FINAL FANTASY XVI | Prologue DEMO

Dr. Claus

Vincit qui se vincit
Lil_Bambino98 on youtube I uploaded the hour (processing) or you can check my psn, I have no need to lie. Literally, when fighting the swamp monster I dropped to 20fps. the story is a typical pseudo-fantasy world where only the lightest-skinned people exist and have to fight against evil because the character is supposed to be some pseudo-Lord.

So you are a racist. Got it. Era is the other way, mate.

I do get the feeling that the one on one fights are going to get as insane on Hard/Final Fantasy mode as say the Organization 13 optional fights in KH3/2
I believe I can pretty much guess which parts of the game KH and platinum teams worked on.

Platinum must have worked on the Eikon battles. KH team must have worked on the hunts and/or one on one battles.

“It’ll get at least a 83 meta”

“I’ll buy it…but only at a deep discount”

Trying too hard my man. This is a final fantasy game through and through. It’s okay for them to reinvent themselves
You're reading a bit too much into it mate.

This is not a FF game, but just as you thinking it is is your own opinion, so mine is about thinking what this game is. Sales will be what determines the franchises future.

Hah, now I get it.

Yeah and I have a feeling sales are going to surge in a massive way.

This game oozes high quality and is right up the western market’s alley.
FF 7 Remake also did(87 on metacritic), and the last time we got a sales update was in 2020, it doing 5 million units. Should be around 7 million now, but its probably not the bombastic sales Square expected.

I expect something similar for this game. But only time will tell.

This game is a lock for a 90+ meta, and I think it could settle at 92 or higher.

It’s far more appealing to western demographic tastes these days than ff7 remake.

Only thing holding it back is it’s ps5 exclusive, but you can tell they took a lot of time making this a fantastic production for next gen

Okay, finished the demo and here are my final thoughts on it:

Visuals are nice - the game looks good overall. I played on graphics mode and encountered no real problems until the panzer dragoon portion at the end - there was some serious frame drops that even I noticed and I don't much care for frame rate, it was a bit jarring. I was surprised this was happening, I feel like the Ps5 should have been capable of what was on screen (two characters, some random pillars/infrastructure and generic abyss elsewise). But in general I like the animations, visual design, etc. It looks pretty good.

Plot seems interesting enough, the rogue element was a little heavy on the telegraphing I think, but fine and interested to see where things go from here.

Combat is OK. I strongly prefer FF VII remake combat best I can tell at the moment. I don't like that there is no resource consumption for magical attacks and instead we have summon-based cooldown abilities to swap around through. It isn't the end of the world and maybe it'll turn out just fine. I only peeked lightly into the battle aspect of the demo because I didn't want to jump far ahead in the plot, but I did a few battles and got my mind wrapped around it. I didn't find any of the encounters in the main portion of the demo to be challenging at all, it seems very easy to dodge or be out of the way of enemy attacks when they come and the repetition of just slowly chugging away at the stagger bar to do damage is a little boring, but I'm sure as the game goes on I'll have other abilities that make stagger easier to achieve depending on the enemy you are fighting, so I'm really not worried about that in the long run, just for the demo purposes it was a bit bland and unchallenging. As I've said before, FF is not known for difficulty, so I can't really hold it against it. I like potions being limited, but I didn't really have to use a potion the whole time, so I'm not sure how much value that adds to the strategy - I'm sure it will be more important later, but for the demo it's a non factor. Kills desire to explore what little there is to explore when you just find another potion that's automatically consumed because you already have too many. I worry strongly there will be very little exploration going on in the full game.

I don't really see the point of the big Eikon setpiece battles though - I think these would have been better left to cutscenes. Pressing triangle for 5 minutes while occasionally dodging did absolutely nothing for me and it wasn't even much of a visual spectacle as half was down a repetitive tunnel and the other was in a non-descript area of columns. I could do without it but I'm sure there will be some interesting happenings with it at certain points in the game that are cool.

