Top 10 Games of The 2020's So Far

Not 10 games, and not in any order-

Street Fighter 6
Elden Ring
Lies of P
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Metaphor: ReFantazio
Remnant 2
Resident Evil 4 Remake

I still need to play Indiana Jones and Unicorn Overlord as they might make the list.

Let me see if I can catch most of the stuff I've played from the decade too so people can gauge my taste from my top 10. Note: I'm going by NA, not original release dates

Top 10, in no particular order:

Risk of Rain 2 - Still a fantastic roguelite, even after some bumpy patches after Gearbox took over. Can be fun single player but my best memories are with my friends conquering the Eclipse difficulties with the whole cast. Looking forward to DLC3 next month! :)
Helldivers 2 - Democratically approved TPS that is either the awesomest shit ever or a broken piece of garbage, and I love it.
Street Fighter 6 - Coming from a long-time SF player, the best the franchise has ever been imo. Art design, character balance, system mechanics, and just how fun it is to play. Music's the only step down imo. Melty Blood: TL for example blows it out of the water there.
Hades - Roguelike with a great loop and just as great writing and performances.
Trails to Azure - This one's cheating considering it's def. a 2011 game just super delayed but Azure is awesome and this is my list. As opposed to Sky which is comprised of wonderful character stories, Azure is the glorious build-up and culmination of a political drama. It's a game so good I found myself wondering how it followed such a mediocre predecessor (Zero) that felt like a whole game as a prologue to this one.
Chained Echoes - The RPG inspired by SNES RPGs that actually delivers. Innovative turn-based mechanics, great music and world, decent cast and writing. Biggest criticism is the localization at the start is rocky.
Gravity Circuit - Fast Mega Man X where you punch things, run even faster, and grapple swing even faster. Short, sweet, fantastic.
Record of Lodoss War -Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth - Short Metroidvania. This one grabs a spot largely on the back of gorgeous sprite work and a balls-to-the-walls soundtrack, although the gameplay's definitely not bad.
Lies of P - What Elden Ring should have been (ER's still fine, but Lies of P is the true inheritor of the Dark Souls spirit).
Witch on the Holy Night - I'm cheating again. This is a visual novel, and a 100% static one too, but it's so gorgeously drawn, shot, and directed with an impeccable core cast (and seiyuu) that I want to give it a spotlight.

Didn't make the cut:

Elden Ring
Cyberpunk 2077
Expedition 33
SMT V: Vengeance
Trails from Zero
Trails of Cold Steel III
Trails of Cold Steel IV
Trails into Reverie
Trails through Daybreak
Nayuta: Boundless Trails
Ys 9
Star Ocean The Second Story R
Persona 3 Reload
Unicorn Overlord
Tales of Arise
40k: Rogue Trader
40k: Darktide
Barotrauma
Monster Hunter Rise
Super Mario Wonder
Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Metroid Dread
Gunfire Reborn
Back 4 Blood
Risk of Rain Returns
Silksong
Tsukihime Remake (part 1)
Fate/hollow ataraxia
Doom Eternal
Penny's Big Breakaway
Synthetik 2
Bladechimera
Super Meat Boy Forever
Drainus
The Ascent

This list is actually pretty short considering how much I game, but I also tend to play the same games a lot and I tend to dip into my backlog a lot too, which, after going through my Steam history, happens to be often.

Lies of P
Elden Ring
Resident Evil 4 Remake
Yakuza Like a Dragon
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Expedition 33
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Metaphor Re: Fantazio
Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter
Baldur's Gate 3

Gotta do some honourable mentions although some of these switch out into the top 10 honestly, it's close:

Metroid Dread, Stellar Blade, Unicorn Overlord, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

--- will not be replaced ---

The Last of Us Part 2
--- could be replaced ---

List not in order, aside from Xenoblade 3 being my game of the decade so far.

Xenoblade 3
Elden Ring
Tears of the Kingdom
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
Shin Megami Tensei V
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
Persona 5 Royal (I'm counting it)
Baldur's Gate 3
Rogue Trader
College Football 25

I know I'm forgetting a bunch of Switch games I loved but this is my top ten off the top of my head.

I must be missing something with Clair Obscur. Yeah the story, art and soundtrack are good to great, but I'm just not understanding how the gameplay is fun after the first few hours.

The Parry/Dodge/jump mechanic is boring me to bits after act 2. I love me a bit of turn based, but having to do a QTE four or more times with varying levels of 'Im about to hit you, no really, I'm coming, press the button, go on I dare you before I...oh too late I've hit you' before we get a go isn't fun beyond about 10 fights. Everything seems to basically be that. It. Never. Changes.
All I know is that you did miss something because to me this was the best game ever. Everything was perfect. I'm not sure why we disagree because the game is just that good.

