The top image is how it looked on my TV. The bottom image is what I'm guessing ya'll were seeing? Edit: obviously ignoring compression.
I was seeing the bottom, but it was a bit lighter, I am assuming due to HDR. Color grading was more like the bottom.

Pretty close. LG C1. I remember people complaining about The Long Night too, but it was fine on my aging Panasonic plasma I had at the time. I mean it was dark, but that was at least more tolerable if you're going for "dark and full of terrors."

This episode was so dark that for a solid minute or so I was wondering if Aemond had seen Daemon and Rhaenyra at first and was running back to tattle on them because it was hard to know where the fuck he was in relation to them, until it became clear he was just sneaking up on Vhagar

Interesting. Mine was bright exactly like the top image - I could see literally everything. My TV doesn't have HDR though. That's why when I saw the complaints online I was super confused.

I would also echo the sentiments about this episode looking too dark and muddy. Outside of a few scenes, this was probably the least visually appealing episode so far imo.
It seems they were overcompensating the grading due to shooting day-for-night.

Not feeling the actor changes at all. Telling me they couldn’t use makeup or CGI with the original cast…horseshit. Also not enough hemophiliacs in this show.

I turned HDR off and it is brighter for sure but still pretty fugly nonetheless.
I am a couple episodes in on Terminal List and feel it look awful as well.
HDR has been a real mixed bag for me. I have enjoyed it much more in gaming than in movies and TV - yet Andor looks incredible!

Yeah if you have been watching any of the behind the scenes episodes that HBO has put out on YouTube you will notice a trend that the vast majority of the "night" scenes are actually shot during the day and then artificially darkened after the fact. They even said in other interviews that they scale up the lighting based on the number of torches, candles, chandeliers, etc etc that are present in order to give a more realistic lighting to the sets. So it feels like they intentionally made it dark as all hell in order to compensate for the fact that there are no torches or anything around and they are only going off of the light of the Moon.

That does not mean that I am defending the choice by any stretch of the imagination though because I had to raise the brightness on my TV by several magnitudes just to see what the fuck was going on during those scenes. And I was watching it in my damn near windowless living room at night. I can only imagine how rough that was for people who are trying to watch it in a lit living room or at a third party location.
Night scenes have been done this way for ages. This show i just really bad at it for some reason. There's no contrast, so no highlights, and it all just turns into this grey mush. Sure, that's what real life can be in the middle of the night, but this isn't real life. I'd like to see what's going on.

It's a HDR problem. It makes dark bits darker and light bits lighter (generally using contrast to 'trick' our eyes). That does mean it needs to be well colour graded though.

I also watched it in SDR and had no problems seeing anything.

It's a post processing problem. Film the shows proper with no excessiveness that screws up standards. Or when you do, test your highest caliber IQ (4K/HDR/etc). Hopefully it will just be that one off episode.

The Expanse is another visual treat in HDR. All the ship/instrument lights, etc..

I thought Dolby Vision was supposed to basically auto calibrate to the intended brightness levels? Though that seems like a pipe dream given the variety of lighting conditions and TVs supposed to support it. My TV is downstairs where the only windows are almost blacked out by the shades during the day, and I almost always watch things at night anyway, and I could hardly see WTF was happening. I imagine anyone with other lighting conditions was totally lost.

Umm, I said it needs to be colour graded properly
.

And yes, that still is a HDR problem, as the SDR version was fine and the special colour grading is needed for the HDR version.

I think we are both agreeing on the same thing, I meant it’s not an HDR issue, but what editing decided to do or fail to do with HDR.

there is a tendency to judge more lenient when it is something that you like so maybe this is the case here but the darkness of the episode felt novel to me. It kind of gave it a reality of how dark shit is at night reminded me the times I went camping and could barely see anything unlike hollywood magic night time scenes where the lighting is perfect. Though it is also an illusion since I hear these were shot in daylight then artificially darkened.

Binged all 7 episodes. It’s good. Excellent visuals and music. Love the politics. Some of the writing and choices tho are meh. I like the dagger being a common theme between the two shows.

That was until Alicent in the latest episode, Team Black rn. Need more Daemon tbh.
lol why? She wasnt really wrong. Her son lost an eye. Broken noses heal.

Not that I am team green. I just understood her frustration in that scene especially with Viserys turning a blind eye to every single fucking abhorrent thing his daughter does. And she has a rap sheet worse than Cersei's.

Alicent from the very beginning was placed there by her snake in the grass "Littlefinger" father.

This is why it's so difficult to pick a side, even though I will be Team Daemon for now. At least he stays true to himself. The laughing at the funeral was perfection, lol.

Her son attacked the eventual heir to the throne with a rock. She is just a Queen consort and thought she could overrule the King in public and chatted mad shit about the heir to the throne too. Personally I think my boi Viserys should have flogged her.

The show is too fucking dark. 1 nit scenes 🤣

this is absolutely ridiculous lol. what were they thinking?

The director is actually very talented. He's directed Hardhome, Battle of the Bastards, The Cersei Septor episode, Long Night episode and of course the explosive assault on Kings Landing episode. This episode was actually amazing otherwise. Not sure how they couldve released it in such state.

P.S I constantly paused the show to pull up the menu and the brightness didnt kick back in. I have an LG CX.

I loved this episode, especially Viserys, Aemond and Vaemond, to some extent. I think this is the strongest episode IMO before the penultimate episode.
Poor chap vaemond. They changed a tiny bit of details but no matter. No one is innocent.

Press F to Viserys, a good father & husband but a weak king.

Seeing Viserys so feeble nearly broke my heart. He was often naive but the man just wanted to see his family come together and be happy. I can't fault him for that.
Also the scene with him being supported by Daemon was rather emotional.

Vaemond had no chill and it cost him his head, fucking hell.
House Velaryon just can't seem to catch a break.

I can already tell Punished Aemond looks like he will be a scene stealer in future episodes.

This was the calm before the storm. Viserys was last thing holding it all from falling apart and now he's gone.

Despite the break neck pacing, the performance of the actors do a great job of depicting the strained and frustrating relationships between these characters. Feels like they've known each other for decades.

The only thing that's confusing is that Aemond looks way older than everyone else. Sure people grow at different rates but still.
