet?

That tweet is dated after RE Village had already come out.

Make some sense, please.

edit: Let me end this tangent for you right now:

RE Village uses FSR1.0 on PC, on console it uses Capcom's own checker-board rendering someitmes dubbed 'interlaced rendering', it uses some other Fidelity FX features like CAS, SPD, CACAO, which are all supported on the PS4 version as well. No one ever said Village will have any kind of visual features that only RDNA 2 would support, you don't know what you're talking about, James.

The thing is people like you at the start of the generation haven't exactly such expectations for series X but let sell it as an incredible achievement and all the bullshit around downplay the ps5 specs are never happened.
The thing is people like you makes up lies about what I said when he has nothing to argue.

It's as simple as looking at the history and threads from that time, and you'll see someone being cautious about what was being said regarding the specs and supposed performance of both consoles... In fact, I were more like someone suggesting others be just as cautious when they saw a future on the horizon where the Xbox Series X wouldn't receive any games, much less show the performance it currently delivers.

As for the rest, I'll just say that this thread is the same as the last 20... The déjà vu of seeing you as the user with the most posts, all of them whining against anyone who dares to positively assess the XSX performance 🤷🙇

Actually it isn't in last few years. It was actually since last year. :/ So, toolz for Xbox are fixed finally, huh?

You mean that the whole "things will change with the improvement of the tools" thing actually made sense??? Wow, I thought it was just the most absurd and laughable thing on NeoGAF 🤷

A year and a bit, a year and a half, two years... whatever you prefer. The key is to assess how the XSX versions of multiplatform games have turned out when a majority here anticipated a very different picture than the current one. Among other things, because, surely, the XSX is the last thing on the list of priorities for studios when it comes to optimization time.....

PS.Note that for some, two consecutive Digital Foundry comparisons won by the PS5 by a 3 fps difference could already be considered a trend...🤷

I've said that RE8 showed PS5 version use Fidelity FX RDNA2 features ( that was the first game that used it)

You forgot about Resident Evil Village demo which came out a month and a half before full release? And also, it started before that. Official AMDs annoucement.

OMG, Xbox exclusive. :/

??????

What RDNA 2 specific feature did RE Village or its demo use that was supposedly never going to be on the PS5 ? You need to clarify the dumb stuff you're saying.

If you're going to say RT, PS5 had multiple RT games before Village came out so that was clearly not it, what else could you even be talking about ?????

OMG, Xbox exclusive. :/

?????

Where does it say FSR2 will be Xbox exclusive ? The article says it's coming to xbox, even fucking switch 1 supports FSR2.

These new breed of fanboys are the worst.

Key is... There were NUMEROUS excuses since start of the gen how games on XSX performs worse because of the toolz. Xbox and Xbox fandom were rightfully mocked lwft and right for yelling about one and only 4k/60full RT full RDNA 2 all mighty XSX and how XSS will push PS5 pretty hard.

PS.Note that for some, two consecutive Digital Foundry comparisons won by the PS5 by a 3 fps difference could already be considered a trend...🤷

Yeah. Like XSX had 1 fps advantage in games, and called it a win, right? Totally deserved. It is after all a full RDNA 2 only console

Can we be honest and just state the obvious—Unreal separates the chaff from the wheat when it comes to developers. It's a powerful tool in the hands of capable devs, and a total nightmare when leveraged by mediocre ones?

LOL. You are a senile one?You really don't know what was said on social media about that?

Minus the muddy 540p and 640p relying on trash display scalers.

I think Lokaum D+ Lokaum D+ is having some serious rose tinted deja-vu.

Rage 1 is, sure, one of the rare games that runs a steady 60 but then again so have all future ID (and ID Tech) games afterward. That's not to say that Rage was running damn near PAL SDTV resolutions without any intelligent up-scalers to smooth shit over.

And we're talking about the PS3/360 gen as a whole, a gen notorious for a massive majority of the games on it not even being able to run a locked 30 all the time.

Rage is the exception, not the rule by FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR !!!

still better than today the we have to rely on the awful upscaler that is FSR 2.0 or lower for most games and the display scaler that in some TVs are shit.
Nah. I will take FRS4 or DLSS over that vaseline mud any day. Even methods Insomniac and Guerilla employs.

A final Xbox blow to the PS5, really?

There are numerous tweets like this. I've said that, yes

Bruh just no. For one most games are cross gen this gen. So we got a ton of 1440p/60fps games. Then if you want a 30fps experience 360/ps3 hardy ever had stable 30fps and 720p with no upscaler looks worse. Ps3 was sub hd in many 3rd party games and they ran games at mostly 25-30fps.

consoles dont have access to FSR4 or DLSS ( nintedo has some kind of DLSS ), but yeah, tech is better but i would never imagine that we would be stuck at 720p 20 years later of its implementation.

Nanite and RT lighting isn't cheap or free. It's either that or either have a game spend year(s) baking light maps or look like a game borderline one to two gens behind (see a common nioh 3 criticism in that game's DF topic).

One of the craziest things this gen is how much we were hyping up UE5 and all the hyperbole around it. How certain devices couldn't run it like a PS5 could.

Ultimately, it ended up being a piece of shit. Lol

Btw

Sony didn't bragged about it, so, it won't be on PS5 because it is not full RDNA 2 ( month later it showed it RE8. Like i've said. You are a senile person.

For reference, Alan Wake 2 was October 2023 and since you can see a trend change.

You say they were ridiculed precisely when the current situation could have perfectly vindicated them?

We don't know if it was the improved tools, we don't know if it's because it's more RDNA 2 than PS5... What is certain is that the current results on XSX aren't due to it being the primary game development platform and the one that studios dedicate more attention to, prioritize, or spend more optimization time on. Therefore, the options for explaining it are limited.