I can't imagine any fan of of the original Final Fantasy VII didn't love expedition 33, so my question to you is did you even like Final Fantasy seven? My theory is the people who don't like this game, have weird taste to begin with, hipster taste, and that you probably don't like Final Fantasy seven. So my question is to you do you like Final Fantasy seven? If FFVII isn't one of your goats, it makes perfect sense. We just have completely different tastes.

I did like Final Fantasy VII. I liked Final Fantasy X too which is imo closer to E33 in that it's actually turn based. I adore strategy games too. Especially turn based tactical games. I just don't like that E33 is basically always parry/dodge the enemy attack. Which is what I kinda of hinted I didn't enjoy.

I don't have a load of time to game so I haven't explored all the picto and such, but I can't seem to see a build that lets me (if I want) to largely ignore that mechanic and use traditional turn based strategies to defeat foes.

Later (midway really as I'm finishing up act 2) it's becoming boring imo due to this. Every boss has a turn which is just as I described. Loads of attacks that feint all the time for a random period, then swiftly attack.

New characters, with their own mechanics (Monoco) are introducing when the loop is largely bedded in. Lune sets them on fire, Maelle ruins them. Parry/dodge/jump parry/gradient parry as appropriate. Hell all those I've just listed are all essentially the same thing, just a different QTE prompt.

I've clocked Sekiro, I can play and enjoy rhythm based games too. I just want some variety. The combat doesn't seem to offer much of that.

Like I say, I must be missing something...I love the story and art and, bugger my the soundtrack, but the combat just ain't doing it for me long term with the overwhelming reliance on a single QTE parry enemy technique

Tons of games still in my backlog, hard to make a top 10. But these five are in my top 10 without a doubt. This is not in any particular order except that Elden Ring would be number 1.

  • Elden Ring
  • Nine Sols
  • Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
  • Lies of P
  • Hollow Knight: Silksong
Would perhaps put in Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, and Tekken 8 also.

Lies of P
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Super Mario Bros Wonder
Expedition 33
It Takes Two
Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection
Pentiment
Hi-Fi Rush

Elden Ring
Astro Bot
Balatro
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Baldur's Gate 3
Ghost of Tsushima
Silent Hill 2 Remake
Half-life Alyx
Dreams

Man that's pretty good list I would replace Elden ring with Zelda Totk and take off balatro and put cyberpunk on there but overall a great list imho

This list is more than 10 games and the list is not in order

Kai No Kiseki

This game basically is a bomb drop in certain aspects when it comes to the story, that's all I'll say about that

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Future Redeemed

I didn't hate Xenoblade Chronicles 3 but I felt Future Redeemed is what XC3 should have been

Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition

The Mecha game I always wanted and the fact you can go into your Skells with no load times with that fantastic song playing while you are exploring the world is such a memorable experience. They did a great job with porting this game to the Switch with some much needed QOL features. Still the best looking Xenoblade game. The story and cast are actually quite good and loved doing sidequests to find out more of the lore of the world. I just wish they the story wasn't so short. The added new story is nothing special though

Fantasian Neo Dimension (Haven't beaten it yet)

I got to the final boss and still have three to four things to do that are optional. I LOVE this game and am eventually gonna to go back to beat it

Star Ocean The Divine Force

I will always prefer 3D Star Ocean to 2D Star Ocean. Using DUMA to explore the enviroments and to find hidden areas for hard to reach treasure is a lot of fun. I especially like how you can use in battle too. It's a close second to the 3rd Star Ocean game for me in terms of gameplay though

Star Ocean The Second Story R

While not my favorite in the franchise this remake was awesome. I only did Lena route and I plan to do Claude route someday. I did everything in this game. My only disapointment is that this version of the game feels less tougher than previous versions

Trails Into Reverie/Trails From Zero/Trails To Azure/Trails of Daybreak I/II

The rest of the Trails games I consider to be great. Great story, more expansion and reveals when it comes to the world and lore, more interesting character. Great gameplay

Live A Live

This was a good surprise. I ended up loving it, the story and characters are great. The gameplay is a lot of fun

13 Sentinels Aegis Rim

My only issue with this game is the gameplay segments, but the VN/Story segments more than made up for that. Cast is memorable. Beautiful looking game too

The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening Remake

I love the graphical style of this game and this is the first 2D Zelda I played. I did everything and I love the gameplay especially transvering the dungeons

Eastward

Graphically has one of the best pixel art I seen in game when it comes sprites and backgrounds. Animation is fantastic too. Story and cast is fantastic. Gameplay is a lot of fun. I did everything in this game

Sea of Stars

Another good surprise. I did everything and I especially loved the battle system

The House In Fata Morgana

I haven't played as many VNs as I wanted to yet but this is by far my favorite in that genre. The plot and characters are amazing. The character designs and backgrounds used are fantastic. The music especially is in the Top 5 when it comes to Videogame OSTs for me
