Marathon Releases March 5 '26 - $39.99

Got my collectors today. Didn't see any codes inside to redeem any in game items. Nothing in my email?

Edit: Seems those won't come to emails until March 5th.

Good to know! Yeah, I just got codes for the game and the Destiny 2 content. Nothing else.

We need a Marathon CCU bet thread where the losers have to change their avatar to Michael Pachter for a month.

ChorizoPicozo ChorizoPicozo , are you in?
No, we dont need another CCU thread
I mean, people are going to make the CCU thread anyway, right?

In terms of a bet, I think this game needs at least 300K at minimum for the narrative to be considered a successful launch. Around 100K, and people are going to catfight over whether the game is a success or a flop.

But personally, while I would love for this game to flop and be ridiculed by the Internet Army due to Bungie's wokeness, I'm more interested in what decisions and game design choices the game will make that cause people to praise it or bash it.

300k is realistic. That open beta, with progress that carries over + PlayStation marketing, is going to lead to a massive first weekend.

No way this hits 300k. 100k tops.

More intrested in if the people who do buy it stick around.

It'll depend for me how the ranked works, what there is to grind/chase, and how quickly they add more/what they add.

So you think the game will be at edge of flopping and barely succeeding

They better, at 100K the game could be dead before the one year anniversary. (especially knowing Bungie's financial situation).

But this aspect of game retention will be another battle in itself. I don't see the game having enough meat to keep casuals hooked.

With all due respect you have no idea what you are talking about.

If you'd actually played it you'd know this isn't aimed at casual players for starters.

Im gonna read all the lore stuff in this game. Hopefully some of it will be voiced since the VA cast is insane
Yeah so there's six runners and six faction AI to voice, but they announced way more actors than that, so I wonder what else will be voiced. Assuming audio logs and stuff.

Yeah 100k on pc is my bet aswell with settling around 20k on the long run, but this will be more popular on console
You guys think Claire Obscure 33 is going to have a bigger Steam CCU high than Marathon?

I also don't see Marathon being bigger on console than PC. The PC demo gravitate towards more complex games and more PvP centric games. Console games tend to be more simple and more PvE oriented. Marathon looks much more like a PC gamers game to me.

I'm a PC gamer and a man's man!

I don't see why you'd compare a single player title that's Incredibley front loaded against this.

You are failing for ChorizoPicozo ChorizoPicozo bait. If this hits half of Arc Raiders launch day numbers so around 125k, then I'd consider it a success. It still has a lot to prove and there will be a hell of a lot of people who play one match during the free weekend and instantly label the game trash regardless.

Because the PC demo doesn't go for single player games like they go for PvP multiplayer.

If Claire Obscure hit 135k, Marathon will easily double it.

If you go watch one of the early interviews with Ziegler (May or June 2025), he's asked what separates Marathon from the other extraction games, his response was that they want to on-board new players better than the rest of the market.

If that's one of the design pillars, in combination with ARC Raiders "teaching" the masses what this genre is, I don't think a large percentage of players bouncing off will be an issue. Obviously single player Sally, who succumbs to the open beta hype will do that, but I don't think the PvP market will.

If ARC Raiders opened the heavy door to kick off the Extraction era, Marathon will walk in.

I'd really like the game to do well as I think it has a lot of potential and has promised to solve some of the genres problems. However it plays like its made for a very specific demographic of gamers, at least it did last time I played. I don't think it will go down well with the wider gaming public.

I remember playing the test and for the first few hours I just kept thinking wow who the fuck is this actually aimed at? Harcore Tarkov players will dismiss it, casual Arc Raiders players won't like it. The usual suspects will cry that its not got a campaign or PVE mode etc.

If it breaks out I'll be very surprised but if it doesn't then thats ok as long as they deliver on what they promised then ill be a happy camper because its the best thing they've done in a very long time.

Personally I think they are taking a huge risk. Hope it pays off as you don't see swings like this very often.

The top 6 games on Steamcharts right now...

1. Counter Strike
2. DotA 2
3. PUBG
4. Apex Legends
5. ARC Raiders
6. Rust

That's all competitive PvP gamers. I don't really see how we're niche. We're the majority.

