Ampere Analyst expects Sony to react to Xbox’s Activision deal with a major acquisition of its own

Sony already has Squenix in the palm of their hands. That would be a terrible acquisition.

EA on the hand.. Bandai Namco. Konami IP's. Those would all be great acquisitions.
It'd actually be great. Make sure no one can snatch them away while also not diminishing their brand. EA not being on every platform imaginable, would only reduce their worth.

Ampere Analysis maybe didn't realize that Sony decreased their acquisitions and investements budget for this FY until around $140M before acquiring Audeze, and decided to keep acquisitions for the mid to long term, pretty likely matching the timeframe when they'll have completed the spinoff of their banking division to sell 80+% of it (which will take 2-3 years according to their estimate).

PS Studios+Bungie have several shooters that have been under development for many years, and they'll continue having CoD for at least 10 years. In addition to this, the Zenimax acquisition didn't cause any advantage to Xbox (with important YoY decreases in hw sales) or Gamepass (did stop growing and got stagnant since many months ago).

I think they won't need to make any acquisition to counter it, at least for a few years.
I do think Sony will make an acquisition in Korea, but that's not in response to Xbox.

Sony literally doesn't care about Xbox at this stage, it seems like. The last time they saw them as competition was when they were revamping PS Plus. Other than that, Sony just keeps doing its own thing because Xbox hasn't posed real competition to them in more than a decade now.

If a third place company like Microsoft struggled with getting an acquisition approved, can you imagine how much trouble and scrutiny Sony would face as the literal market leader?

I don’t think it’s gonna happen, and I think Sony is smart enough to not attempt a publisher acquisition.

I can maybe see HoyoVerse?

Square enix , Capcom or Sega make the most sense surely. Microsoft seem like theyd go for Ubisoft as they have marketing deals with a lot of the tentpole Ubisoft games too
I don't think Ubisoft is on the table for Microwoft as they have sold the Activision cloud gaming rights to them as part of the concessions for CMA approval?

Buy Square and then force Nomura into retirement.

Edit-

The only purchases I'd get behind would be something dedicated to VR, but even then I like what indie devs are doing and want to let it play out. Sony is better suited to keep funding RE VR modes.

I cannot believe "Analyst" is a profession anybody should take seriously if they come out with the most basic ideas there could possibly be.

No shit Sony probably has to respond in one way or another.

Is even more consolidation the answer? Fuck no it isn't. Not for the consumer.

Well, thinking in long-term I agree.

In the short-term Microsoft won't really achieve much from these acquisitions, but it already has a huge structure of studios to compete very well in the next gen. And they've already said they're going to acquire more studios. So yes, Sony needs to respond somehow.

Yes, Sony is too dominant in their main business: consoles and game subs. And also has no problems growing in new areas like PC, mobile, tv shows, GaaS etc.

The acquisition won't affect them in all these areas. In fact, Sony did many smart investments that very soon will start showing important results (like Concord and Marathon releases).

Growing in Asia (specially outside Japan), and particularly in mobile and PC is one of the goals that they still didn't fullfill meaningfully. I think they won't make any acquisition in the next 2-3 years, but if I had to bet once they do it I think their next big acquisition will be some company big in Asia (particularly outside Japan and in mobile and/or PC).

So yes, I think some Korean company could be a likely target. Specially one that is also used to make console games and/or to make console to mobile adaptations, or that make at least ocasionally for F2P contnent, adaptations to videogames of anime stuff.

Get Capcom and Sqaure Enix and make them skip Xbox for their next releases.

Nintendo might retaliate and lobby Japanese internal politics against it if it came to that. On top of Microsoft probably trolling and lobbying against it of course. The money involved to get that out of the gate after what happened with Activision will probably put all big acquisitions dead in their tracks

Soo why not From Software which is a relatively tiny acquisition but held high in core gamers minds?

If every from software game was a PlayStation exclusive, that would sell millions of consoles in its own.

Millions of console sales would lead to more game sales on the console, too.

Please don’t buy From Software. We need these on PC

Ubisoft will get acquired by someone at only €3.75B market cap so probably them.

Don't think the CMA would approve any of the big threes acquiring Ubisoft after signing the cloud deal with Microsoft. I think Square Enix would be the company Sony would try to acquire.

You're crazy if you think Sony(Playstation) doesn't care about Microsoft(Xbox).

Yes, lets all cheer for more consolidation of the gaming industry. I’m sure the consumer will benefit from all of this in the long run.

