BREAKING: Sony is acquiring Bungie for 3.6b

It makes sense for Sony to want to acquire Bungie. But for 3.6 Billion? I think the money could have been better spent.

Weird times for sure. Sony's say all the right things here and maybe that's true as they don't have "fuck you" money like MS.

People think they do acquisitions as s form pleasing their console war fetishes.

When this could mean spending billions just for a single IP(Destiny or CoD), while firing everyone who they think won't be worth in the deal.

They desperately needed popular MP shooter and now they have it, potentially even two. IIRC Bungie was working on new IP and maybe Hulst and co loved what they saw.

Sounds like more big things are coming soon

So looks like Sony was in buy mode longer than we thought.

And Bungie is a multiplatform game maker (Destiny).

So where's all the "Sony only buys studios they work closely with" rhetoric now? And for all the MS haters doing deals, dont forget to do your $3.6B buy out analysis for a studio whose last game was Destiny 2.

we knew MS changed the landscape and started this - look at them for the reason all this is happening.

IMO it's a good get...hate Destiny all you want, Bungie is still the best at making games with stellar shooting mechanics alongside Doom

don't conflate shooting mechanics with game feel... Halo and Destiny feel good to play because of how the weapons feel while shooting, but the mechanics in Destiny and Halo are extremely archaic and dumbed down beyond belief compared to most modern shooters.

baby's first FPS is what you often hear from shooter players when talking about Halo's mechanics (which Destiny basically uses as well still)

And? I don't see your point? My dad can beat up your dad? MS's money doesn't primarily come from their gaming division. Like, say Nintendo. Sony also has other divisions but their gaming division is a massive part.
M can spend much more than sony for acquisition, how you don't see the point when we are talking about an acqusition war?!

ffs they just bought activision that costed like 3+ times the entire budget that sony has for acquisitions...

Not really

Different objectives

Destiny is a far bigger cash cow than almost all Zenimax properties collectively

Sony lost CoD, needs to provide leverage against MS for keeping CoD multiplatform, needs to keep PS plus subs, has a huge hole in their studios for both a shooter and a GaaS franchise

It makes sense for Sony

Bethesda is a huge amount of studios, employees to pay and manage. Microsoft needed the studios, Sony doesn’t.
Do you have receipts because all information has pointed to destiny being on a downward trend from the moment destiny 2 launched.

I am not seeing the cash cow you are mentioning?

You gotta love people with the mentality that "I don't like thing, therefore thing is not succesful"

Anyway I bet this isn't about Destiny.

Basically any new IP will be PS5 exclusive or maybe PS5 and PC.

Only way they'll let Xbox have it is if they get COD.

If the two strike a swap bargain would be potentially good for gamers. I'd back Bungie to make much better games under Sony considering the first party output is of such high quality.

What time is it?
Jimbo says more acquisitions are coming too

If rumors are true, Bungie could benefit on the engine side (stuff like simple object moves taking a day+). Sony's development houses are good at collaboration.

It's an expensive purchase for sure, but if bungie with a few hundred devs can come out with something decent it will pay off massively.

Yes and it cost $70 Billion to do that!!!!
TBF Microsoft has a lot of cash they want to use, so the more they can use in a single purchase, the better.

Think it has something to do with taxes, why they want to offload some of their cash-on-hand so big purchases like Activision-Blizzard make sense considering it does that and gets them a lot of IP & resources with it.

They are preparing to go 3rd party imo, but you can't mention that here without causing a fanboy holocaust.
Maybe they will buy back their VAIO brand again and make a PlayStation pc…. Lol

Now seriously
Pc players rarely buy consoles… we seen Sony releasing some games on PC. I don’t see any harm on it… as long as they keep betting on new IPs - thing that all the gaming industry been lacking to do

Finding the comparison between the two strategies incredibly interesting. One going for WMD acquisitions, one going for precision guided bombing (out of necessity, no doubt). I’m going to love watching how it plays out over the coming years. No guarantee for victory on either side right now.

It’ll all come down to quality of games produced. Nothing else matters.

I agree with what you're saying, that's why i don't play them anymore.

Game feel is prob the hardest part - so many games fail at it.

Get ready for the year of acquisitions.

The fps genre certainly needed a boost in Playstation but for this amount of money i would personally buy Square Enix.
Ok, but what if Square doesn't want to be bought? They can survive, they have an 'exclusive' deal with PlayStation for FFXVI and FFVII, a bunch of Switch games about to be released and in development, success with 'new' ip like Nier and their catalog is on GamePass, they are also expanding. their western branch isn't perfect but they are improving

This is the thing with these acquisitions, why hope Sony gets a healthy big company that makes games for everyone, Sony even sold their Square Enix shares years ago, afaik

I still go back to that you can't buy a company that's not for sale. Actiblizz was looking to sell. Is Ubisoft/ea etc. looking to sell? I doubt it. They're trucking along just fine.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Not a fan of Halo or Destiny, but i heard those dude know their shit when it comes to gunplay, so yeah happy for the ps bros.

Could be put to good use with some of the classic sony fps IPs, but honestly I think I would prefer something new.

Strong move. Sony is going to be alright. I see them buying Square Enix next so they can make FF14 their answer to WoW. Then in 2023 they put Spiderman 2 on Playstation Plus Pass Day 1 and watch the sub numbers explode.

Because MP games make more money, just look at the top revenue generating games right now...

Sega or Konami can't make good MP games like Bungie can
Konami may not be able to anymore because they drove every competent dev out of the company, but they at least have IP that's great for multiplayer experiences like Bomberman and Momotaro Dentetsu from Hudson Soft (RIP

And I don't buy the idea that Sega can't make a good multiplayer game with their long history of making, well, multiplayer arcade games. I mean heck their most popular arcade title was Daytona USA, which had a 8-player max. Sega is in fact probably one of the strongest third-party choices for that sort of thing.

Don't worry guys. Sony used Spider Man: No Way Home revenue for this acquisition.

Wait you really believe the bolded? Destiny is bigger than Elder Scrolls, Doom, Elder Scrolls Online, Fallout, and all the Arkane stuff added together?

I....I am flabbergasted.

I dont get this purchase as someone who plays destiny on and off the way current destiny is is terrible them reselling you old stuff again and locking off content you cant play year 1 Destiny stuff in current Destiny so good luck if you care about the lore. Warframe is 10x better than destiny as a shooter a MMO and a looter base game it is way better than Destiny just saying congrats to sony non the less maybe they can turn them around.

I don't play Destiny and I really don't care but it's a very interesting buy and seems another big move for Sony towards its likely console-independent future.

Good for Sony, welcome to the big leagues Boys!! This is why you should have all the consoles, don't lock yourself into 1 and champion for it. Once I finish the HZD maybe I'll hop on Destiny and see what's changed. It's been SOOOO LONG for me.
