High on LIfe Steam sales skyrocket alongside PC Game Pass success

I think the critic reviews underrated this game.

I also think that games that score less than 90% can still be enjoyed.

I've played to the second bounty and if I found the comedy annoying, I'd have stopped by now. As I don't mind it, it's an ok game.

It's not amazing, but It's character makes it stand out as being different, and for me, that's a big plus. I'm not surprised it's got some buzz about it.

Totally agree, why do we have to have a 95+ megahit to be considered a good game? That's an outstandingly special game, a good game can be any score for anybody. I've played games that are 4-5s and enjoyed my time with them plenty, conversely, I've played supposed "10" games and hated them. I'm looking at you BotW, just not for me.

Cult classics are a thing in movies for a reason. Gaming needs its b-side where some magic and room away from stifling and cookie cutter AAA shit resides.

I have really been loving it. But I'm also a fan of Rick and Morty and even enjoyed Trover on my Quest 2. It's also a great looking game and has a lot of moments where you can kind of break normal game tropes. I don't know, I like it a lot.

What is wrong with that?
Do you think people born with knowledge like this?

Funny thing is retail workers have a shitload of knowledge, if they give a shit. You deal with so many repeat issues and weird one offs that the longer you stay in retail the more experiences in many facets of the industry you gain. Same goes with exposure to brands, products, services etc. I'll take real world job experience over a book worm every time, we're not building space stations.

I once hired a guy with MCSE+inet and two Novell certs who on his second day we offered a 35% reduction in his salary, due to training for months required post hire, or he could part ways within 2 weeks. The guy studied and got certified for years but could not build a single PC in front of us, let alone to assembly line standards for hundreds of PCs in a week. We called back a previous interviewee who was a retail backroom tech and had him run our PC assembly warehouse within 2 years to great success.

I can't imagine spending the full $60 on this game. It's not a BAD game per se (6ish metacritic is accurate), but even the best jokes in the world can't hide that the core gameplay (shooting) is just so fucking bland. I'm like 60% through and have no desire to continue.

It's the sophomoric humour.

I'm surprised they didn't bundle it with a free copy of American Pie and Super Troopers.
The game just feels like a fun goofy late 90's early 2000's fps (like duke nukem or shadow warrior).

It is defiantly toilet humor and I personally love it. I was laughing in the first 8 minutes of the game. The throwback fps tutorial was fantastic.

Much like south park or rick and morty....it isn't for everyone.....but it sure is for males age 14 to 50 imo ;)

I'll have to give it a shot. Adding it to my very long "I need to give this a try" list. Quite impressive that it jumped out in front of Apex and Overwatch.

I'm pretty early on as I'm using it for AMEM and I can look past the humor which I absolutely loath, but nothing really stands out mechanically.

The humor is what a lot of the reviewers dinged it on. I find myself chuckling quite a bit myself, but I can see how it wouldn't be other people's cup of tea.

To be fair, humor is a big selling point for the game and it is very in-your-face. Definitely not my cup and that's not snobbery as I like plenty of dumb shit. It takes a lot for a first person shooter to impress me and granted, I just got my second gun but the combat, enemies and AI are all ho-hum. The most interesting thing has been the boss encounters but they can't save the feeling that this is more of a chore to play than fun. I'm not sure I'll play much more.

The only time I gave half a shit about Metacritic was when somebody made a bet about eating their own cum if Pentiment got over 90.

I’d say its a low to mid 80s game, with a generous curve taken into account if you know how to enjoy the humor,

I'm no big Rick and Morty fan beyond just watching it once and having fun with it. I got some good laughs out of that and it's basically this game. Some of the jokes fell flat but there are also some real good laughs in there.

It's a solid 7-8 if you like the humor. If you find reaction GIFs funnier then you may want to look elsewhere though.

It really is a lot of fun. No gun is the same and offers variety unlike every fps where you get an assault rifle/shotgun/pistol/rpg. The platforming is great too. Then there's a bunch of subtle video game references to catch. The last game I played that was just as humorous was Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard.

