Starfield has 'Mixed' reviews on Steam (Up: 'Recent' reviews are Mostly Negative)

Peak persecution complex where now all steam reviews are apparently Sony pony's buying and refunding the game on steam to shit on it. Didn't realise so many ponys played on PC to begin with.
Why can't people just accept it's not that great and it's been over sold by Todd and the shills, desperate for it to be a win. So this is what 9 billion bought you a game handicapped by creation engine. Most of the games problems come from this garbage.

Guys please can't Xbox just have this one big win, just once. How about you make a 10/10 game that's not inflated by shills and paid reviews. Instead of blaming another platforms fans of why this game, thats stuck in the past isn't Jesus that it was proclaimed to be.

In the grandeur of things you need to ask yourself if you really believe everything you just said? If you do you need to not take this so seriously.

I think I'm going to buy the game when it's at least half off. But let the record state that just because more people are not finding over this uncontrollably as if it's the second coming just means that there's plenty of room for Bethesda to improve. And if you yourself think this is a perfect 9 or 10 out of 10 then your standards are very very low. Games in general are reviewed way too softly and that's okay. A six or seven needs to be considered for purchase not judge like it's the end of the world.

This has gone far beyond playstation fanboys who are salty that they can't play the game. This has gone into what i would consider insanity of playstation fanboys that can't stop talking about the game in a negative light, and are doing everything in their power to create and continue the narrative that Microsoft does not have any stellar games.

Is the game with its issues, yes. But, these Sony fanboys you mention have leveled up to a level of mental sickness I never thought we would get to. It's not just twitter, it's invading here and all corners of the internet.

We have them buying a game on steam just to refund it and leave a negative review.

It's disturbing.
I had to read your comment twice because I wasn't sure if it's sarcasm or paranoia. Looks like it's just this:

Seriously guys, what is your personal loss if this game doesn't get the love you hoped it will get? People like different things. That's life. There's no need to make up a conspiracy in your head just because not everyone has the exact same thoughts as you.

This new narrative and talking point is starting to get a little Alex Jonesey

Apparently it's a vast Sony Playstation Conspiracy

I don't think there's that many doing it, just there was a thread on that there was some.

Most of the reviews will be legit, deffo. I was just shocked even a handful of people would do it.

That doesn't sound like a handful of people. So yeah, you need to backtrack on your previous posts and abandon this narrative entirely. It's simply absurd.

on FF16 review thread i voted 90-95 and the game ended as a 88 and my final score was a 7.5/10, i liked the game a lot, but i accepted that the game had major flaws and i was not getting paid to deffend SE.

DenchDeckard DenchDeckard its not that hard to accept that the game you love has flaws and the major public dont love it, just move on and dont cope with it, see, i like Starfield but the game has huge flaws and at the end of the day is a 7 - 8 at best.

OK, you're right. Looking back, I went too far with those comments. Maybe it was my own issue, in that to me...I just wanted an fallout 4 game in space. I wasn't apart of any narrative that starfield would be this game of forever, nothing would come close etc this weight that I guess some people on twitter or somewhere had put on the game.

I like Bethesda games a lot so it's delivering for me. Its a great game, no game is for everyone. So, apologies to the forum I'll delete that post it's wack and un needed.

Yep, possible one if my favorite games of all time is EUIV by Paradox. If someone trashed it (probably deservedly so) I wouldn't think it's a conspiracy.

Hell, I was negatively reviewing the thing on Steam when Paradox tried to pull some shenanigans. It's ok that people don't like the game you like, just enjoy yourself and don't worry about online talk.

What you should worry about is your modlist and how to get 200-300 mods going with minimal conflict with fairly raw mod tools! 😉

I don't get what people's issue is. The game is turning out to be exactly what I expected it to be. A Bethesda game that would score in the 80s. What we seem to have now is a bunch of zealots on either end of the fanboy spectrum. For every unscrupulous person saying the game is shit... There is at least one person saying its the best thing to happen since sliced bread or is some sort of once-in-a-generation achievement.

80s is a great score, and let's face it, for $10, This game is a bargain. Already sanj 20hrs into this and loving it. And after installing that DlSS mod? All I can say is that AMD needs to be ashamed of themselves.

It's interesting seeing some give it a thumbs down but will have put over 100 hours into the game.
I'm at 50 hours and am about to review with a thumbs down.

