The Last of Us Part I & II - Playstation 5 Remake Graphical Speculation

So it sounds like this is pretty much confirmed (Schreier & GameInformer, as well as Arne Meyer from Naughty Dog themselves).

How crazy are they going to go with this graphically? I would hope that at a minimum we get the E3 2018 gameplay demonstration level of fidelity. Naughty Dog had to tone down the character models substantially for the final game. Sure, it ended up matching the "vision" for the retail product, but it was still considerably lower quality.

I honestly think we will at least get that, plus better environmental lighting/fidelity. It may look insanely better than anyone is expecting if they truly use the PS5's power and SSD. Remember that ND's fidelity is highly based on memory management, so the SSD should be a gamechanger for their engine.

Graphics will be magnificent. What they got out of a base ps4 with Part 2 was already incredible.

Beyond it, you need to consider the rumor is that the remake will be made for PS5 only. Looking at those amazing character models on PS4, I can only imagine how epic that shit is going to look made on PS5.

It will be great and I’ll buy it but I still think it’s completely unnecessary unless they add something that impacts the greater story. If they indeed add something, like a Factions mode that takes place between TLOU and TLOU2 and that serves the greater story a purpose I can see the reason for doing this. Some kind of open world multiplayer that is faction based a la The Division but 10x better. Yeah, that doesn’t sound bad at all.

Edit: Oh, and regarding the graphics... Well, I don’t really think they need much tinkering except for TLOU1. They could remake the first one using assets from TLOU2 and maybe add some flair to them both. Would be a compelling purchase if they include TLOU1 and 2+Factions.

Think of it this way:

Maybe Naughty Dog wasn't ready for full production of their next game. Their employees could waste a lot of time developing stuff that gets thrown out, or they spend a year and remaster TLOU1/2 with next gen PS5 visuals that blow people away. They basically look like next-gen games. It sounds like this is going well beyond TLOU 1 remaster on PS4 which was just a resolution and framerate bump.

I think people will appreciate having next-gen looking leaps sooner on in this generation. This is an easy way to do that and also gets hype for Factions (or maybe it'll all be bundled together).

Sony gets another title that ends up selling multiple millions along with Horizon 2 for the Holiday. Sure, it does suck that the next mainline ND game is probably not going to release until 2024 at the earliest, though.

They could also probably swap the in game character models to the ones used in cutscenes, similiar to how Spider-Man Remastered did.

There’s probably a lot of models used explicitly for close ups, like the weapons and such. All those could be used in game

I would love for Factions 2 to be about the settlement and building of Jackson and the fallout of the firefly’s if it was going to have some level of persistent story telling. Both easy stories to tell and would fit nicely enough on their own without having to worry about continuity.

If the game is a designed from ground up PS5 title then I have no issues with the remake. It's probably my favorite game of all time so wont cry about it getting remade.

However, if it looks like TLOU2, even before the downgrade then meh.

I am playing TLOU2 right now and it already feels dated. the graphics arent as arresting as they used to be, and even the gameplay feels a bit stale.

What? It still looks great! I don’t expect the majority of games to look as good as it looks overall until at least 2-3 years into PS5/XSX-generation, at least in terms of overall consistency in graphics/animation/effects

Edit: I can agree in terms of gameplay in a sense, but when it comes to consistency in graphics it will stand tall for a while, just like the first one did

I played the forest section that was demo'd at the paris game awards last night. it looked spectacular, but every single section after that has been underwhelming. i never liked the aquarium, but the shipyard section with all the containers and the sections leading to the hospital and the skybridge look rather dull. i know the island looks amazing especially when its on fire, but so far Abby's Seattle day 1 and day 2 have been rather underwhelming now that i have played several next gen games like demon souls and returnal.

i know this is blasphemy but i think re8 looks better. its smaller in scope, but i cant deny it looks better. the interiors look better. the outdoor areas look way more atmospheric. i get that its running on ps5 unlike the last of us 2, but if they want to remake the last of us with TLOU2's engine they are gonna need to go the extra mile.

maybe try and match this cg tv spot.

TLOU II isn’t being remade. The original is. I have no idea where the OP is getting the his from. The idea of remaking a game from last year is beyond stupid. ND will be learning and experimenting with the PS5 architecture by remaking the original game.
ND said that they are not done updating the last of us 2. the 60 fps BC patch is the first of many upgrades. my guess is they are talking about the ps5 sku that is bound to come out with factions, and since factions is going to be a cross gen game they are definitely going to be adding some next gen features in there like the dualsense, 3d audio and whatever downgrades they had made from the original e3 gameplay reveal.

There are some parts that are more dull than other, like the first parts of Abbys storyline. When having played through the whole game I’m just amazed by how many different enviroments they manage to look so damn good. It’s so consistent in every nook and cranny of the game.

