James Cameron Speaks On Killing Off Central Characters in Alien 3

I like Alien 3. I think it's because it exceeded my expectations and it's a decent sci-fi, survival horror movie imo.

The isolation/desolation of the prison planet captured my imagination.
It's got great atmosphere, with the stranded characters having to fight the xeno with improvised weapons.

I for one, found Newt quite annoying, especially when she screamed.
It was a shame they killed off Hicks though.

Edit: I'm way more annoyed about them killing Shaw off in-between films than Newt and Hicks.

And yet Alien 3 is better than all that Avatar bullshit he's been doing for more than a decade now.
Alien cubed is also better than the sequels that came afterwards and I stand by that.

Anyway, I thought it amusing how Fincher referred to the pharyngeal jaw of the Alien as the "filing cabinet drawer."

The alien's mini dick-jaw is completely ridiculous when you think about it. It doesn't serve any purpose other than to look weird on camera.

It doesn't give the alien any significant extra reach. It reduces the bite radius - like turning a shark into a piranha. That teeny tiny mouth-on-a-stick would have a far lower biting force than the alien's normal jaw.

I'm reading Cameron's Tech Noir book (it's his drawings and stories about his work and career) and found this:

Also the alien queen comes from an older story of his where humans bioengineer a creature to work on terraforming Venus. The creature goes rogue and is defeated by a woman in a powerloader...

Charles Dance, Pete Postlethwaite and the dude who tells the Alamo joke in American Werewolf in London?

Y'all are fucking crazy. Alien 3 is great.

I can watch alien 3 for the depressing tone, but it's really a movie that should exist in an alternate timeline. Everything I like about Alien Resurrection is at a script/concept level. It was really ruined by the Director and all his weird decisions. What a wacky choice by Fox.

"They cast it wrong. And they designed it wrong. And they scored it wrong. They did everything wrong that they could possibly do" - Joss Whedon

Interesting. One of the DVD extras claimed he adapted a script he had called "Mother" for aliens. He basically got to make that movie except use that awesome alien character design for the creatures.

Not comparable.

The equivalent would be if T3 killed off Sarah and John in the first scene.

But they did kill Sarah, and Terminator too, in fact they did it in the worst way possible, they made them complete jokes, sad caricatures to prop up their retarded DEI plot of the 90 pound girl being an amazing leader... somehow. It would be more merciful if they just killed them off like John

Worth it though cause that character was unforgettable, whatever her name was.

To be fair, the only thing I remember really well from that movie is that glimpse of the future where she's revealed as the future leader of the resistance and they show this 90 pound girl from that camera angle that tries to make her look like some great leader and you think, "no fucking way this is a serious movie, right? WTF am I watching?"

Alien 3 was in production many years later, the actress who played Newt was not an actor any longer (and would be like 10 years older) so they would have had to recast her. I hate recastings and pretty much always prefer a character die then be recast.
Their deaths were necessary as a reset to keep Ripley as the focal main character. I don't get why people don't understand that. Also I can't imagine a scenario (on any planet or Starship) where Hicks and Newt and Ripley are just happily hanging out while we build up to the Alien threat. These characters already had their arcs together.... you would just be spinning the tires on shit we have already paid off. The alternative to that is no build up to the threat, they wake up and are immediately under attack.... they would have to abandon a 3or4 act structure and then the movie would be a 2 hour sprint to the finish which just isn't plausible for scifi action movies with a realistic budget.