I think the scores make perfect sense. It's a good shooter, feels like almost a copy of Halo mechanically. Hell, even that autmatic gun is almost a carbon copy of the needler.

But that's fine, wjat bothers me is the jit or miss humor that often is just really annoying. My god that flying alien talking your ear off. I had to turn the game off because I couldn't think,it was so annoying.

And the music outside of battles is really chill and cool, but then turns into this nightmare of annoying sounds when battles hit. I've got sensitive hearing, so I might react harsher than most, but I can't remember a game that's pummeled my ears more than this one.

The audio is exhausting.

So yeah, good and bad stuff that ends up putting the game somewhere around 60.
Did you try changing the setting so that characters/guns talk less? I was mad surprised when the tip for it popped up 😂

This game is becoming a big hit, we have to see if it sustains long-term but so far it's looking to be around for some time.

If anything this also shows that Game Pass doesn't hurt or impact sales as much as people have been speculating. Looking at the chart it's beaten out a bunch of general audience f2p games, and even an on sale sports game.
This is the 'most played' list, right? It does not indicate game sales, so how did you come to this conclusion? Genuinely curious.

This is why assigning number scores to games often misses the point. High on Life is not an exceptionally polished or ambitious game. In fact it's a bit jank and retro. But it has a ton of personality, a sense of humor, a great world, and a satisfying loop. If I was trying to be objective it's like a 7/10, but there is no objective measure of quality and the fact is I loved it.

Good for the devs, the game is pretty darn great!

I don’t think they’ll have to worry much about the low review scores, a game like this is all about word of mouth.

Played it for a couple hours. Big R&M fan but the humor here is just... okay? LIke 1 out of every 5-10 jokes are clever or funny. Not great. The knife is pure edgelord humor, groan. *rim shot*

The shooting is also just... okay?

60 may be a little low. Maybe a 70 for me right now. But not sure I'll keep playing honestly. Too many other games are more interesting.

Who would have thought, a new game releases on Xbox and lots of gamers starved for content play it.

It's alright. Critic reviews are maybe a bit on the low side, but it's definitely a ~70 game. Hopefully next time they spend more time making the gameplay as polished as all the dialogue.

Thag doesn't mean that High on Life is on fhe most played charts because of paid players. In fact, the majority/supermajority are coming from Gamepass. That's not an achievement on Xbox being the only new game with practically zero competition this week.

This is such an ignorant take, because we’ve had many many games launch on GP without rocketing to these levels of engagement. Not even A Plague’s Tale reached these heights.

It’s a very impressive feat to beat out some of the F2P monsters in engagement levels.

A 61 Metacritic game. Rough year.

Sour grapes, eh? 😂

Not surprising, everywhere you go the player feedback about it is excellent. It’s a great game, only flaw being enemy variety.

Thank you Stadia for tapping out and giving this game a chance to shine.

It's a early 2000's game in a a 2022 coat of paint.

First impressions for me were rough because they were pre-day 1 patch, but now that the game works it's pretty awesome fun.

There's no real challenge, it has super fun boss fights.

It's a rarity in games these days that are too afraid to take chances, or return to a great form of fun gaming.

Eh. Aside from the fact that most new AA games don’t hit these heights on GP, it would most likely have gotten the exact same popularity spike on PS5.

As someone who plays games mostly on PS5, I can say with certainty that it's extremely unlikely.

Coming from GOW Ragnarok, High On Life -- a game with sooo many issues and such low scores -- just wouldn't sit well with the PS community. This is also evident by the fact that literally no one is asking if it's a timed exclusive / if and when it's coming to PS because they want to play it, etc. There's just enough to chatter to indicate any interest in this.

Also, if it comes to AA games, PS would have access to Neon White, The Forest Quartet, Sky: Children of Light, etc. all of which have scored higher than High on Life.