Then... It's curious that for you, those who said "it's the tools" were worthy of public criticism, yet you don't see those who predicted a very different current situation for Xbox Series X vs. PS5 in multiplatform games as equally worthy of public criticism. 🙇

Because is it only the tiresome and naive Xbots who give victory to a platform by "differences of 1fps"?

Then, we're talking about games with up to 15+ fps differences (also in different graphics engines). Or games where that difference is a drawback. For example, games with a 5-6 fps difference that means going outside the VRR range, for instance, or below 40 fps (120Hz mode)... or games where the resolution difference is obvious.
Like it or not, these types of cases and situations have occurred more in favor of XSX than in favor of PS5 where they have not been replicated... even more so in recent times.

Finally, I don't know who celebrates a 1-2-3 fps difference in favor of one game as a victory if/when it does affect 0 the overall experience. It certainly won't be me.

Software is once again outpacing hardware. With that said, UE5 is very heavy. Heavier in some hands than others. however.

Unbelievable. Dude, Xbox officially said toolz were the problem. Xbox and Xbox fandom were rightfully mocked for that. And yes, you, i and all on internet are very well aware of marching orders from Xbox higher ups how XSX Tower Of Power with its 12TF will obliterate PS5 in every game comparison before this gen started. That never happened till this day. Those were rightfully mocked too. Period.

OMG, Xbox exclusive. :/

What the fuck are you talking about? FidelityFX stuff run on every DX11 class GPU.

Those tweets say nothing about RDNA2. MS just implemented this stuff in Xbox GDK.

no upscaler ai, native resolutions and good optimization

we had it good and didnt even knew

I completed RAGE on PS3 and it looked like shit with constant texture pop in. But yeah, 60fps on 7th gen consoles (when stable 30fps was rarity) was a great achievement.

It is not about DX11 GPUs, it is about XSX and PS5.

It was about implementation of those techniques into development software for Xbox, that's it.

There are dozens of games using FFX stuff on PS5 (like FSR), even some of it was used in PS4/X1 gen.

He's arguing that because AMD and Jason tweeted about FSR2 being integrated into the GDK for series and Xbox One, it means they were saying it's Xbox exclusive and PS5 wouldn't be able to do it.

Don't waste your time Bojji. His posts and general demeanor scream an icon-era alt.

1440p > 1800p is a *much* bigger difference than 720p > 1080p is.

We're talking over a million pixels in difference.

Not even including the fact that that "720p" is dynamically adjusting to 1080p as well.
Really? You are going to argue the perceptual difference of 1440p - 1800p INTERNAL raised to 4K is more impactful than 720P to 1080p? You really don't understand upscalers do you? They fall apart without sufficient input and when you drop below 1080p you are into that zone. The pixel multiplier is 9x, 4x, 2.25x and finally for 1800p 1.44x. So the difference between the X (or PS5 base) being in the 9x - 4x zone vs being in the 4x - 2.25 zone (not sure what the Pro internal res actually is so lets just say 4x) is actually a big difference in IQ. Also as pointed out you cherry picked a single moment on the Pro for the comparison, when 60fps is the norm.

You wonder why people get annoyed? Its because you post with an agenda or post without knowing what you are talking about. Take your pick.

First, check the results again in some of those games... Some are debatable which is better, and others fall into that range you mentioned where "who celebrates victories by a 1-frame difference"? But hey! Only stupid, tiresome Xbots fans would complain. 😉

Now review games where the PS5 wins by up to 15+ fps, starting with AW2 2023 --->.

It is OK. Finally toolz are fixed for Xbox. Xbox will see huge sales spike after this comparison.
And that reaction perfectly describes you.

And here we go again.... Let's generalize and say that it's always the tiresome and naive Xbots fans who deserve to be ridiculed. PS fans, always consistent and nothing to criticize them for regarding what they said... and yet, in the end of all, here we are well into the sixth year of the generation, in a scenario that those same people said would never happen, a trend favoring the XSX in multiplatform game results, in a thread about a niche game from a Japanese studio with an XSeries version and the XSX performing up to 18fps better than the PS5.... But hey! nothing to see here!🤷

These are not 'moments', these are entire stretches, probably lasting the entire mall / underground encounter area that DF mentioned. They both show and talk about it in the video.

You are not being held a hostage in the thread, if you don't like what's being said or shown in the video, you're welcome to disengage.

Genuine question: Does any normal/casual gamer person care about this stuff?

The difference in clarity is probably harder to notice, especially in combat, but you're sure as shit gonna notice drops to 40's.

Even if VRR is a net benefit, games dropping out of VRR range makes the drops even worse cause you can really feel the non-VRR judder after being in that golden window for a while, it's very darn noticeable.

I'm sure every VRR display owning console player will agree.

Many ue5 games run better on Xbox in the last 2 years on something. Yet in the other thread you can read that power advantage never showed up in games.
You were the one saying that studios ( including MS first party) and UE5 didn't take advantage of XSS/X features due to PS5 install base. So which is it now? This proves you wrong when a small studio releases a japanese UE5 game like this.
The people were telling you the impact of it wasn't that big in most games especially bigger more influential ones like fortnite. They were the ones who were correct not you.

UE5 actually doesn't use those features, engine itself was heavily advertised for PS5 in first demos.

But it looks like it likes high memory bandwidth a lot of compute power, that may be the reason why Xbox outperforms PS5 in many games, nothing to do with RDNA2.

it's basically like maybe 2-3 games this gen where the difference is this big, so calm down.
