Square Enix is not playing with box art these days.

Just something i’ve noticed while pre ordering all 12 of their upcoming games. Makes me wish i still bought physical games

Damn, that is some nice art. Likely ripped/cleaned up from concept art, but they're all pretty good.

Shame about the 3D models for most of them though, especially Star Ocean and Valkyrie Elysium.

For me SE is putting a lot of games I want as well. Always been a fan of most artwork that came from them as well

Then you must not even remotely like JRPGs. Valkyrie, Star Ocean and the Ogre series are old and established series.
thats the funny thing, I do like them, all im playing right now is xenoblade chronicles 3

i mean, have i heard ' star ocean', I mean yeah, just never knew something new was happening, but nope, not valkyrie or ogre

I can appreciate the Tactics Ogre Reborn image as an updated take on the original box art for the Super Famicom. In terms of composition, most of the other SE covers on display are just boring character pyramids. I do prefer the usage of 2D art, over pre-rendered graphics, but most are still just conventional marketing pieces; that so many are coming from either the same artist, or at least created in a similar style, is also less than exciting. With the company maintaining its own manga-publishing division, it'd be cool to see them tap some of that talent for concept art and commercial imagery.

SE has been on a roll in recent years. I don't even care for the mainline Final Fantasy's but their A/AA/budget titles have been great with some great boxart to boot for several years now.

Was checking my pre-orders earlier today and just for the rest of the year I've already pre-ordered Diofield Chronicle, Nier Automata (mostly for collection since I already finished it on PC, but whatever), Harvestella and Tactics Ogre Reborn from them. And I will probably get Valkyria Elysium and Star Ocean for cheap on PS4 later down the road.

I'm not convonced by the Star Ocean one but the rest are really good I agree. Whoever was put in charge of these should definitely get a raise.

Though Triangle Strategy still has the best on IMO.

Unless we count the alternative cover of Stranger of Paradise

Imagine buying this based on the artwork.
Then you load it up and...

Not hating, I like the game but it's funny for casuals 😂
The pre-PS2 era in a nutshell.
The original NES “black box” series was basically the only time in the history of games before the 2000s when the box art was actually “what you see is what you get”.

I love these covers, but the “character group pic” style is beyond abused at this point. Kudos for not having all characters look edgy and badass while staring grimly at the viewer like it’s customary in western boxart, but these compositions do lack some bite. They remind me more of fighting games boxart from the old days than of JRPGs. The art and color are top-notch, though.

All it took was to ditch nomura and what do you know, there’s actual talent at the company
Games under his direction just about killed any of my interest in anything SquareEnix related. And they really leaned in with him for like a decade.

In YoshiP I trust.
