doomposting and wishposting in a single post, where can I get this power?
Yeah, they definitely payed 80 billion USD to shut down COD and close the studios.

what if the 10 years deal that sony signed is only for updating old games
I doubt it, sounds like a worthless contract as most devs release patch/dlc for games even after acquistion. e.g. bethesda

It will probably be something generic like any call of duty games in whatever form(free to play, or buy to play) will be on playstation console for 10 years.

Really hope so. Their launcher is annoying. Just do Warzone with all Multiplayer content as a single app, and occasionally release a singleplayer standalone without all the bloat.

You haven't played Infinite Warfare's campaign? It's easily one of the best single player story campaigns in recent years, and not just for CoD standards either.
Nah, the last COD i really played was MW3.

I think I own BO2, but never really played it.

The scale that A-B has been operating at with this franchise is something that nobody else has even come close to in this industry. I mean, in a world where say Microsoft needed six years to release a new Forza, they've been releasing a new COD which has a budget of at least $150M-$200M every year. Basically every damn studio they own is working on this operation. I also don't necessarily think it is sustainable anymore, Vanguard was shit, MW2 was shit, etc. Meanwhile Warzone is making tons of money and doesn't need that effort.
Yeah the standalone releases still make a lot of money, but that won't continue to be the case if they can't meet basic quality expectations.

Move it to every 2-3 years, protect the brand, and free up some of those studios to work on other IP that have gotten neglected.

No.....a big earner was also selling the game for $60-$70. It would sell around 15 million units PER YEAR! MS would be insane to just get rid of COD like this.

They can still do that in the form of battle passes and just eliminate the campaign. They're going to lose sales anyway with the game going to Gamepass. Also, this is Microsoft we're talking about. They've made lot of "insane" decisions that make people scratch their heads.

I think slowing the train down puts the brand at risk personally. On a 2-3 year cycle, a single poor reception could turn a game that charts at the top year over year, to a game without much positive word of mouth for 4-6 years. Game over if that happens.

Agreed, at this point CoD has to remain a yearly francize, or worst case a bi-annual one, if you put 3 years in between them...well...look at Battlefield V and 2042, that francise is in the trashcan now, from a period between 3 and 4 where they were getting super close to CoD in terms of numbers and popularity.

Ok but they have at least 7 studios working on a title every year. What is the best COD/campaign in your opinion?

I'm guessing if an era truly ends, it will end up being just the current storyline before they start with something new. Just don't see why they would consider major changes with the numbers they pull each year.

The status quo is unsustainable, and every other annualized brand has either realized that or suffering dramatically.

Ubisoft pivoted Assassin's Creed amd some of their other frnachises to a slower cadence very effectively, and people scarecely even noticed, other than the games getting bigger and reviewing better.

Meanwhile the hangers-on like Madden are suffering devestating reviews year after year and gradually declining in relevance.

As an aside, imagine if the people that work on these campaigns actually got a 4-5 year dev cycle to put out something really special. The talent is there, and I'm not a big MP guy so it's hard for me to justify $70 just get a few grins for a 3-5 hour campaign.

But games like FIFA, Madden, NBA 2K, and MLB The Show still sell great literally every year.

You can't look at the success of the modern Zelda games + Elden Ring and think Activision isn't going..."We can sell 40+ million copies instead of 20 if we just do that one thing.

End of single player campaigns confirmed.

That would mean the end of the series for me. Not buying it without a SP campaign.

Sounds about right for MS. Dog brain decision after dog brain decision.

They are going to fuck this franchise harder than Activision ever did.

First they'll kill off the SP campaign, then they'll port it to every single platform imaginable - Downgrading the fuck out of it for weak ass platforms like Switch.

Enjoy
Yep, that's primarily the only reason I ever buy them. Despite jumping up and down in quality over the years they usually manage to deliver some awesome first person animations, if you're into that sorta thing and can definitely give you some fun especially when bought at a discount.

All I have to say is thank God they peaked with Infinite Warfare's campaign as it's as close to a masterpiece as they'll ever get after CoD 4 and World at War.

GamePass Effect . . . /s . . . kinda.

Seriously though, I call BS. You don’t willingly stop selling millions of something for $70.
Honestly at this point that needs to stop, even I stopped playing the campaigns after ghost. I heard that the ones for MW, Blops and MWII were good but I honestly just never bothered.

Even if they quit doing campaigns. They'd still sell millions of a game at $70/year. Why would you ever give that up? You'd need to be a damn sure about your whales going GaaS to give up that much money a year.

Makes sense why MS probably updates the matchmaking on every COD to work

If Call of Duty just becomes a multiplayer client that functions as a sort of Master Chief Collection with all of the content from the series in 4K... i'd be absolutely okay with that development.

Sonys more concerned about those whales than anything else. That should tell you why they fought so hard

That makes sense to me. They could still do major yearly updates and sell a shit ton of DLC without having to waste time and money making a brand new game every year.

Sony: "We want MS to keep releasing every new COD on PlayStation"
MS: "Okay yeah for sure, we'll release every new COD on Playstation"
