PS5 price to increase in select markets

I really hope ms don't follow and go the opposite and start offering better bundles at the same price point, sony need humbling this gen.
id kill for microsoft to release a themed console bundle in the next week for any game whether first or 3rd party and if they want take it a step further and make this bundle 450 for the time its out

A lot of the prices that have gone up are due to supply chain issues that have not affected electronics since the chip shortage. I see electronics go on sale all the time. Grocery stores have seen some items increase in prices but not all because not everyone is suffering from the same trucker shortages or other supply chain issues.

Nintendo, Microsoft, Nvidia and AMD AIBs all use the same supply lanes. If this was such a huge issue, they would all be raising prices. Instead, GPU prices are in free fall. I think this is due to underwhelming software sales, Jim's inability to manufacture more consoles, and his dumb decision to fork over $3.2 billion on one studio that hasnt released a game since 2017.

Chip components are only a fraction of the cost

Assembly, shipping/logistics, and unfavorable currency exchanges has certainly impacted the total cost of the product in a way that Sony wasn’t willing to eat.

I don’t think they like raising the price either, as the fallout of negativity and the stigma of a hike will lead to potential lessening of demand long term

Why is this on a gaming board? They are a software company and have layoffs all the time. We dont know if this even impacts games directly.

Read the thread, not wasting my time.

And no, layoffs of that size are not that common. When you're talking about that many people it typically only happens when there's a sharp downturn in economic conditions or when there's wholesale business restructuring. It's their largest single batch since they had to deal with the Nokia write-down.

Again why is this on a gaming board? Ms laid off 14% of its work force in 2014. 1% isnt much when they are about to acquire what, 12000 employees in the activision purchase. People around here are just looking for something to offset the bad news of price increases.

I've already explained why it's actually a good thing for their consumers (both current and potential) as it's a way of maintaining margins without having to raise prices and pass the cost on to consumers while we are in an inflationary environment. Hence I said I don't think they will need to raise any prices for Xbox products.

But you do you. The defensiveness is quite something.

The damn console is already like $700 dollars here in Mexico, I got mine during a sale and got it at US prices, but what a way to punish late buyers.

Wouldn't their fanboys have a PS5 already at this point? Ain't nobody making purchase decisions of a 10% difference in price, ain't nobody legitimately outraged over this.

I'm way more bothered buy how much PS+ Premium sucks than I'm over PS5 getting a slightly more expensive. Going for Deluxe/Premium over Extra really feels like getting suckered into a bad deal.
Its more than that.
This generation Sony fanboys have been given more black eyes by Sony than they have by Microsoft.
We have PC ports which the fanboys screamed would never happen because Sony values its customers.
We have $70 games.
We have cost to upgrade games.
We have Sony copying Gamepass after its warriors spent years proclaiming how a subscription service is destroying the industry.
They bought Bungie and then kept them Multiplatform.

It's been a bad year for the console warriors, and Sony increasing the cost of the PS5, when we all know that prices should be decreasing further into the gen instead of increasing is just another slap in the face.
At some point they may just realise that Sony (,And Microsoft) don't care about you. They care about their share holders and their budgets. You are nothing more than a source of revenue.

Sony increased prices outside the US because they are pretty comfortable where they are at. In the US however Xbox been outselling PS5 for months now. Competition is good

So no evidence whatsoever, so I will stick with my initial assumption that scalpers will go for a massive worldwide site like E-bay to re sell their consoles.
Fine by me, as long as you accept and acknowledge that it's just as much an assumption.

I think the amount of markets PlayStation is in worldwide even hurt them more in this case. Xbox is in half the countries PS is in.

No. They are posting record profits. They are supposed to lose money during hardware launches and they somehow managed to avoid that and posted $3.25 billion in profit in their 2020 fiscal year.

And I really dont want to hear any excuses about the pandemic or inflation. This is not the first time the economy has been bad. Sony released the first playstation in 1994. There have been two major recessions since. Including a dot com crash and a recession that killed billion dollar banks. No one raised any prices. In fact, Sony was still losing money in 2009 when they launched the Slim for $299.

Lol. I usually appreciate your posts Slimy but this is straight up tales from your ass.

Sony wasn’t some .com startup and recessions don’t uniformally impact businesses. What does impact a company like Sony is when there is an unprecedented multi-year chip shortage, when cost of goods hit a 40 year high, when shipping sees significant cost increases due to energy production and supply chain issues.

