Digital Foundry's Alex on Project Eve's main female character: "old (2000's) and not flattering to a Modern Audience...in comparison to...Forespoken"

The thing that I find EVE's character design by Hyung Tae Kim - She just looks like every 3d pretty girl character in any given Korean games.
It's like seeing the common Gangnam plastic girls.. or all those BJ stream girls. I tend to like a beauty in more natural form, rather than somewhat manufactured look. Because 3d look so real in sometimes, those types of things do get in the way for my taste.

duudocB.jpg

(a comic strip making fun of how all the Korean girls who went thru plastic surgery looking the same)

On top of that, it seems a bit weird to see a baby's face on fully grown mature body - that it just makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. I mean they even have a word for it - Bagle girl - (Baby face, glamorous body) - but this one just seems to have put it up to another level. If her face and the body had better balance, I would have liked more.

I actually preferred the antagonist character's face - you know, former friend/senpai who turned to dark side girl - although the concern that I have with the game, it's seemingly very stereo-typical, nothing really new or fresh in concept. I do hope it will have some unique storytelling and narrative, than just mix of after human extinction android of Nier Automata (and the butt) + Eva Angel boss characters.

I mean, I'm used to seeing same faces on 2D side - like manga and anime, but like in anything in 2D - it's easier to "imagine" and overlook as they are figment of imagination... but seeing 3d is somewhat different, I must say. Uncanny valley being one thing - but some characters faces look so much alike, it's sometimes a distraction. For that specific reason, I really like Tae Hyung Kim's 2D illustrations. For that same reason, I don't really particularly favor 3d renderings of anime style characters, unless it's cell-shaded or something similar. (not a big fan of FF7 Remake either... all the girls, Tifa, Yuffie, Aerith, jesse etc look the same with slightly different facial features. Kids look the same too.)

I do however like the gfx for the game, if not little too flashy - especially the non-humanoid enemies. That feathery space boss thing is quite something (reminds me so much of angel in Eva though - but not in a bad sense) I hope the gameplay and story itself holds up.

Is it less embarassing if she walks in and you’re playing a realistic game where you’re shooting people?

As you say later. Depends on the relationship. I don’t get any weird looks at home at least but in the end it’s not real, it’s polygons. We would have to close down the whole hobby if we claim it’s more than that.
Shooting people realistically in the face in a videogame might be more social expectable, or less embarrassing. Either way world is fucked. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Lets see how a female youtuber from the "modern audince" reacts to Project Eve.

Wait, wheres the outrage? Why u want to cosplay as this disgusting character? Oh yeah, u like to have fun and dont live in a bubble inside a purple asylum.

She called her cute? And wants to cosplay as her?

None of the female reacters I've seen have had a problem with the design. They actually have loved how she looked.
That damned internalized misogyny strikes again!

Funny how most often, the ones complaining about female character designs....are ALL MEN!

Hot? Looks like a blow up doll. Stereotypical “attractive woman“ bot comment for pointless likes. He’s not talking about the sexuality of the character, she looks like a cartoon character in a hyper realistic game. Hell I would just like the environment lighting to actually work. Your games‘ whores dont have to stick out like a sore thumb.

I dont care that she’s flashing her pussy on the players view every 2 mins. Someone just fix her shaders or she needs to stop polishing her suit every morning.
Kid: mom can we buy an hyper realistic game?
Mom: teddy, we already have an hyper realistic game at home.

The hyper realistic game at home being like:

Its not like I have an axe to grind here. I would also cringe seeing Marcus fighting the Locust in Gears of War while he jumps all over the place in spandex with the camera focusing on his crotch
You can play Spider-man on PS4 where he jumps all over the place in spandex with the camera focusing on his crotch.

In this react, she says: "Eastern games have such beautiful women"

A lot of women simply want to play as pretty women. All the complaining is essentially coming from gay men wanting all of gaming to conform to their tastes of men and females that look like men and for some reason, Western gaming companies cater to that minority.

She's completely distracting in that she stands out from the background too much, that hyper shiny butt and 4m legs looks rediculous against a really well done post apocalyptic landscape, the art style is all over the place but then again it's designed to appeal to cunts with anime avatars, should add I'm not against female characters being asethically pleasing to the eye but I'd feel embarrassed as fuck playing this and the wife walked in...
Why are you playing video games in the kitchen?

They've switched from "just give us some diversity with real women characters" to "the old ways no longer apply, we literally DO want to take your sexy games. They shouldn't exist". And that's what bothers me.
Most people guessed that's what they were aiming for to begin with if you analyzed their words and reasonings. Since after all, they kept on getting upset at any depiction whatsoever that didn't meet their "standards" (even from games with niche audiences, as long as they somehow got any spotlight or attention on them whatsoever). Even as more and more games, in the West especially, drastically toned things down where we now have multiple high level products featuring lead female characters that show absolutely zero sex appeal whatsoever, that the outliers from Asia are now still "offensive" to them.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
What's that? Someone with an animu avatar likes tacky female designs? Why I NEVER could have imagined that.

