Star Citizen Single-Player Squadron 42 Reveals Odin System, Still on Track for 2026 Release

To me thats not postive, it tells me the game lacks focus and its trying to be everything for everybody and often than not it does none of it well.

Eh? That's like saying because Halo has on-foot shooting and then you can embark a vehicle to fly or drive around lacks focus.

It's simple really, you'll follow a nobody that got mixed into an impossible to win war, goes into flight academy, from locker equipment, to NPC chitchats on a ship, to boarding a ship, flying faster than light, landing on a space station or surface of a planet, do a run and gun mission, etc. I'm not sure what's hard to grasp here.

If SQ42 actually exists and if it's actually released one day and if it's actually good, I'll buy it and play it

I'll never have any interests in Scam Citizen and SQ42 will have no impact on that

That's a totally fair take

Some peoples never cared for the MMO, just like now there's MMO players who don't care about SQ42. But this constant fight between both ressources, MMO players whining that they are bringing in the most cash into the project while CIG puts too much focus on SQ42, or SQ42 backers who think the MMO is a distraction and shouldn't have happened...

Let's just say that I think SQ42 HAS to launch, I think that was the plan with bringing back peoples to UK to focus on SQ42 with the new director and get to the finish line once and for all for that project.

Of anything that Chris Roberts in this adventure has shown, SQ42 is the only thing that actually is claimed to be near the finish line. Its also the only thing that could run on the current-gen consoles.

I think the biggest issue for them now is when to release it in 2026, considering GTA VI is going to be the game that drags all the attention away. And 2027? SQ42 will be beyond the curve.

I read a lot of time ago they didnt discard a possible ps4 port. It was no officially announced but they had that in mind.
That's just PR bs - not unlike the claims they made about engine changes to skirt legal issues.

Their tech stack is built on FP64 - and PS4/X1 CPUs have like a 4x performance penalty running in that mode (and for a PC exclusive, those CPUs were pretty bad without that penalty already). Not to mention they were basically relying on SSD to get anything resembling playable performance a decade ago - a port for last gen would have to be a complete rewrite to make it run.

Halo released like 5 games in the time SQ42 'might' release one (and I'm not convinced yet it will).
I do agree lack of focus isn't the right word - Robert's cinema ambitions are dominating majority of their public showcases, it's always been clear he wasn't out to build games but 'cinematic experiences'.
Lack of focus would be a description for the Minds Eye - where Benzies literally wanted everything from every 3rd person adventure game ever made inside his magnus opus.

GTA 6 is not on PC so it doesn't really matter for 2026

Even months later at one point peoples will get over GTA 6. They just have to not launch near it.

Ehm, yes it does matter because like, that's the biggest game of 2026. The amount of time folks will spent on there will be ungodly.

You do know SQ42 is only PC for 2026 realistically right? When is GTA 6 on PC? Not 2026 let me tell ya that.

Let's look at 2013. GTA 5, Last of Us, Assassin's creed Black flag, Tomb raider, Metal gear rising revengeance, Batman Arkham Origins, Battlefield 4, Crysis 3, Super Mario world, Beyond two souls, Saints row IV, Bioshock Infinite

These games got through fine even with the mega GTA 5 in the same year and on same platforms. PC only release SQ42 in not the same months around GTA 6 (for media coverage) is fine.

But the game for 2026 is a full blown ~40h campaign

Sorry if this has already been covered in an FAQ or elsewhere:

So will the Kickstarter backers get all three episodes as part of their pledge? I guess we should be grateful with just one episode as it is maybe in 2026 😂

I agree.

Haha, I had to look it up because I only backed the low tier. Apparently some early backers in some tiers had episode 2 for free. So yes, I guess some peoples, if it ever comes to it, would get the 2nd game.

If its good and a success, I think they have a path to make the sequels much faster as the tech would be there already.
If its a bad game, because I mean there's no guarantees here, then I fear for the rest. They would just continue the MMO I think as it is insane money yearly.