Record profits disappear pretty quickly if you start taking major losses on the products you are selling when trying to offset global economic conditions. Especially when those conditions have an outsized impact on your particular industry.

But but Nintendo and Microsoft. Nintendo is selling outdated hardware built with much less expensive components and Microsoft has already committed to Xbox/gamepass being a loss leader this gen. Neither one of them are in the business position Sony is.

None of that shit really matters, quality games kept coming, PS+ extra was surprisingly good and they didn't sacrifice their AAA single player games to answer Gamepass.

Who cares if Bungie games are exclusive or not? They were already multiplataform.

I really don't get how the rise in price of a product the most hardcore fans already have it going to bother them, if anything they should be glad they bought it before the price increase.

I'm not Sony's friend, the moment they stop making games I like and top tier games in general I'll turn on them just as fast as I turned on MS and most other trash game publishers. I rather pay $70 for a game that I think will be worth it than $20 for a game I don't want to play.

Sony is raising the price not because they had a bad year, quite the opposite, they can afford to raise it because they blew their direct competitor away this gen and more big games are about to release this year. It's like MS wasn't ready at all for this gen and never even showed up.

I wonder if Sony would pull this stunt if Starfield ended up being released as expected in November, making it a more competitive environment for content and console purchases.

Imagine the mental gymnastics needed to defend SIE placing the burden of revenue on their customers 2 yrs after product debut in the middle of a global recession, whilst simultaneously boasting about their record profits last quarter 😂🥹🥹
Sony truly deserves it's fans
The "Burden of revenue" is always on the customers. Are you one of those people who think corporations are you friends? The playstation 5 continues to be sold out nearly instantaneously the moment it hit store shelves almost 2 years after its release. You are utterly delusional if you think a 10% price increase (which is like that, 50 euro's? That's not even the price of a game) is going to change that.

The Playstation 5 will most likely continue to be sold out for another year at least and by that time I'd reckon that we won't be hearing about your "Mental gymnastics" anymore.

To all those really upset about the price increase, I have good a proposition for you.

Make a video of you completely destroying your Series S or Series X and I'll give you $30.

Those "losses" are down purely to supply though. So it's not really indicative of why Sony didn't hike the price in the US

I guarantee you that if the USD lost 20% to foreign currencies that they'd be hiking the price in the US as well.

I wanted to eventually dump my PS4 for a 5 since I'd lose nothing but I don't know if I'll even do that. I'll just get judgement 2 for PS4 if it doesn't get ported due to Kimura Takuya's likeness.

Sony is coming off of not one but TWO record shattering years where they posted insane profits from their PS division alone.

For FY 2020, PlayStation generated over $3.23 billion in profits alone, another new record, marking the first time in the industry where the 3 billion dollar marker was exceeded.

In an earnings report, Sony confirmed that its Game & Network Services Segment generated 2,739 billion yen ($20 billion) in revenue during fiscal 2021. That contributed to flat year-over-year profits of 346 billion yen ($2.65 billion).

These guys along with MS and Nintendo made a shit ton of cash thanks to the pandemic forcing everyone to stay home and become nerds like the rest of us. Forgive me if I dont feel sorry for a company that made almost $6 billion in profits over the last two years alone. Shit's getting more expensive? Dip into your savings and eat the fucking cost. Dont pass it on to the customers. They did not do it during the great recession.

They are expecting another $2.2 billion in profits this year AFTER they deduct the Bungie deal which was $3.2 billion from their overall profits. So they were expecting $5.4 billion in profits this year. What kind of company does that? A cheap one.

Don't worry you can fucking curse here if you fucking feel like it. It's usually discouraged and don't be fucking excessive about it.

Just don't use it to berate or call names to other forum members.

For instance i can say " This price increase is fucking stupid" but i cant say "anyone who agrees with this is a stupid fucking cunt"

For the most amusement end all posts with Happy Easter you Cunt.

1800 people being layed off in one go (with a further 200 since then) isn't a mass layoff? Imagine sitting in a room of 2000 people who have all been fired and then saying "guys, this isn't a mass layoff, love Microsoft".

What are you smoking?
Seems like almost every tech company is doing this, as a business, at any stage, you need to pivot when necessary, reorganise, and always look for ways to increase efficiency;

Or you can pass the increased cost to your customers (would be interesting if Sony reports record next quarter in terms of profit.

Btw. Sony was ahead of everyone on this starting in April with layoffs but still greed won and now they increase prices