I'm not excited about just clicking points on a map and going to those zones, I'd at least like something along the lines of FF X where there are zones between major areas, but I'm sure this will be better than it seems in the full game.

I really like the musical score quite a lot - hoping that it continues to be pretty excellent.

Overall I still want to play it, but not as hype as I had hoped for me personally.
I'm with you on the exploration. If they don't have the ability to walk between zones(I somehow doubt there will be), I'd at least like there to be a very large area like the calm lands to explore.

I also agree with the Eikon battle. I'm glad they will all be different because, yeah, it wasn't exactly thrilling. I feel like there should have been more variety to that one. They did say each will have a different theme and, you're right, this one was very much inspired by Panzer Dragoon.

100% on the music. Soken doesn't miss

Eh, wouldn't hold my breath for that Meta.

But more than that, this IS a more western centric game. Which means that the west will have to make up for any lost sales in Asia, especially Japan. Which I'm guessing will be considerable. Japan alone used to be responsible for anywhere to 1 to 2 million of any FF game, and I believe that it will be a fraction of that for XVI.

Alright I just finished the demo, and I gotta say the combat is actually pretty deep - you chain together so much shit, it’s awesome.

If I could describe my thoughts in a scentence:

The true successor to God of War 3 has finally arrived

Man I totally agree

The epic set pieces are back baby! And it’s fucking awesome!!

Never thought I’d say that about a FF game but the cutscenes in this and the way it weaves into the game are incredible and mostly real time too. Very impressed that they outdid Sony Santa Monica

I'm torn....Love the music, I like where the story is going....

BUT

I hate the combat, I had no issues in the demo, I just don't find tanky as fuck enemies and the boring ol' dodge/parry/counter system what I personally want from a FF game. It has all the elements of a FF game...but it doesn't feel like it. I'm sure it's just my age and that I still love turn based RPGs and couldn't care less about "action/rpg" games. I personally have no issue waiting for a deep sale on this one, but if my wife wants it I guess we grab it. Hopefully Diablo IV keeps her busy enough that we can save on the first sale that comes about.

I played on PS5 in Graphics mode...and it felt off at times. Some of the motion blur was bad in the city areas, and I had multiple instances of...slowdown? or choppy-ness (not sure the word I'm looking for here) during the Eikon battle at the end of the demo, wonder if others had similar issues.

Performance is ass, resolution is all over the place, textures is ass, story is not drawing my attention, didn’t enjoy and won’t be buying

You found the enemies tanky? Did you play the second part of the demo with more abilities? because I found it to be the complete opposite - enemies were melting left and right (except for the bosses and harder ones)

It's impossible to predict what Japanese sales will be for this game. Launch week sales for XIII on PS3 were around 1.5 million, while XV and VII Remake were around 700k on PS4. XVI is launching in the shadow of Zelda as well. I think anything over 500k first week sales in Japan would be considered a success.

What time is it?
More impressions:

-Visuals are really nice even if the initial environments use a muted color palette
-I'm enjoying the voice cast and how the characters are being developed.
-QTEs for opening doors or kicking down barriers feels really outdated.
-Combat feels fine but the Goblin bosses felt spongy. Maybe I just suck at the combat but dodge to avoid attacks, use Phoenix ability to close the gap and hit hard and then use your special ability once the meter feels. Both fights felt twice as long as they needed to be. *fake edit* 3rd boss fight is much the same.
-Environments feel static. It feels like you should be able to smash those old barrels and crates in the goblin village but nope.
-Now I'm playing a bad version of Panzer Dragoon Orta. All sizzle no steak.
-The setup for story definitely got its' hooks into me.

I'm more interested than I was but I might try easy mode to see if the boss battles are less dragged out.

Combat is fun, but GOTY based off the first part I played? Yikes. It’s pretty linear/straightforward so far. The troll fight looked cool. Parrying will take some getting use to. I bet it’ll be good. It has a solid feeling to it and that first bit was neat. I’m sure it’ll open up. The first combat zones are very limited and it’s not doing anything new yet.