At least in terms of PS5 versus Series S/X, looks like the course is set. Series has lost momentum, Starfield notwithstanding. Potentially doing a mid gen refresh of a series x with no disk drive and an enhanced controller as a replacement for a more powerful mid gen unit won't move the needle.

In order of importance.
Take2, Capcom, CD Projekt Red, Kadokawa, Hideo Kojima, Square. This is what Sony need quality developers that comes with triple A IPs, not IPs alone.

EA or T2 are the only similar acquisitions to ABK and both would put pressure on MS as some sort of mutually assured destruction tactic. Both would take too much $ and get blocked probably.

Then again imagine a world where COD+Bethesda etc are exclusive to xbox while EAFC/Battlefield/NFS/sports or GTA are exclusive to PS, it would suck and the customer is the biggest loser.

Acquisition wars suck.

If I'm Sony.. I'd go after T2. Fits Sony like a glove. There is a media synergy there that no one else can match.

If I'm Microsoft.. I'd bid even more for T2.

Whoever buys T2 wins.

T2 would have been a way better get for MS than Activision. They do those polished cinematic games that MS just can't seem to figure out.

My bet is Capcom and Square Enix at the same time. Sony will buy up the Japanese ones so Playstation still has cool shit if Microsoft buys up all the American ones

Go to a war of acquisitions with a trillion dollar company.

Sounds like a smart plan.
MS won't be buying up anymore big publishers like EA or TakeTwo. They struggled to get this over the line. What's not so smart about Sony buying a big publisher?

The battle now is for content. And Microsoft got a treasure trove over the last 3 years.

Problem Sony have is the fact Microsoft could out bid them without any problem at all. I'm hoping Microsoft just concentrate now on the Studios they have and get them creating and releasing great content. To be fair apart from Insomniac Sony aren't doing too great with their Studios either, look at the shit show with Naughty Dog.

There is literally no publisher that is actually worth the money from Sony's point of view. Surely MS can gobble up Bethesda and ABK and really not feel a thing just to shift the power position on the market, but Sony works more strategically. When Sony or MS buys a publisher, they are buying a competitor and the "value" of the IP and the publishing infrastructure is basically dead weight on the price. Take a look of the industry and you can bet that the executives in Capcom, Square Enix and similar big publishers are losing sleep every night over the next commercial flop with a 120m budget. What's the point of spending billions for those issues?

Buying studios however, is only a smart move. Let's say Insomniac - 230 million dollars. What do you get for that money? A few teams of extremely talented people with a great track record, of course their technology. Sony owns the R&C IP already, and whatever project Insomniac would have worked on, they would have needed a publisher anyway - SIE, MS or EA for example. Staying independent must have it's benefits, but also risks. Sony has even acquired studios that have just been formed that have not put out a single game yet.

Are there still any "big" studios that are possibly available to buy? Remedy, Kojima Productions? Both of them probably want to stay independent. Sony should rather be buying licenses to Konami IP to bring back fan favorites, and create new IP.

Honestly, I could see that this chain of events might make other third-party publishers relationships with Sony even better. Microsoft already has Call Of Duty, Doom, Overwatch and Halo as first-party titles. Why exactly would EA fight hard over Xbox players' attention with the next Battlefield game, and why would Microsoft even care?

Yep MS is far ahead of the curve already. Launching their pro console in 2020. Amazing stuff really while Sony just launched their normal console back then.

The thing is that games sell enough on PlayStation & Nintendo platforms that they don't need to buy out other big name companies because everyone was doing well on their own.

The only concern I have is that if Sony doesn't make some acquisitions, that Microsoft will. Which is pretty concerning. MS has said even after Activision that they weren't done w/ acquisitions, so Sony really can't afford to be complacent about their relationship with these publishers.

I doubt capcom would sell right now. They are probably doing the best they ever have. Monster hunter and RE series have all been really well received critically and commercially.

Trillion dollar company still comfortably in 3rd place this gen with half the userbase of the industry leader ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Some people never learn that all the money on the planet doesn't guarantee success. You still need smart people to drive your business.

If Sony wants to expand their GAAS approach I can't see a better alternative. Ubisoft would be a good buy.

Rainbow Six
The Division
Riders Republic

and many more alongside Bungie's offerings. That's your GAAS portfolio sorted.

Then just fucking focus on single player games please.

If the industry is in favour of traditionally selling games, Sony won’t have to do much other than maintain their current partnerships.

They have the best CG hardware solution for 3rd parties between the PS5/DE. If they can succeed with GaaS and Naughty Dog or SSM can drop a new IP by 2025, they’re in even greater shape for NG.
