Are there any Good Anime Games Actually?

The Naruto shippuuden ultimate ninja storm series of games are pretty great, best anime style adaptation i have seen so far for a show into a game. Fantastic voicework as they used the same actors as the show and they give you the option of subs, the battles are amazing especially when they merge the quick time events in between.

Lost Paradise, a Fist of the Northstar game, is actually really damn solid.

Berserk: Band of the Hawk is as well if you're into musous.

I'm not a huge weeb by any means, but there are most certainly good anime games available, and there have been for decades.

Ask me about my terrible takes on Star Trek characters
There was a Tenchi Muyo SRPG that was kind of amazing on SNES.

Dragon Quests are all amazing

Final Fantasy as a whole is not an "anime game" series though.
Most of them don't even have anime-inspired art styles.
You must be actually insane if you think that.

That's literally not anime. Anime is Japanese animation.
Not only is your example of Seymour not anime, but it's also not even an anime-inspired art style.
A crazy hairstyle is not inherently anime. If that were the case then punk rock & goth subcultures are also anime.

And once again, the majority of Final Fantasy games do not have anime-inspired art styles. So citing Final Fantasy, in general, doesn't make sense.

There are good and bad games. I played Sword Art Online Alicization... the game sucks as you woud expect. Atelier Ryza, while gorgeous, is very simplistic and boring. And I could say the same about Dragon Quest. But, at the same time, Nier Automata is one of the best games I've played in recent years. Idem Code Vein. And Dragon Ball FighterZ rocks. And I liked FFXV. Underrated game. Plus, Bloodstained is dope.

The good/garbage ratio for anime like japanese games hasn't changed since PS1 era and that's great, considering how shitty western games became in the last 2 gens.

Playing Scarlet Nexus has been embarrassing. The characters are generic and shit. The world is full of nonsense. The plot is predictable and pathetically told. Why did I like Japanese games at any point in life I wonder?

Feel like it's been forever since I played a Japanese game that didn't feel embarssing.

Valkryia Chronicles 4 was good, at least the gameplay. the story got really anime, but the supporting cast was still pretty personable and fun. The military didn't feel like after-school anime club at least, like in Scarlet Nexus.

13 Sentinals was a good game, but it's clearly a homage to 90s/80s anime made by older fans of that stuff, aimed at older fans.

Gravity Rush 2 was great but again felt like there was actual imagination in its creation. Didn't sell well, I guess this isn't whatt anime fans want.

Persona 5 was good, probably the only high school-themed anime game that tackles subject matter that borders on relatable. But anime fans also seem to shit on this game.

So are anime games actually good?
What I don't understand is that game...scarlet nexus looks just like code vein, and just like the God eater series to me. It can not be that hard to come up with a decent world and story with varying graphics. None of the characters have any real personality. (it seems)

Trails in the sky is great with well written non-stereotypical characters (for anime game, Not "Disco Elysium well written level").
But with Trails if cold steel it all went to stereotype school anime Drama types of characters. What a pity.

Code Vein is full on Anime like.

Plus there's the added bonus it is a Souls like game for those who enjoy the genre.

I just bought Code Vein during the Steam sale and played a couple of hours. It's actually kind of good? I am not a fan of most animu stuff (I guess it's an original IP?), but this one seems OK.

Overall it's not too bad. It suffers from bad level design and the enemy variety isn't the best.

This thread was created because OP got really pissed off that other people enjoyed Scarlet Nexus, but whatever.

With being said are we talking about games with "anime" aesthetics or games based anime TV show?

If we are talking about just anime aesthetics there are lots of them but it rare to find good game based anime TV shows.

I thought it was pretty good! I've seen worse attempts in the genre. Really enjoyed this one, might go back for the DLC as well!

Games based on existing anime and games that utilise anime or manga inspired art direction are two very different things but as pointed out, this topic was posted by someone who was pissed off that people seemed to be enjoying Scarlet Nexus.