I did not expect this game to look this damn good. Music is incredible. Combat is really fucking tight.

My biggest gripe: I am not a fan of how light the traversal feels. I know he’s meant to be agile and it works while in combat. I just wish outside of it it was a tad bit heavier.

XVI is currently at 88 point in COMG(If you don't know what it is, its a pre order site of a chain of stores in Japan for games. Usually games do anywhere from x1000 to x1500 times the points it has at launch week), which seem to suggest that XVI might not even break 200k physically in the first week.

So yeah, the west will really need to make up for it.

That could explain it, I was not aware there was a second part of the demo :messenger_tears_of_joy: I finished the first part and called it after getting the "you're done" screen. Good to see that it isn't all like that, cause the Goblin heavy and Marlboro was just testing my patience of how long I want to sit in a single encounter doing the same thing over and over again.

Not really an opinion when it's as biased as yours.

Wanna run a poll on how many people in this forum already knew where you would stand on this game? No matter how it turns out? I mean... 70% of your criticism the demo thread, about the demo, was made before you even played the demo...

And damn.... some of the criticisms you have... makes me wonder why you ven come into FF16 threads.

First impressions: this game is gonna be a classic

I was someone who wasnt sold on the graphics, but fuck me, this is a next gen game. To think that everything that you are seeing is running in real time, even huge battles with multiple NPCs with different animations + eikons battling on top of everyone is insane.

Lighting in particular is impressive. Everything looks so consistent. And shout out to the PBR in the gold materials, it looks just like the real thing.

Performance is rough tho. I'm playing in performance mode, and I'm pretty sure that it dips to 30's while just walking around.

It also looks really, really blurry unfortunately. Probably due to a bad TAA implementation, but I've seen 1080p games looking sharper.

Gameplay is excellent. Havent been able to play a lot, 'cause I'm going to work now, and I've just played the combat tutorial, but it controls like a dream.

And even at 30 FPS (Quality mode) controls are snapy. Way better than many 30 fps games. Like a Souls game on consoles, but with Vsync enabled. Dont know how they did it.

I'm way more hyped for the game now. This one will be special.
I couldn't really get into Performance mode since it constantly struggled to keep 60FPS. Quality mode at locked 30 FPS felt perfectly fine once I got used to it, though.

Glad I preordered this. The music, graphics, and gameplay took me back to a time when I felt less jaded about games. And I'm genuinely interested to see where the story goes. I planned to get to sleep early tonight, but that shit didn't happen, lol

Initially I thought it would be great to have a normal attack button and a strong attack, but after playing the challenge portion of the demo with the Eikonic abilities I see why they didn’t. In addition to the basic abilities, there’s 2 cooldown specials for each of the 3 Eikons available in the demo and there’s a bunch more to unlock and upgrade via the skill tree. Then there’s variations like the Titan’s specials that you hold and time a meter for maximum damage. Hits like a ton of bricks during a stagger. The shield block is cool, too. Especially against those fire stream attacks it will stack like 5 blocks in a row.

I just wish this game were also not Pure fantasy, why wouldn't I want more of what I prefer?
I'm not telling others how to feel.
We haven’t got SP only FF with pure fantasy setting for a long time now we getting one, variety is a good thing so I don’t see the problem here.

I was pretty excited for this, but man did it leave me underwhelmed. Everything is just so brown and grey, and already feels incredibly linear. The graphics are great in moments, but at times look just on par with 15. Probably gonna wait for a sale now.

I looked and failed to find the option. I was hoping there'd be something in the menu options

yeah... and it gets worse every time the framerate drops. at 50 to 60 fps it's OK-ish, but the game often drops below that and then it's giving me Matrix Awakens flashbacks.

Hearing the castle area is pretty bad so we shall see how it goes

yeah, the castle is like 60fps one second, and then you turn the camera and it's below 48... at which point VRR gives up of course.
on that note, when will Sony finally implement a "force 120hz" option? that's also something that would help this game, and many others like Elden Ring, play and feel a lot better.
