Let's say you have the power to choose what games would look like (no matter what platform) for the next 10 years. What would you prefer: Super realistic games (indistinguishable from real life, like a movie) at 240p or PS3-looking games at a crisp 8K (or more)?

Comments and rules:

- Yes, you could use a nice CRT TV for 240p if you wanted.
- Yes, I'm going for extremes here and setting a time-frame you'd have to live with your choice to force you to really think about it.
- You have to choose one of the pre-determined options. You can't comment something like "games from the next generation at 1080p" or "Atari games at 200K". Comment about your reasoning for choosing the option you chose.
- If you don't care about game graphics, please don't derail the thread with your comments. Go away. Shush!
- DLSS or other upscaling techniques are not allowed in this hypothetical scenario.

Examples:

240p:

8k PS3:

That's exactly why I made the topic. :messenger_tears_of_joy: It's a hard choice. Go back 2 generations in graphics or play real graphics at 240p
It’s not hard though. MGS4 and Uncharted 3 is not bad looking by any means, and at 8k? That’d be glorious.

Now, check out a 240p video on YouTube (if there even is one) and tell me if you can even see what you’re looking at.

TBH compression play's a big role in how bad YouTube videos look. PS1, Saturn and N64 used to render at 240p and it was playable.

If you said "real looking games at 1080p" I would be all in. 240p you can't even tell where the car ends and the road begins. Unless it's "real looking games at 240p on a old crt tv".
The problem is 1080p looks okay for most people. This thought experiment is about big compromises. And yes, you'd be able to use a CRT if you wanted to.

240p looks like 💩 on modern screens (and no I'm not going to have a big CRT just for it).

But principally I'd agree that graphical details have been more important than resolution for a while. But we'd need to be at least at DVD quality 480p, then photorealism would still look way beyond what we have at 4K on modern hardware. PS3 graphics on 8K is a tremendous waste of power. A DVD definitely looks a lot more real than an 8K game.

Make it 480 at least jeez and even then I would choose ME legendary edition or Uncharted remastered any day.

720p and we have a discussion.

So, let's take Uncharted 4, max it out, add 8x SSAA and set it to 240p. Let's see what happens.

I'll start off by saying I'd still vote 240P. A truly photorealistic game takes hundreds of times more power to render than 8k PS3 games, maybe more. Plus I still love my crts

That said I think you missed the mark in your attempt to compare extremes. it would make more sense to go for something like 480p. going up to 8k barely changes things but 240p it a big gap

I would even rather go to GameCube graphics at 8K than realistic ones at below SD

screen clarity is very important for many genres, especially online shooters.
look at what esports focused games look like... this is Valorant which is not even 2 years old, running at max settings:

artstyle + clarity > realism

Well, I'd rather not play at all. I can't stand older, low-polygon-count-games with low resolution textures rendered at high resolutions, so all of its flaws stick out.

So if I'd really have to choose, I'd much rather have all the good stuff at 240p, but on a 20" CRT TV. Or perhaps a 3-5" OLED or something, I don't know.

If that's not an option and I have to use my 65" OLED, PS3 graphics I guess. But I wouldn't be playing at all then.

Damn, what are they playing? Looks hype. My friend told me they were playing Skullgirls at Norcal Regionals, but I'm saying that's Darkstalkers 3. One of my other friends said it was Power Stone for the Dreamcast, but someone else said it was Bloody Roar for the Gamecube.

Not 240p but 640p? Hell yes, that's the resolution I watched Avatar on DVD and NOTHING can't match that in real time...

PS3 looking obviously(im assuming there are some slightly better looking games like Switch/Wii U quality and not literal PS3)

60fps/120fps,good image quality.

240p is a joke and negates any fancy graphics, you could have picked 720 ish to make it more interesting