I think it's aimed at PvP players who have had to put up with lame progression in their games forever. Nobody playing those top games likes having their progression wiped every 30 minutes. Bouncing between Gold II and Gold III for 3 years straight is a design failure that people don't see yet.

The "usual suspects" would have you believe Bloodborne is the most important game of all time. The usual suspects rejected Battle Royale. They know nothing, Jon Snow.

Fair. If Marathon fails or hits smaller than my goalposts I can never show my face here again. I'll be like the losing candidate in one of these 3rd world countries who has to flee persecution.

Yup. Huge swing.

Agreed but its a very tough market to break into. Those titles you mention a lot of the players play only that game. Getting them to play something else is a huge task.

I bounce between Diamond 2 and 1. If you are stuck in gold 2 then thats a skill issue.

Agreed. But there will be many of them quick to trash something they don't understand.

Dude your goalposts are so huge (small?)its bound to miss. But ill be here to pick up the pieces and offer a shoulder to cry on.

I guess it depends on the person's perspective of "bomb hard", I mean, it's already done better than a lot of similar and successful/semi-successful titles on Steam alone. Which, is already more than Concord, lol.
Bomb means whatever the naysayers deem it to mean. We already have one user shifting his goal posts up to 300k ccu on steam after realising his DOA prediction is a bust.

See how the free weekend lands.
It'll be big. Battlefield 6, a $70 dollar game, peaked at 750k thanks in part to it's lame progression open beta. I see the "progress carries over" open beta being far more effective for Marathon.

I don't think so. I talk to a lot of randoms in the games I play and just about everyone I talk to plays other games. I genuinely think if you asked 100 people in any of those games, 95 - 98 of them would say "I play this game as well as X, Y and Z."

The myth of the mono gamer was created by the bubble we're in. I see no evidence for it.

Now, they all check out other games but they obviously don't stick with other games. The Finals had huge week 1 numbers thanks to PvP players but they all went back to their main games after kicking the tires.

I don't think Marathon is the type of game you play for a weekend and then go back to playing Apex Legends.

You cheeky twat.
Agreed. But there will be many of them quick to trash something they don't understand.
The bubble trashes every big multi-player game. Fortnite was a fad. Warzone sucks. Peak is friend slop.

We must learn to ignore the bubble and listen to the wind in the trees. Mother nature doesn't lie, she can't lie.

I'll need bail instead. This will be me on March 7th...

We don't know progression carries over yet but i suspect it will if they give us the full game to test shortly before launch.

Just going of my own experience. I only played Destiny 1 and nothing else for a good few years. I know friends who only play COD or CS and have done so for many years.

I think Marathon need a good onboarding experience because that was certainly missing in the test.

Its not. I plan on mainlining this thing for a good while, if it delivers.
Short term I know ill get 50 hours out of it, but does it have that long term loop to keep me engaged? They claim it has, lets see
Now we are talking.

I'm about to say something profound.

The #1 reason people don't stick with multi-player games is because they check them out, see basically everything the game has to offer in a night or a weekend, and go "Yeah, I've played this all before. I'm going back to my usual."

You want mystery. You want the unknown. You want to work for it.

Extraction solves for that exact problem. Marathon will tell every player "You can quit and go play Worlds Edge (Apex Legends map) for the 1,000th time, but fu** out of here if you think we're showing you Outpost, Cryo Archive, or that gold Runner Core you heard about. You're not going to see what a high level Runner feels like or what's in the 7th vault. You're a b***h and you'll come back.

Marathon will not put out on the first date.

That didn't bomb. Wasn't it just a mp mode in one of the splinter cell games?

Not many people were ready for its multiplayer genius.
I'd say it bombed. Pandora Tomorrow SvM was nearly perfect but Ubisoft didn't get the traction they expected so they made it more perfect with Chaos Theory. When that didn't hit they changed course with a more dumbed down action focused SvM after that.

The masses just don't like stealth for some reason.

Fucking great game though. I miss the time when Ubisoft took risks and made quality games.