Demons’s Souls and Returnal are the best looking console games atm, I agree, but the animations and attention to detail in TLOU2 is crazy. I played it the first time on my PS5 after playing Demon’s Souls and when playing TLOU2 I was still blown away thinking ”how the fuck did they make this for hardware that was pretty much lower mid tier in 2013”.

Maybe it’s simply the fact that it’s actually made for PS4 that somewhat skews my impression. It’s to be considered black magic.

The game play was never fresh. ND are always following trends and end up also-rans in terms of game play and mechanics.
sorry, but I cant agree with that. ND has been accused of following trends going back to Uncharted Drake's Fortune when it was called dude raider, but they ended up doing their own thing by focusing on setpieces and agility not seen in third person cover shooters like gears. with the last of us part 1, they did a fantastic job with the enemy A.I making them far more aggressive than uncharted gears and well pretty much every TPS enemy out there. it felt fresh and unlike any other game out there.

they simply took it to the next level with the last of us 2 with better enemy A.I, better shooting mechanics and better melee, and I loved the combat on my first playthrough, but this time around even at 60 fps it just feels like I am going through the motions. I think the mechanics are fine, but the scenarios arent interesting. they shouldve just made a 15 hour game and cut half of these scenes and only went with the best of the best. lots of filler here.

nah, i had the same impression last year. i was blown away by the visuals and just how many different environments they managed to cram in one game. it was my goty.

It goes back way farther than Uncharted, but as far as that series is concerned, it was a horrible knock off of Gears of War spliced with a dumbed down Tomb Raider (ironic considering Tomb Raider copied Naughty Dog's formula). I guess it brought not stakes traversal to the table and style over substance bombast, but I'd hardly call that a feather in the cap in terms of mechanics.

You’re probably more right than some of us want to admit.

I think it’s crazy when people say Gears 5 Hivebusters looks like a proper next gen game(and some say it looks better than Demon’s Souls) so maybe we should be careful about making the same mistake about PS exclusives if we are to be completely honest with ourselves.

For TLOU2 it won’t be transformative. Similar to tlou remastered, they’ll use cutscene quality models during gameplay, improve shadows, add more shadow casting lights, increase the high lod radius, use higher quality shaders during cutscenes and maybe some rt reflections. Checkerboard 4K60.

TLOU1 will be brought up to that same standard. It’ll be a much different experience gameplay and graphics wise from remastered

rumors suggest it’s a remake to take advantage of PS5 power

Only thing I'd disagree with is that Naughty Dog don't use checkerboard res.

I think the TLOU remake for PS5 & Part 2 PS5 version will use same res/fps setup as TLOU remastered on PS4 Pro:

Native 2160p @ 30 Hz or native 1800p @ 60. Maybe some RT shadows or something for the 30 Hz mode.

Also, my guess is the multiplayer game will also be 1800p @60 on PS5, and 1080p / 900p on PS4 Pro / PS4, (30 or 60 Hz on PS4, idk.)

I think only improving lighting on TLOU2 the improvement can be massive. But I think it will be pretty much the same game just with base PS5 stuff (Dual Sense features and way faster loading) with maybe some tweaks in lighting or some textures and that's all. It already looks great. The one that I think will be greatly improved is TLOU1.

Part 2 is still one of the best looking games of all time. Its hard to imagine what they could add to make it look better, seriously with 60 fps now it looks god damn stunning

edit: maybe they can improve shadows and lighting?

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
Graphics wise will definitely trump most of series X exclusive (no joke).

When true "current gen" games take over, PS5 will shine, no BC compatibility comparison anymore : )

When and where did those individuals/entities confirm that remakes are a go?
Still hoping for Last of Us Part II Remastered for PS5 to happen (this far only patched for 60fps-targeted performance)

But Uncharted wasn't supposed to be either of those.

Uncharted 1 is supposed to feel like you're playing a game version of Romancing the Stone or a similar cult classic/B movie. And it feels exactly how it's supposed to feel.

We are talking about the mechanics that ND ripped off, not the pulp fiction that inspired the tone of the narrative.

Do we really need the remakes once we're at 60 fps ? Bring on Part III and do different franchises.

Most of inhaled the same pollen Ethan inhaled. Played RE8 on the highest graphical setting on PC. It doesn’t even come close to TLOU2.

The heavy downgrade on the character models in TLOU2 was the truly heartbreaking aspect of the game all along.

Imagine how much better this game could have been with the 2018 character models (and a decent script).

Apart from the obvious tech stuff, I think they'll replace the models so the characters reflect their tv-series equivalent, i.e. Joel will look like Pedro Pascal.
The iconic look will be gone, but that feels like something Sony would do. Then release the PS5 & PC versions to tie-in with the new series. If it's a hit? It'll boost sales just like The Witcher series did with W3, which sold keeeraazy amounts.