I see people picking on this quite often.
And I get it to a point.

I get put off when I see generic anime look and storylines in games

But
Also I get put off when I see a brownish/greenish gun game typical of the west.
or a fantasy game with elves and orcs talking about the darkness

I bought my copy of Scarlet Nexus the day before it came out and it hasn’t even arrived yet. It isn’t like you can’t turn it off or ignore the game? I’m a couple days late from launch and people act like they were pinching their skin to play the game. I think some people jump the gun with not liking something. It’s like the Mana and Tales games. They take some time to get going. I think that can be said about a lot of anime inspired and non-anime style games. I think the “embarrassing RPG” has always existed. There are some western style games with the same exact embarrassing and generic appeal to them. It’s a matter of accepting the perception of the art. Enjoy what’s being offered to the player. You can take out of different parts of a game and dismiss it entirely due to some generic thought process. As a whole I do not consider the anime style to be bad, but I think it’s misunderstood. It’s poorly showcased to the world. If you’re staring at a poorly made game based off an anime you would wonder why Japan made a life sized replica of a Gundam in Japan? You wouldn’t exactly think all those Shonen Jump games were worth playing either. The characters in those games are iconic and we don’t exactly have that in the west. It’s a very misunderstood and poorly managed market. Both sides can produce high quality work and yet they both can make stuff that’s down right bad. I enjoy a lot of anime based RPGs from the golden era than a lot of the macho RPG stuff today. I’d also say some of my most favorite modern day games are made in Japan.

Some of the Tales games like Phantasia, Eternia, Symphonia, and Verspiria.

Sakura Wars (though if you don't like goofy anime tropes, stay away).

Policenauts.

There's lots of good anime games if you want fun gameplay with nice visuals.

The story though, unless it's some visual novel type thing (like 13 Sentinels or Steins Gate), it gets tricky.
The problem is that most anime sucks and most of these anime inspired games go for the most generic vanilla shounen stuff. With the same generic main characters, the same generic themes, the same generic supporting cast with the same generic tropes, etc.

It's what sells though, so I can't really blame them. Weebs love this shit and are always eager to spend money on it.

This trailer just came out today and it looks pretty good. Might give it a try if the reviews are good:

I personally like Persona 5, but I think it was a game that went to anime instead of the other way around.

It's a CyberConnect2 game, meaning shallow and repetitive gameplay but incredible, balls to the wall cutscenes.

Nier: Automata was awesome, loved it.

But then I also recently beat Code Vein and if cringe could kill I'd be playing this game with my phone out ready to call an ambulance.

The Kill la Kill fighting game was pretty fun. I don't even like fighting games that much, but grabbed it for 10 bucks a few months back.

I'm almost finished with Record of Lodoss War (SNES) and have had a pretty good time with it. Then again, I'm a big fan of the OVA and anime television series. There's a lot of anime-based JRPGs I'm planning to play afterwards: Tenchi Muyo, Dragonball Z, Slayers, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, etc. I can't say these are all great games (haven't played them yet), but at least as a fan of the series they come from I wll have a fun time.

Even aside that there have been some great games based on anime: Ghost In The Shell on PS1, some of the Macross shmups on Super Famicom, etc. And if you're just talking about games with anime-like visual styles and influences, there's Snatcher, Policenauts, Brave Fencer Mushashi, Fear Effect 1 & 2, Dragon Force 1 & 2, Odin's Sphere (and pretty much all Vanillaware games), Guilty Gear series, etc.

I don't know about you OP, but this is the majority with any type of game. Most are pretty standard, and some mediocre at best, then we have a few and far between that exceptional.

Just an example of this:

Of course, there are many titles I'd include here but I'm just too lazy to do it right now.
White Knight Chronicles deserved better.

Felt like this game could have been a successful reoccurring franchise like FF, but unfortunately it didn't.

I wonder what happened :/