"Your Oct 14, 2012 payment to Cloud Imperium Games Corporation for $30.00 is complete."

Apparently I backed it before they even launched the kickstarter campaign. My descendants should get episode 1 & 2 I guess.

Based on the newsletter it doesn't sound like they're talking about anything S42 for Citcon. Was expecting they finally reveal a date so looks like it's targeting the very end of 2026 at the earliest.

Im still amazed EA didn't resurrect Wing Commander when they eyed how much money Star Citizen was raking in for a game that isn't even released.

You would have thought the suits would have been all over it.

Maybe that Star Wars Squadrons game didn't do well enough, could have screwed with their appetite for spaceship games.

Super down for this. Not holding my breath but if it comes out, I'm all over it. They might have been sidetracked building a dlc empire but I want to see what they can do with a vision for modern wing commander.

I could not be more excited for a game. This is well above anything like GTA6 for me. I'm not a backer, just someone who's stood back on the sidelines until there's been something to see.

I hope people can be objective and judge it for what it is. No other game has sniffed at the epic scope of what they're doing. Yes, would it be frustrating if you were waiting 10 years ago? Yes. But the wait seem to be almost over.

What I actually played in the free weekend back around 6 months ago impressed me. It's pretty amazing what they are trying to achieve and there has not been a game like this that has felt like a seminal moment in a long time. I can only judge it for what I see. You can joke and hate but the signal vs noise is telling me this looks pretty epic. Not every game has the backing of this (and Star Citizen).

I hope it comes to Steam but will buy it regardless.

There is no game. That's their shtick.

Star Wars Squadron was their answer to new found demand for space sims. Chris Roberts was making a new spiritual Wing Commander, so EA put out a spiritual sequel to the X-Wing/TIE Fighter games.

EA had no faith in it which is why it was priced at $40, and had no LC pipeline. It sold beyond expectations. Was it some crazy success? No, the space sim genre is still very niche. Disney's massive mishandling of the Star Wars IP and killing off interest and turning away fans probably has more to do with why the game never received a sequel.

There were other open world games, as well as Eve as a Space MMO. But nothing combined dog fighting, with on foot exploration, and FPS combat quite like this. Battle Cruiser 3000ad and it's updated versions tried to get close. But that game released in a even more bug ridden state than the Alpha of Star Citizen that people are playing right now.

For me the big promised feature we haven't seen yet is the full VR integration. Right now it's just 2D with head tracking. Working VR will just add that much more making the universe that much more engaging.

While we cope lol

Is this thing possibly going to launch on Steam or use the RSI launcher?

I don't think it will and past information seem to say the same. All indications is that CIG will sell the game directly.

But I mean we've seen stranger things like CDPR having their own store and still selling Witcher 3 there so..

You were right btw, I had only seen the newsletter on website but the email presentation seem to say that as you said and today they confirmed that Squadron 42 will NOT be AT ALL present at Citizencon 2025. The team is heads down to focus on their release target and no time to waste making marketing, trailers or presentation on it. I'm sad we won't see more of it but it also makes sense to not waste a team's time with this. E3 demos by dev accounts took huge amounts of time apparently. No use for marketing this anyway you can't even buy it if you wanted.

Still feels like some kind of tech demo. I mean, what's it even about? Humans just living in space? And why would it be interesting to anyone? There's no "hook" to get people interested. I look at these pictures and get the same feeling as from some arena shooter with no single-player campaign (even if I know this IS a single-player campaign). Articles keep blabbering about "enemies" in this game but why are they enemies? Sounds like a "uh-oh, ALIENS attack us, we must fight!" story where humans are arrogant assholes, branding the other party as villains just because they're different. I bet it would be full of patriotic militaristic bullshit and no real plot whatsoever, apart from dubious missions where "glorious humankind" defeats some kind of space-snakes.
What do you mean? There's literally a lore website. There's a whole story campaign.
