Star Trek: The Motion Picture

I'm not too into Star Trek. I've only seen some TNG episodes and pretty much nothing from the original series. However, I did enjoy this Star Trek TV show DLC 1: The 4k Remaster. The beginning felt like I was inviting old friends over even though I don't know any of these people. You can tell they got some aging hippies to work on this movie because it really leans into the psychedelic visuals. Pleasantly surprised by that. Also, I don't know how they convinced Anya Taylor Joy to shave her head. Well done.

White House Down

Terrorists take over White House, with relative ease, may I add. This film is truly non-stop action. The shooting and explosions never stop. It's fun and even exciting for a while, but when they never stop once they get going, in becomes a bit stale after a while.

Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid: B+

The chemistry between Butch and Sundance Kid was a lot of fun. I really liked the shootouts especially the last shot at the end. The female love interest was really good too. Had some beautiful cinematrography. Highly reccomanded
 
Dust Bunny- 2/5- I don't even know what this movie is supposed to be doing. It isn't good at all. Maybe some mildly funny bits, but a waste of the cast.
 
The Ugly Stepsister (2025).

Think The Substance meets Cinderella set in the 19th century.

First of all she wasn't ugly at all. She had braces at the beginning so what. Cute as a button.

Her family facing financial troubles her mother sets her up with a quack like Dr. Nick from the Simpsons to transform her into an undeniable beauty so she can marry the local Prince.

There's some body horror and one scene with eye surgery I had trouble with because it was so icky 😆

The main actress does a great job and I enjoyed her performance and the setting.
 
Diabolik 2021

The film feels very italian and reminds one of horror classics by Bava or Argento.. but without the horror (except if you are a feminist, then you will be horrified that this was made in 2021 and spawned two sequels.)
Diabolik is the italian version of Arsène Lupin, a thief, but different from Lupin he is not at all likeable.

If you have a high b-movie tolerance and want something that feels very different from modern Hollywood, this might be something worth a look.
 
Finished a trilogy of Japanese horror movies last night

犬鳴村 (Howling Village), 2019
樹海村 (Suicide Forest Village), 2021
牛首村 (Ox-head Village), 2022

This is a trilogy of films from director Takashi Shimizu (famous for the first two The Grudge films), though the three are only very loosely related to one another with subtle callbacks.



Every movie was deeply flawed in its own way, but they all had decent jump scares and creepy atmosphere. They all do whip-pan scares incredibly well, that thing that was popular in horror 15 years ago where the camera pans past something that's out of place then naturally cuts back, and it's not there.

Fun horror flicks, but they all get a little bit batshit insane towards the end of each one.

It's not a terrible film, but feels like a big part of the character development was cut out of the middle of the film. The "reveal" is overly heavily signposted repeatedly during the film.

It's a weird edit.

Triangle of Sadness did it better, imo.

It was my first time watching it since I usually avoid horror, but being a classic, it's always been something I've been really curious about

Great acting, sets and music. I especially loved the constant howling of the wind outside, they really nailed the atmosphere. The practical effects were both horrifying and awesome and I definitely wasn't ready for the dog scene, it really shocked me

And the constant uncertainty about who's who is masterfully done in this film. Every interaction is tense. That paranoia creeps into every scene, making even the smallest gestures feel suspicious, and it keeps you on edge from start to finish. I love it when films do this.

Our main man John Marston John Marston wrote there weren't any jump scares, which is mostly true. A few moments did catch me off guard but the film definitely doesn't rely on them

I loved it. Time flew by and I can see why it's considered a classic

I watched this myself for the very first time last year, what an incredible film.
 
David 4/5 - good kids movie about David and his path to the crown. The battle with Goliath is excellent. I have some nit picks but it was good and a lot of heart. A lot of singing too.

Throw Down (2004), directed by Johnnie To

Has all the ingredients of a winner: Johnnie To, judo, neon-drenched Hong Kong nights. And I wanted to like it. But it didn't resonate for me.

