There Never Was a Switch Pro

Yes, it never existed. Ever. There never was going to be a 4K Switch.

You know why?

"Leakers" and "Journalists" made it up out of an ASSUMPTION.

They saw Nintendo buying up a bunch of OLED screens, and ASSUMED that Nintendo wouldn't be dumb enough to just release a Switch OLED refresh without a spec boost. Ignoring that Nvidia's mobile stuff has been pretty stagnant, these insiders just assumed it would be a more powerful Switch.

But we all fell for it, and we shouldn't have. A huge red flag was NO developers were talking about a Switch boost. We learned about the PS4 Pro from developers, who were talking about the "Neo" devkit at GDC long before the console was announced (and back then GDC was in March). If there really was a Switch Pro, some developer wouldn't leaked it by now.

You fell for it? Why? Just wait for the company to announce its shit. All these twitter leakers lmao dont even pay no mind to none of that shit and your life will be better

Yep, hilarious. It seems that all Nintendo-related rumors are nothing more than industry "insiders" assuming that Nintendo will do what seems like conventional wisdom. Lol, nope, that's one of the best (sometimes annoying, but still best) things about the company--they really don't care about what they're supposed to do.

It reminds me of the early days of the 3DS, when everyone (Kotaku etc) was absolutely certain that a new revision was on the horizon with dual analog sticks. Because they just couldn't fathom the notion that Nintendo's handheld games didn't focus on that standard mode of controls. But as expected: nope, it turns out Nintendo never gave a shit about having a right analog stick for even a single moment in any of the 3ds hardware iterations.

We are all conditioned to believe the better version of anything is on its way. I bet people already want a PS5 Pro or a Series X Pro. Nintendo just gets more attention because their console isn’t exactly top of the line in terms of specs.

This is why you have to keep your expectations in check. These youtubers/influencers are so desperate for clicks that they make up hyperbole BS and things usually never turn out the way they say it would.

Nintendo left the "powerful system" race a long time ago and they have been more successful because of that so I was doubtful about about the Pro rumors from the start.

I never really understood the point of a Switch Pro. I mean the Switch really is a first party machine, and most first party Switch games are 60fps anyway. And would you really notice a higher resolution screen when the screen is that small?.
Yeah sure if you play docked it would help, but isnt that only like 30% of Switch owners or something that play docked anyway?.

it was more than just thinking Nintendo would do the normal thing that anyone expects.

Nintendo patched the firmware to have support for 4K output hidden in the code, which hackers found.

also there were multiple new SKUs listed in the firmware for supported devices.

last but not least, Nintendo is known to release Handheld refreshes with hardware improvements (GameBoy Color, DSi, New 3DS)

so assuming that this OLED Switch will also have boosted hardware performance is not that much of a reach. even if it uses only a refresh of the current X1, it still could run about 2x as fast as it currently does.

the Mariko chip inside the Lite and first refresh model already has the capability to run at way higher clock speeds while running as hot and drawing as much power as the launch model Switch.

if Nvidia improved this chip even further by shrinking it yet again, Nintendo could easily run it at close to 1.4x CPU and 1.8x GPU speed

Counterpoint, there is still a switch pro and it’s coming next year
pretty sure it will be this year..

the 2ds was a thing.
and shortly after we got the new 3ds..

so pretty sure the true switch pro will still come this year

Except when they DID release a more powerful 3DS with a right stick (even if it was a crappy one)?

Not impressed. I didn't understand why so many people was expecting a complete new Switch, which could trigger so many problems for the other consumers and games due abysmal differences.
Nintendo new business model was stablished and upgraded a few years ago. There were a couple of interviews around were you can find a more Apple-like lineup orientation for the company. There is interest and sense in offering different consumer focused hardware with the same environment, and upgrading them every year to make them better (Apple products ring any bell?).
The Nintendo's strategy was exhausting for the company and the consumer, where every few years they were changing the whole environment and hardware system, IMHO.
Actually, I like this new business view.

Like 100 million units sold and ms and sony sit back and don't compete in the handheld market. Maybe Apple or Google will step up with a machine that doesn't suck.

Their competition is Android and iPhone which have sold billions.

And once again the power of (self) suggestion is shown. You can tell people no matter how many times and no matter how convincingly that something isn't true but if they have decided to believe in it (whatever "it" is), they won't listen. Goes to many things in life. I just find it psychologically endlessly interesting how clear it is and how easy it is for people to believe whatever - even when theyare well aware of this human weakness. But I guess they are aware of that weakness existing in other people but not "me". Also interesting is how after they have started to believe in "a thing", everything - no matter how irrelevant - is just a further proof "the thing" exists.

The bolded part is the MOST important part of your post though. It'll be through Nvidia that we'll know if a Switch Pro is being made or not.

You guys obsession with everything "graphics" wanted for Switch "pro" to be real and hyped yourself without any concrete evidence and you have no one but yourself to blame for feeling disappointed.

Mods, he's calling Nintendo dumb. GET HIM!!!

On a serious note, and I am by no means a glass half full kinda guy, but this could mean Nintendo might be working on a next gen Switch 2 that wouldnt be held back by a freaking switch. The RTX 2060 is holding up very well against PS5 and XSX in Doom albeit with DLSS doing most of the heavy lifting so if Nintendo can wait a couple of years to get it down to a smaller form factor then we might have a Switch 2 in 2023 that could run next gen games on a handheld.

Nintendo devs wont be tied to a 0.19 tflops handheld either.

I dunno. I love "leaks" and speculation because it's fun to imagine and theorize. I end up learning a lot from the crosstalk and back and forth between members on message boards, and some of it is even true. Lol. I've just also learned (painfully) not to take anything as certain until it's announced.

And I doubt most of these insiders were straight up inventing their information, though I don't doubt at all that some were adding speculation based on their "expertise." I'm sure that somewhere along the line someone heard something. It's just, with everything being so connected and anonymous, a tiny grain of info can snowball and spread like the world's craziest game of telepone, with two or three sources "confirming" eachother based on the same bad bit of information.

That said, I also think there should be a list or database on "insiders" that rates their reliability. At the very least it should get some of these people to put out more disclaimers saying, "Now, I don't know how reliable this is, so dont quote me, but..."

Well, at least I won't have to buy a 3rd Switch.

I'm guessing Metroid Prime 4 will release on Switch 2 or whatever its successor is. If the hardware is significantly improved, I'm fine waiting- I want it to be the best it can be.

Not really the same thing, but ok. I spent like $100 in games in my life on my phone, probably $2,000+ in dedicated handheld games. So it's not really the same market......

Maybe we were just expecting what any normal company would do. And make something that’s acceptable with most gamers TVs!! Not everyone wants to play on a handheld machine!

Here's the Switch Pro:

Nvidia has made revisions that are faster but nintendo and nvidia won't budge on the price most likely. Nvidia fucks everyone while nintendo also is no stranger to the fuckery.

The first (and only?) time Nintendo talked about a more powerful system was a few years ago, not sure if 2018 or 2019 but I remember it was in January, they said they were considering more powerful technologies but ended up saying something along the lines of "this is something we would see in our next generation hardware". Some people with too much time on their hands interpreted that as a Switch pro. There never was one and Nintendo never even hinted at a more powerful switch.

I'm kinda happy there isn't one tbh. I'm willing to wait a few more years for a proper next gen machine. I would be perfectly ok with this machine not hitting the market before 2024-25. They're doing really well right now. Upgraded models is all they need for the Switch to continue doing well for a few more years.