I mean I had 50 hours, but really it was more like 4 hours on a cycle doing the same thing over and over. I got the ship I wanted and then just nothing... I realised I didn't give a fuck about any of the companions, any of the factions or the main story. I was just following it along for the credits until I could get the ship of my dreams, and when I did I realised it felt empty and hollow... just like the same mining base I cleared for the 50th time from spacers.

FTFY, more Bethesda ambiguity.
No that's not what I am talking about.

I am talking about the difference between FSR and dlss. That shit is like night and day. And its even more obvious in a game that is a sponsored AMD title spearheading AMD tech. AMD needs to be ashamed of themselves. Whatever it is they need to do to compete with Nvidia at the very least on reconstruction, they need to do that shit immediately. Cause at this point, I am here wondering why anyone would buy an AMD GPU.

At least in my pov Bethesda really did a good job in almost every point they tackled with this game. It has a "good" shooting mechanic, the space combat is passable, the cities are big and well developed, the main characters didn't look like ass, the ship customization options is very interesting, the engine is robust, etc.

The problem is that all these points are connected not by you average open world experience, but with one of the shittiest UI of the last decade.

Oh I agree. I hope AMDs solution does improve like DLSS did. DLSS very early on was a blurrier imagine compared to now and native at the time as well.

The game does start to feel somewhat samey... but it's a Bethesda game. What did you expect? Sometimes I read what people said or were saying before this game released and was wondering if they knew a different Bethesda from the one I know.

A thought crossed my mind. Do you think a Rogue-like Survival mod could make this game awesome? You basically have to cross 10 points of interest on the galaxy map with your ship to reach a city. Each point you can choose a different path. Think FTL for those of you who played that game. Sometimes you get boarded and have to defend yourself. Sometimes you get into a dogfight. Sometimes you're forced to check out a base on a planet to rescue people, kill pirates, get fuel, etc. When you reach a city, that's your breather to shop around, stock up, etc. Then you rinse and repeat. If you die, you have to start a completely new run. The difficulty of the encounters you face is pretty RNG. Sometimes you get lucky and find some good gear, sometimes you're finding shit gear and encounters become more of a skill check. Just a few thoughts I had. I feel like I'd have more fun with that than what the game actually is.

Second lowest rated Bethesda game but look on the bright side at least it's above fallout 76.
Sounds like they learned from FO76 then. Now iirc there was a "never preorder" campaign following that game. I take it that campaign didn't stick lmao

Who really cares what the game is rated?

A feature of gamepass is you can just try it and see at no cost.

You see this thread title? It's about steam reviews, therefore it's about purchasers of the game (unless the review has a tag stating the person received the game for free).

I guess they bought it on Playstation:messenger_tears_of_joy: How does steam verify that the user even played the game if he bought it outside of Steam?

Still, the discourse around the game is hilarious.

Pathetic.

But there is another option, you can opt to educate yourself:

Right now in Steam:

Fallout. New Vegas - 95,2%
Skyrim - 93,9%
Oblivion - 93,8%
Morrowind - 93,1%
Fallout 4 - 81,9%
Fallout 3 - 78,5%
Starfield - 75,9%
Fallout 76 : 71,7%

Clearly something about the lower rated Bethesda games just hits for me, because I'm loving Starfield and before SF, the only other Bethesda title I liked was Fallout 3.

I'm sure there are plenty of people like you that keep hitting refresh on user reviews and live vicariously through them, but thank god I'm not one of them or I'd have no games to play and just be on NeoGAF 22 out of 24 hours of the day.
Yes it makes me rock hard. Btw thx for reminding to refresh that page. :messenger_weary::messenger_ok:

who cares what anyone thinks of it, if you love it - you love it. I'm playing it daily and it just keeps getting better. I don't understand how someone puts in more than say 10.. 20... 30.. 40+ hours then hates it?! If it was so average, why did you keep playing? Seems like you were enjoying it or something kept bringing you back. But whatever floats your boat

Basically the game was overhyped like no other. Xbox fanboys/shills were screaming ”GOTG”, Todd promised the moon and the sun in the palm of your hands. Xbox reps couldn’t hold themselves from telling everyone how Starfield is the best game that will be released for the series.

Simply put this is the reaction to all of that. Same old same old, over promise and under deliver. These companies never learn.

But that's kinda an Xbox thing though isn't it? The company and its fanbase always does that. So why does this surprise anyone?