Look at this. This is actually beautiful, artful and sexy. This is what these woke assholes want to take away.
I think it look fantastic

That's pretty badass. The helmet even accommodates the hair and scoops it in.

Yeah I'm all for games appropriately representing girls in games. But I don't think its something as simple as no cleavage and modest clothes. I'm a guy so I don't really have an opinion with value on how girls who play games like to see girls characters in games. But I'm willing to bet it is a broad spectrum that also includes girls like the ones in this game.

If anything, it's kind of offensive to assume they want to be nearly genderless and over simplified like the characters in that new Saints Row.

Just because you are a guy, does not mean you don't get to have an opinion on this.
IN FACT YOU DO THE MOST ! You will play this game, You want the game to look good and characters to appeal to you.
If women are not supposed to be attractive to men... then wtf.

I am so tired of this silly type of conversation. I don't care if a game has a male or female protagonist. I don't care the color of their skin, or the color of their hair. I don't care about their age or whether they are dressed sexy or not. All I care about is the story and the game play. You can have "hot" characters in a shit game, or a great game. You can have "diversity" in a shit game, or a great game. This focus on "identity" and what is acceptable or not acceptable is always going to be changing. I appreciate developers who make their best game and fulfill their vision, and especially if it has a good story, or good game play, or in the best case scenario, both!

People with anime avatars
Ofcourse the Anime Avatars are already furious about his opinion.

Personally: I think he has a point. There's a clear difference between sexy and oversexualization and a lot of camera angles clearly served no purpose other than to do just that. Its even more ridiculous in the announcement trailer:

Yep. If anime avatar fuckers are all in a tizzy then the dude must have a point.

Yeah but I can't speak for female gamers. A smaller part of the greater gaming community. I would hate to think that because it's so easy and common to appeal to male interests, that that focus alienates some people from enjoying these games. Just like how I wouldn't really want to play a game where a male character has a giant juicy booty constantly shoved in my face; I'm sure there are girls that feel the same way regarding the female body.

It's a hard thing to advocate for and get right. I'm not sure how you do it. But I also don't want developers to completely avoid beautiful, female character models. It's a tough thing to understand, but I like that developers are poking at it and at least trying to figure it out. Just don't condemn studios like this one because they represented a woman this way.

Should we be offended? I'm listening to the show now and thought it was a dumb argument and nothing offensive.

Sometimes people in different parts of the world are disconnected to how the rest see things.

PLEASE DONT CANCEL HIM NOT GOOD ONES!!!!!!!

Remarked in the other thread, this is just brilliant stuff. Top drawer in every respect. But do they pass comment on this? Hell no, they are so progressive all they focus on is the protagonist's butt!

The stench of hypocrisy and disingenuousness is overpowering.

These are the same type of people cheering for lil nas x having a toilet orgy on the MVAs. idiots who just want to fit in with the Twitter fuxz.

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
For me I feel like there's more than enough balance now.. it wasn't a great look when almost every female character in a game was sexualized, and it's good that we see more well rounded characters.

But I think it's fine to have some sexy characters too.. even ones w/ purposeful ass zooms.

At some point you should declare victory and celebrate the diversity of thought in media and stop worrying about the now smaller percentage of T&A games.

Words and deeds.

I don't think it's too sexy at all.

The problem I have with it is the character is just too much anime for my taste. I find most anime designs off putting. Horny nerds drawing their weird idealized women. I guess I'm not surprised by people's reaction though. Whatever. Let them have their fun.

I'm looking forward to playing it, myself. It looks completely OTT.

Also, did Alex complain about 2B and A2, at all? I mean, both of them are prancing about in their underwear (yes, their robots, but ...)

You already have that. Most male protagonists are extreme manly and good looking. Nathan drake in uc4, Kratos, Joel.
But we like our men good looking too !

The game looks cool. Honestly don't care if the character was a giant walking penis with arms. If the game is fun I don't really care about who I'm playing as.

Even then, I don't see the character design to be all that egregious. It looks like an over the top action game, so having an over the top sexy character design doesn't seem to be off the mark with the vibe of the game.

When was this ever the case?

No, I'm serious... This was a narrative pushed by the likes of Feminist Frequency. But it could only possibly be true when you look back at the history of gaming when you cherry-pick certain titles and then ignore everything else that doesn't fit your narrative.

It was WAAAAAAY more true in comics than it was in videogames. For every sexualized character in gaming, there was always 3-4 examples of non-sexualized female character.

There was never ever an era in gaming where the majority of female representation was sexualized. It was a revisionist history narrative that only retroactively engendered that perception.