In a world where everyone has judo street fights in Hong Kong, there's a guy who challenges all the strong people, another guy who refuses to do judo and is a hopeless alcoholic gambler who is always able to easily find stacks of $50000 to wager, and a desperate woman who likes to pick cash up from the ground and hold it in her hands instead of putting it in her bag.

Scenes unfold randomly and meander with little to no dialogue or purpose. The characters barely say anything for the first two acts, then suddenly it becomes a saccharine melodrama to resolve the story. The judo "fights" are frenetic and judo-like in form, but very goofy in practice as throws happen continuously over and over, with little impact. Becomes more like spastic dance choreography.

I absolutely loved TOS and think it's still the best Star Trek has ever been and I also loved TNG. But I've never gotten around to watching the Motion Pictures. I think I'll grab some popcorn this weekend and sit down with 1 & 2.

I hope there's some eyecandy, TOS was seriously cooking in that regard:

I remember watching this movie in theaters when I was a kid

Loved it as a kid

Never rewatched since so it's practically a new movie

The CGI aged well, I heard that this movie was the first to have a fully CGI Character in a leading role. It's really impressive what they did in 1995. The practical sets were really good too and I enjoyed how the mansion looked. Really liked the rest of the cast and the story was a lot of fun. Overall a great movie that was very emotional and touching due to the movie dealing with themes of loss

My kids are about to graduate college and they would have no idea what a laserdisc even is lol

My memory tends to be a bit fuzzy in general but I will never forget watching this movie for the first time and not wanting to pause for a piss because of how thrilling it was.

One of the greatest flicks ever made.

The Housemaid: D

Predicatable plot with boring characters I knew the husband was the bad guy from the start. I figure out the twist of why Sydney Sweeny character went to jail. Basically every twists in this film, I figured it out thirty minutes in. Mostly terrible acting from everyone especially from Sydney Sweeny. Meh
 
Hunting season with Mel Gibson 3/5. Much better than I thought it would be. Good character movie with clear bad guys.
 
Hamnet - 3/5 - well made but slow. It is how out of pain and loss art comes out of it. To be or not to be.
 
Housemaid sucked, I mean sure Sydney is hot, but that's about the only positive. The rest reminded me of a Lifetime movie, just with some actual swearing and nudity. It even had the same kind of an idiotic twist as most of those films.

Saw Iron Lung

Not a bad movie, but it's about 30 minutes longer than it needed to be. I get the impression that Markiplier was very proud of his acting and that's why he didn't cut it down for better pacing.
 
Rental Family (2025)

Easily Brendan Fraser's best movie and far superior to The Whale which I thought was overrated due to its poor writing.

The story isn't groundbreaking, and it tries to make you cry in very predictable ways, but it still works so well. The direction is sublime and the acting from the Japanese cast outshines Fraser in many scenes.

If you have even a passing interest in Japanese culture, or visiting Japan, you will probably like this movie.
 
I am about halfway through the Housemaid - how did this movie get maid, and put in theaters?
 
Seems like my favorite movie from last year is getting a US wide release April 10th

 
The Housemaid 2/5 - this is a terrible movie. It almost feels like it should be some softcore fantasy film that they tricked big named actresses to be in. I only gave it a 2 for Sidney.

Love Hurts: D

Man this film was terrible. The humor didn't hit most of the time and romances weren't believable. The action scenes started to grate on me halfway though the movie. The cast was underdeveloped. The main romance espcially came off as forced with zero chemistry between them. Highly disappointing
 
Predator: Badlands

Watched it with friends last night. Just awful. Movie lost me in the first ten minutes. It's not the Marvel shit. It's the non-alien portrayal of the predators. They're so human, and it's incredibly jarring watching human reactions on the predators' monster faces. The art's really good too but those animations. My god. Seems like a movie that thought it could coast on visuals, the Predator brand, and a safe script, and based off critic and audience reviews, they were correct.

My friends and I had a good time, for a little while anyway, just ragging mercilessly on the movie (for the reasons above, for looking like a video game, and some other shit I don't remember).

Maybe the film would have been better if it wasn't a Predator movie? I wonder if people still would have cared.
