So... Speaking as a non-game dev but as a software engineer, is there a meaningful performance issue here? Because provided they're using something like HTML, CSS and some kind of modern UI framework (React, Vue, etc) I don't see how 1080 vs 4k matters at least in terms of things like asset size.

If everything isn't an ultra hd static asset (e.g. .png, .jpg) vs HTML or SVGs then it should be small and fast. I can't imagine it takes up an appreciable amount of memory to go to 4k, unless there's other stuff on the dash that must be bigger beyond the UI elements.

So I'd guess it's down to GPU just pushing more pixels right? For the output? Only sort of tuning I can think of, past mystery assets I cannot account for.

Someone with more game dev or embedded systems dev can correct me.

Very nice. But please add HDR to the dashboard so I dont get a black screen for a second when switching from game to dash and vice-versa.

this is 1000 times more important than the 4k dashboard (i couldn't care less about this to be honest). Hope they will do it after.

The other good news also 1000 times more important than 4k dashboard is that they finally added the auto mute TV when you have a headset connected (currently only for alpha and alpha skip ahead)

Thank GOD. It was not a huge deal , it was more so annoying when you go from a game to the home screen, and your screen goes blank for a few seconds so your TV can raise or lower your resolution.

Doesn't have anything to do with resolution, your TV goes black because of the HDR to SDR switch (and I'm pretty sure that the output for the dash is 4K anyway, even if the real resolution is/was 1080p)

I simply do not understand this need to have Dashboard in HDR. You can watch Vincent’s videos, he puts AppleTV’s dashboard to SDR, even though you can default it to DolbyVision. It is not good for OLED screens to have so much static images in HDR

nothing wrong with having screen going black for 2-3 seconds

Yeah , that is true. It is the HDR turning on and off. I always forget about that.

We already have a thread about this......from months ago.
Are we gonna make a new one for every ring that gets included?

Good, good. I play on a 4K monitor and the menus look like shit at the moment tbh. Give me that clarity.

Pretty sure the point of the post is that this now includes all rings

Modern OLED TVs go dark if you don't do anything on them for a minute or two. Burn-in really isn't an issue anymore.

you spend a minimal time on a console dashboard, so that's not really an accurate comparison (and anyway the xbox has a screensaver to avoid this kind of problem)

This is correct. Disable hdr, no more black screen when switching to an hdr game

It’s not 4k.

Those images are decided by the developers.
If they dont upload a 4K image whatever resolution they upload for the cover art is what the cover art will be they could upload a 10K image if they wanted and the tile will be 10K resolution.
Some devs are just "lazy" and dont upload super duper resolution cover art for their games.

The dashboard itself is however 4K in this update.

Or they uploaded the picture for the game in like 2015 and there was no reason to submit anything beyond the max res the console would show!

That's great news.

But I do remember when people said MS was smartling not using 4K dashboard to have more resources for games haha

I mean that was (and is) the case. They just got some time and put in the effort to optimize everything to fit within the fixed system resource budget. A lot of these improvements come from the dev exploration time which lets them work on their own interests once a week or so, so progress is slow but appreciated.

Made a crappy phPBB forum once ... once.
Dammit I had to come out of the preview due to to many system issues (not slagging anything off) but wouldn’t mind seeing this now.

Totally likely.
At time of cert alot of games likely didnt bother uploading 4K+ thumbnails so the thumbnails might look lower resolution for some titles.

Join the lowest tier.
Those updates are basically weeks if not days away from hitting genpop.

Whatever they did, it will not be using any more resources than was allocated to the system previously. Nothing but a win (for those who will notice).
