Winter Storm Fern - Stay Warm, US GAF

It's not the snow -- although, people down here aren't prepared for it -- it's the ice. You can't drive on it, can't really escape it -- and it brings trees and power lines down all over the place.

Got a big pine right next to my house that I hope STAYS right next to my house.

And every year there's always a guy on the street who doesnt shovel their snow thinking it'll all melt. So a wall of snow ends up at the end of their driveway from the street plow and pending how the weather warms up and gets cold overnight it hardens into an ice wall. lol

I've never had a big ice wall you cant drive over, but there's been times I still want to hack away at the small bump. For those of you who dont live in cold weather to get iced up mounds, you need something like this to break it apart.

Interesting. I didn't think about how snow could pile up (we don't get enough). But yeah, it's all horrible, really. EDIT: When we get snow, it's a) a little, b) doesn't hang around long, and c) most people don't drive on it. But it also doesn't fell trees and break transmission lines, so -- it's just a day inside for us.

ALL THAT to say -- I'm not qualified to speak on snow. At all.

Stay warm GAF!

I was in central Texas when it froze in 2021 and lost power for 5 days. Got down to 34 degrees in the house and we ran out of food and almost ran out of water. It was dark times (no pun intended).

Make sure you're prepared!

Stay warm GAF, watch out for Fern

I like the snow but I was told the forecast has changed and it won't be bad. So I don't know what's going on.

Where I work they told us if you start early (i.e. like 5am), don't show up until 6:30am. Manufacturing rarely closes! Luckily, I'm a buyer and can work from home if needed. I live 30 miles away and it's looking to be real nasty Sunday. And they are slow to plow my area.

57 at the moment on the back porch looking over Port Royal Sound here, a little north of Hilton Head.

Stay warm and safe folks.

I can confirm, shit's cold. Saw a small bird in the road today like he just froze in the air and died. Pretty sad.
Bro, I'm having a ham sandwich on the back porch, right as you posted this and I laughed too hard.

#Hellbound

My damn wife also came out to inspect my snorting, I was laughing so hard and my grandkids were suspiciously, suspicious.

Eh, shit happens.

-30 where I am in Canada.

So sick and tired of winter, it's making me really despise this planet and it's bullshit weather systems and this country.

Who designed this shit?

I just hope I don't lose power. Losing power sucks so fucking hard. So much of what we do needs power. I remember 10 years ago my house lost power for 18 hours, which isn't terrible but it was amazing how many times I thought about doing something, or needed to do something, and then quickly remembered I need electricity to do it. You just sit around and do nothing. Play a board game? Dust off the old Guess Who or your Checkers Board. Read a book? Hopefully you have a new book. Unless it's night time, then you're squinting at your bullshit Manga until you say fuck it and decide to go to ped at 7pm.

You're basically living in 18th Century America again. Wake up at sunrise, work all day, have a few ales at a tavern and talk to your neighbors about nothing, go home, fuck your ugly sleeping wife, wake up and do it all over again until you die of an infection at 32.

Yep. I live in Middle of Nowhere PA, so when we lose power we are usually last on the list to get it fixed. And we lose power out here a few times per year.

A couple years ago during that huge ice storm, the wife and I were out of power for 6 days, and it was cold. We lived by the fireplace, we cooked on campstoves, we slept by the fireplace. We essentially camped out in our den for a week, playing board games and stuff.

Honestly we had a blast! But we were glad to get our power back after those six days. 😂

Haha. That's awesome.

Only time I lived in the cold was in 2017 or 2018, got no heat. Called my repair guy and he had to replace the pilot light. He showed me it and it looked like shit, so he suspected the previous home owners hadnt had to change it, so I just got burned with bad timing it bombed out.

Middle of winter and he didnt show up for a few days. My thermostat showed the temp in my house dropped to like 8C I think. Had to bundle up with double blankets.

