Microsoft Flight Simulator is the #1 game that will drive your house guests goo goo "the graphics are like real life"

The bear of bad news
So I had some buddies over on the weekend for a bbq and was showing off some of my new tech, okay.

Out of all my best looking games, MS Flight Sim seemed to get the most reaction because "the graphics look like real life".

They didn't seem to care that it's kind of like Google Earth or the textures look like crap up close. Everyone just wanted to know if I could fly over their house.

But can you? Fly over their house? Or only certain areas?

Edit: just watched a video from someone flying over my hometown. Holy moly!
Think of anywhere you want in the world and you can fly over it. Now though there are some limitations because they are using some older Microsoft maps like for example where I live they build a complex down by the water about 4 years ago but in Microsoft flight simulator it's still not in the game yet.

It's a great looking game, but it's overlooked because you fly and you.... Do nothing else.

So many people don't consider it for graphics awards or brought up in many graphical comparison videos by analysts. Even on Series X it looks great but people just don't care other than maybe playing it for a day or two and moving on. Suck really.

Series has been around since the 80's and was always more about the experience than the game.

I can fly over my house?! 😲

I flew over my house and realized that my city made no sense, it was just AI generated nonsense.

I'm not into flight simulators but I liked the game, it's actually my favorite MS game in a long time.

I've been using OKCupid a bit lately, and I just got a date with a really cute girl lined up. We've sent several messages back and forth and chatted over the phone once.
So on Friday we´re going to a bar in the neighborhood. She said she wants to see the puppy I have in one of my profile pics (I got a puppy like two months ago), so we´re going to come back to my apartment after the bar.
While I have her there, it´s probably the perfect opportunity to show her how far gaming has come since Super Mario World. What would be a good game for this?

Next have them try it in VR with a HOTAS. Even on my RX 570 it looks amazing even with all the compromises I have to make to get it to run at like 20 FPS. I'll be getting a new GPU mainly for this game.

But did you demonstrate that? Did you go up close enough? Because why would you do that if your intention was to impress them by showing off your tech as you say?

who tf shows their house guests a flight sim, that shit is so boring to even normal people lol

Show them something more cinematic
That's ridiculous. I had the same thing happen at my house, various family and guests wanting me to fly over their houses. Then we would goto parts of the world they had visited and guests were laughing and pointing out things like "oh my god, that's the road we walked up that will lead to that stream going under the bridge....OH MY LOOK THERE IT IS, there's the bridge"

It blew their minds. You've obviously not witnessed it.

Where do you live, that's not accurate? That's weird. Even my shitty little town in the UK is like 95 percent perfect. Then they did the UK update and its even better.

Yeah people really dont think before they speak. I dont think i would be lying if i said i have put over 200 hours into Flight Sim. And all i do is give myself unlimited fuel, put everything to basic settings, pick a plane, and explore the world.
I mean Christ people spend hours on Google Earth, well this is like Google Earth next level lol.

In 20 years time they will be able to do mega detail up close. Then we have pretty much defeated graphics!

It's amazing at what it does, but saying a game that has no characters, animations, and any interaction with the world has "defeated graphics" is pretty wild.

I plan to show this game to my dad when I upgrade my rig. His last experience with gaming was playing Ninja Gaiden on the NES with me back in 1990 when I was just a little kid. It's going to blow his mind.

Brazil. Everything is AI generated, trying to guess what it was supposed to look like but getting it wrong.

Even Rio de Janeiro, that they highlight, looks pretty weird if you get close enough to tell things apart (at least the last time I checked it).

World is actually generated from Bing mapsa data (which takes data from Open Streets Map). If no one in Brazil input correct information (including building types and their height) in OSM then it will look wrong.

I don't know how it created it just looks nothing like the real thing. In my city (Belo Horizonte) they even replaced the football stadium with a random building and pretty much every asset the AI used to guess what things should look like is wrong.

When I heard that you could fly and see your house that's the first thing I did, turns out my entire neighborhood looks nothing like it should, it's just a bunch of random houses, far worse than Google maps.

There is a planned World Update for Brazil for 2022

1. i don't have any friends to invite to my house and if i did i wouldn't be showing off video games to them. that might scare them away.
2. i tried flying over my house in FS and it was using basic ass models and it didn't even look like my house. i know the layout of my city but despite that i had to look for my house far too long. edit: and i'm in one most populated cities in the UK which got an update but apparently UK only means England.

Like all the graphically impressive games it really just depends what and how you show it, there are some pretty ugly Textures in FS when you get up close.

it's like some of the vegetation off screen in TLOUp2 or many AssCreed environments.

That's sad to hear. Hopefully they update it ASAP.

Then you have the satellite imagery turned off or your internet is to slow. It should look like your house from above, because unless your house was built in the last couple of years it is a real image of your house overlayed on a 3D model of what the AI thinks your house should look like. It struggles with really tall buildings because the images are from a satellite looking down and things like cranes but for regular housing it does a very good job.

There are some areas where they don't get the location right and the AI just adds a generic house or building.

Why not go full cinematic? A movie is way more impressive than a game that pretends to be a movie!

It's probably the best looking game on Series X and on a strong PC capable of RT it's up there with a full-fat RDR2 or Cyberpunk 2077 experience visually.

But just sticking to consoles, it's definitely one of the best looking games currently out. I would personally put HFW and R&C Rift Apart above it, given IMO it's harder to make more fantasy or stylized sci-fi stuff look at the fidelity those games pull off (I mean there are parts were Rift Apart looks like a straight-up Pixar movie), but Flight Sim is probably still within the Top 5, definitely Top 10 for best looking games on console.