I dont wanna accuse anyone, but I responded to a post recently about reviewing games on Game Pass. I have Game Pass.

You need to be a Game Pass subscriber to leave a review for a game on Game Pass if you dont own the game. Because you have access to actually play the game....

I hope no one thinks ppl are subscribing to Game Pass just to shit on the game. Instead of ya know...playing the game.

Some ppl just need to accept it. It is what it is.

More like so call gamers will never learn the lesson. Companies will continue to lie and overhype their games to sell them. They know they'll get free pass from dumb fanboys who idolized these "good guy" executives, and will believe and defend every single lie and BS they spit out

This question comes up. You'll see bad reviews with 1000+ hours. While there's a little bit of familiarity breeding contempt, most of those reviews are sincere if you read them. If you think about it, who could be more qualified to assess the game?

50 hours is minor in comparison and I bet most of us have experienced that souring. I've had soooooo many games that I am loving until I don't.

Nah I have to disagree ... 50 hours is actually a good chunk of time to put in a game especially if you're a working adult. I have a hard time thinking somebody can play a game for 50 hours and not like it. And I think your last sentence says it all ... you love it until you don't. If somebody puts 50 hours into a game odds are they are enjoying what they're playing. I loved Elite Dangerous for years until I became bored and then jaded and had to catch the negativity that was creeping in. Now I can say, yes I enjoyed the game and would recommend it to people, with the caveat that after a while it becomes "samey" and repetitive. But what game doesn't feel that way after X hours?

Wow. I can't take these numbers seriously, I clearly have very different taste than these guys.

Interesting that the score is starting to decrease. Played about 10 hours myself but don’t really have much desire to go back to it.

I might just mainline it alongside a couple of side quests. I’m really pretty disappointed in the game though. It feels very disjointed and there is absolutely no immersion.

Luckily, Cyberpunk update and expansion is around the corner. I’m hoping that isn’t a disappointment.

Yo if spiderman 2 gets a higher metacritic score than starfield? 😱

Some critics will genuinely get death threats
Huh? This platform war crap seriously needs to end. Those games have exactly nothing in common, there is zero reasons that they should be in any type of competition.

And it’s hilarious to think that Playstation fanboys who can play the game on PC would go play it on PC and rate it low on Steam because they think it’ll somehow make Playstation look better than Xbox. That’s dumb. Can’t see that happening in any bigger scale. Too dumb even for platform warriors.

On a serious note, I think people need to stop talking about Starfield like it’s a Xbox exclusive. It’s not. It’s on PC, day 1, and it’s better on PC and everybody here with any type of PC capable of running it should play it on PC. Unless you plan to play it on your console too then why even bother thinking about the Xbox version? Just play the game on your PC and be happy about it. It’s a great version on Steam. 50+ hours played. Zero crashes. Great mod support already.

Regarding the dropping numbers, it’s not hard at all to find scenarios where people going in won’t feel like they got the game they thought they would get. The PR left lots of things unsaid. And the hype was crazy, still is.

I thought I would get No Man’s Sky RPG. I didn’t get that. Fortunately I got something else that I still love so for me it ended on 9+ instead of 7. But I can easily see that someone else going in with similar thoughts fall out of it rather than fall in love in it as the game and story ramps up. Is it Mass Effect with more things to do or No Man’s Sky with less things to do? A glass half-full or half-empty scenario.

Plus, it’s a demanding game, how would you rate a PC game where you’re forced to play in lower settings or even 30 or 40fps? I can imagine such a scenario won’t end with a thumbs up for everyone.

For me it’s like a beefier Mass Effect with more gameplay mechanics and I play it on a 4090 PC so Ultra visuals and no framerate issues. Definitely a 👍 here and by now I know I’ll have it high on my GOTY list. But it’s not above Zelda TOTK, yet.

How is it dropping so fast
People who paid extra were already kind of sold on the BGS formula and the marketing so they were more likely to like it. Hence, the front-loaded positive reviews that had a lead of ~5 days.

When the game opened up to everyone else (non-premium users) who didn't like the BGS formula enough to pay the premium price for early access, the score started to drop. Because these people might be expecting a game that is more in line with the 2023 AAA standard: visuals, controls, 60 FPS, production value, etc. Hence, the gradual decrease in overall review score.

I feel like this is the best possible outcome for neogaf. [I have played neither game]