I love snow storms. I live in PA and we had the GOAT storm in 1996 where we almost got 40 inches and then a couple big ones in 2010 and 2011 and then I think it was 2021 we had a big one with like 6-7 inches. But since then it's been pretty quiet in terms of big storms. Just never know how many more years I'm gonna see snow here so I enjoy it when it comes. I love the smell outside during and after a snow storm. It feels like the ultimate state of pure air. So crisp so clean. And I play Noveria music during snow storms and Phendrana Drifts from Metroid Prime.

I just hope the power doesn't go out because football is on Sunday. Stay safe everyone!

IT'S FUCKIN COLD AND WINDY.

DAMN!

But at least I'm all set for the storm.

My absolute favorite beer. 24 should last me the weekend. 😂🍻

Why would I? Where i live there are about 3 days below 32 per year, but 200 days above 90.

It's pretty flat here, so even on summers I can crawl into work if necessary.
Well, you would because of the 3 days below 32 per year or whatever.

Driving with summer wheels on snow and ice is fucking insane man.

I have summer tires on my car but it's all wheel drive so I'm totally ok driving 70 mph on roads!
Spin out city! I kid.

But that reminds me maybe about a decade ago I was driving home from a Xmas party and it was awful weather. hardly any cars on the road too late at night.

There were two cars in front of me driving on a road which I think had 3 lanes (maybe 4, not sure). The front car literally spun out doing a 360! He missed the other car in front of me by maybe 15 ft.

But the best thing of all, the fucking guy's 360 spinnerama was like a stunt driver where his car perfectly aligned back on the road. So all he did when he spun out slowing down was just gas it back and off he went like nothing happened. lol

I wish, it's going to be 61 here in California. We got jipped of winter, barely any snow in the mountains. Just 3 years ago there was up to 20 feet of snow, towering over roads that were plowed.
I'm happy we got a ton of rain. Thank Nature for making up for fucking POS Gavin Newsom.

Ice is a lot worse than snow.

That happened to me in my mustang years ago, one the one snowy day per year we get here. Almost looked like I planned it!

Here, so long as you can wait for the sun to come out, the roads clear pretty quick.

Shit, we've been at -38c with windchill of -52 at points for 2 days. Also have a ton of snow with ice all over. Just a regular winter in Canada. Lol

Pretty much the advice I got was have the HVAC guy come out once a year to clean it out and check it.(Usually for me it's Sept/October) Admittedly I gave that same advice to my brother by he ignored it. (By the time he got around to calling the HVAC guy in his area, the HVAC guy had died.)

While I have grown to loathe the heat and humidity of Florida, I'll take this over snow and ice.
We'll get a couple of chilly nights in the 30's but daytime temps still get up to 50/60.

Pennsylvania here. Did an order pickup for our groceries this morning at 7am from Walmart. They were out of iced tea and pancakes so i had to stop at my mom and pop store this morning and people were already going nuts waiting for the doors to open. Grabbed what I needed and headed home after the Walmart pick up. My son's school already said they will most likely be closed Monday and possibly Tuesday. When I went this morning, it was reading -1 on the car and -12 with the wind chill.

I remember the storm in January of 2016. It started on a Friday and was wicked all the way to Monday. People who were scheduled stayed at the hospital over the weekend so they didn't miss their shifts. At the end of my shift I loaded my car up with people that didn't want to stay and dropped them off on the way home. I had a Jeep Commander at the time and had no issues. I wasn't staying over for anything. My wife and I are both off this weekend so we are just going to watch TV and be lazy. I think we are expected to get 10-18 inches in our area.

You guys name your winter storms? In Canada we just call those regular weekends.
Not typically. This one covers so much of the US, and in many parts where winter storms are rarer and not as extreme (supposedly) as this one that it's been granted a distinct designation. And like IntentionalPun said, The Weather Channel named it. Enough people felt it deserving of a name this time that it kind of caught on.

My office window just randomly sprung a leak from the rain. Ugh 😣

We're expecting wintry mix here shortly. Not nearly as bad as the rest of the country, so I won't complain.

Hope you're all holding up GAF
