Would you rather only play real-looking games at 240p or PS3-looking games at 8k for the next 10 years?

You have the power to change the industry: Extreme realism or extreme resolution?

You went too far down OP. I would play 720p games with real nextgen quality everytime against 8k old gen. More so now that supersampling is getting better by the day.

Neither.. 8k isn't any more attractive to me than 240p, especially considering that I'll just be looking at bland graphics in extremely fine detail... 240p with a CRT

I think 240p would be close to unplayable, and it would certainly look worse than pin-sharp PS3 games, which actually look sort of ok in general.

I do think it's a bit of a silly question, though. Why not ask a more realistic one, e.g. 720p30 CGI quality or 4k60 PS4 quality?

Neither, they would both look like shit.

Shit graphic in 8k remains shit and you can't even see the details of real life graphic with such a low resolution.

240p on a handheld wouldn't be that bad. But it will simplify game design, some genres might go extinct like rts, strategy, some rpg's (menus, text, etc).

Well people on here love the teeny tiny driveclub gifs, so..........

Anyone choosing 240p should be banned lol

Of course you are. 240p it’s rather unpleasant to look at these days but real footage still does look real, while PS3 graphics won’t ever look real at 8k or whatever resolution you want.
240p would be unplayable on a big 4k TV.

Why 240p? I’d definitely rather play 1080p/1440p games with insane worlds and graphical detail and 60fps rather than PS3/360 style games chasing native 4k and inevitably 8k.

Plays with kids toys, in the adult gaming world
240p 120hz looks amazing on my CRT I play battlefront 2015 that way

I gamed at 8K using DSR everything looks bad at that resolution that isn't native that resolution

Not all PS3 games were bad though. Something like Prince of Persia (2008) is still beautiful. Resistance 3 is amazing. 8K would do wonders for them.

The decision would have been tougher if you had said 720p instead of 240p. I'm perfectly happy with PS3 quality games at 1080p let alone 8k

But we are talking ps3 games with ps3 resolution textures, not 8k textures.

Only the general resolution is ugraded, not the texture resolution, so you would have low res textures in 8k.

When i tried binary domain 4k on pc it looked exactly like a super crisp old game.

Now we can argue that some ps3 still looks good like killzone series etc, but we are used to far better graphics today so to me they already look kinda old to me.

but yeah, maybe ps3 games at 8k have a slight advantage in this context, although i'm an animations guy so maybe seeing real life animations even at 240p could win me over.

Id pick real looking games if it was 720p lmao but ps3 8k is good enough for me but tbh as someone who enjoys Nintendo games shitty graphics and resolution dont really bother me as long as a games fun and enaging

I'd like PS3 looking games now anyway if it meant their budget went into gameplay systems, AI and physics instead of spending so much on high quality graphics.

The 240p easily. New games look mindblowingly good on even old CRT TVs, I can't imagine how good a truly photo-realistic game would look. You could be flexible and run the games in 480i, which would technically be allowed here as it's just an interlaced 'hack' of the 240p standard. CRT is also unsurpassed when it comes to latency so the games would also feel better too.

It does make me think that developers (and I guess consumer demand) is being pretty stupid with their visual priorities nowadays. I keep seeing games offer shit like 4K60 without ray tracing or 1440p30 with ray tracing - why not offer even more options like 900p60 with ray tracing too? I will always sacrifice muh resolution first before cutting performance and key visual effects.

People who are voting 240p probably do not realise how low it actually is.
Or they still have a good CRT at home, and know how good it actually looks.

I already pick CRT over HD TV every time it is possible, even 480i is fine on my TV, the signal is pretty clean with minimal flickering. I get a perfectly smooth image, and it makes a huge difference for gaming.

I had been playing quite a lot on my CRT these days, and when I had to move back to my HD TV (pretty decent one by the way), to play Sonic Colours Ultimate (60fps game), I was literally crying from eyestrain during the first two days. Every time I go back to HD TVs, I have to get back my habits of not looking at the scenery too much, because it is so blurry.

No. Not even NTSC looks like real life, and that's already 480p. It's definitely distinguishable from real life. When was the last time you watched SD TV footage?

But with modern games you wouldn't even be able to read text properly on 240p.
Indeed. But even with a 4K screen, text is sometimes so fucking small you can't actually read anything from the place you are sitting. We lost all common-sense.

What an odd topic.

Here's GTAV at 300p.

On a CRT 240p is OK but on modern TVs it would be horrible.

Huh. But they told me you couldn’t tell where the car ends and the road begins :pie_thinking:

I like how PS3 graphics are suddenly OK in context. Take any other thread and you have all these people barfing at the very idea of booting up a PS3 game again.

That's true unfortunately, i have a good eyesight and still struggle with some games

I'm just wondering how a game at 240p can possibly look 'real'? Simulating someone with extremely poor eyesight maybe...?

Perhaps it would have been better to have worded it as 720p or 1080p since both are pretty much standard resolutions these days. I'd wage most people still own 1080p TVs as opposed to 4K or (utterly pointless in my opinion) 8K TVs.

If the game is good, I can play with any settings. Actually I can't even understand what the options we are given mean xD

I play games for the adventure/atmosphere/immersion and graphics are never something I take in consideration when I choose a game.
It somehow puzzles me that graphics are such a big deal for many

Trails and Ys games are basically PS3 games and im more than happy to play them at high resolutions and framerates.

My post was about real footage at 240p still looking real, not discussing if it’s playable or not.
Of course real footage looks real at 240p, but games at 240p would be unplayable so it's a moot point.

I also assume we're not talking downscaled to 240p either.

The 30% of people who chose 240p are out of their damn minds. You wouldn't be able to see any details in your "real-looking" games.

Ummm neither? I would love to see some 1080p/30 games that go for ultra realism or insane levels of detail that's just not possible at 4K/60 though.
