With regards the UE5 demo where they commented on the nearly 500 statues, all those statues were loaded in even off screen right? hence why they stated the number of Polygons in that room... So there was no culling/scrubbing... This would mean with cache scrubbing and loading in only what the player sees, would mean the demo could have run at a much higher resolution and much higher fps. 🤷‍♂️🤔

4k 60 fps is a gigantic waste of resources. The game isnt exactly a looker. They shouldve focused on making a better looking game at 1440p or 4kcb.
Rest assure it is not native 4k, its going to be dynamic. Disagree that this game is not a looker. It looks great, especially the character model, the texture on her suit is extremely detail, and the environment texure is the best I seen since demon souls.

I do wonder if I look at this sort of thing in a naive or uneducated way. Is there anything that would stop Sony going to, say Capcom, and re-liscensing a game to re-distribute/re-sell it on the new PS4/PS5 store backbone, even if it was an old PS1 game? The PS4 has, if I remember correctly, at least a working PS2 and PSP emulators which aren't turned-on for normal public.

Why are you idiots still talking about graphics quality between Xbox series x and PS5?

I have a PS5 and a Series S and the third party games look almost the exact fcking same. Stop console warring about 5-10℅ graphics difference or zoomed in games like virgins and talk about first party games and studios instead. 🤷🏻‍♂️

One thing i dont understand about MS's current strategy is that no doubt most of these subs are on Xbox one and PC. So what happens when these next gen only games like avowed and fable start to drop and xbox series S/X hardware is till sitting at 10-15 million units sold 3 years into the generation? Does xcloud run the game for xbox one owners? Doesnt that sort of defeat the purpose of "12 teraflops," which raises the question, why have the series S/X in the first place?

PS+ subs up 22% to 47 million. That's $2.8 billion at $60 a pop.
Gamepass subs up from 10 million to 23 million since last April. Clearly it's not all $1 subs like me. At $10 a pop, that's $230 million in subs every month.

This to me explains how MS was able to get Outriders and MLB in the same month. They have a lot of cash to hand out every month. I think they can easily afford RE8. If they hit 30 million by november, they can afford to pay EA $300 million for BF6. I highly doubt EA would say no to 5 million in guaranteed sales on day one. Especially on xbox which usually has the third best sales after PS and PC. Of course, MS might not want to break even, but I think they can afford to go all Netflix, say fuck you to profits and buy big name stuff like this.

And I hate to say it, but I am beginning to do a 180 on the idea of Gamepass. I used to think that content quantity might hurt quality, but now after seeing how easy it is to make hundreds of millions a month, I think this might convince Sony and other publishers to greenlight profitable but not record shattering games like Days Gone. If they are guaranteed $250-500 million every month, who cares if it sells 5 million or 10 million?

Lastly, Sony now has fuck you money too so we might start to see them pay out publishers to stop games from going to gamepass. Forget timed exclusives or marketing deals, this is where most of the money will be spent going forward.

Yes, you have the option to stream or to get a new console. No it doesn't undermine the purpose of 12 teraflops, the same way that a game running on 2060 doesn't undermine the 3080.

Xbox is betting the farm on gamepass. 230 million a month isnt that great when you consider:
-We dont know how many subscribers are 10 dollar suscribers in stead of 1 dollar
-First and third party software sales have collapsed except for minecraft,
-No doubt series S/X lose money
-Xbox Gold now has one less incentive to subscribe now that theyve let free to play games actually be free
-Paying third parties for gamepass content, especially day 1
-Cost of marketing
-Cost of signing deals
-Plus all the acquisitions and paying the thousands of developers they now employ.

MS has actually shifted to the subscription model for pretty much everything. All their MS office contracts with businesses are subscription based. If you want MS word and Excel, you now have to buy their yearly sub at $69. I remember thinking $120 back in the mid 2000s was expensive, but now they want you to renew it every year lol

And Netflix didnt make any profit for over a decade and only just started posting profits, and they seem to be doing fine. this is a long term investment. Netflix now has 200 million subscribers, and they are still investing $19 billion in programming for 2021. Their revenue was in 2020 was $25 billion. You have to continue to invest in order to keep people from switching to other services. Which is good for the industry.

Both MS and Sony will have to spend hundreds of millions every month to fill their services with content and like Netflix they will eventually realize that original programming costs far less than getting third party content.

Microsoft's gaming revenue is somewhere around $12-13 billion. It was posted just yesterday. They are doing fine considering they are dead last in sales. Nintendo was at $15 billion despite all the record breaking sales of switch.

I used to think a lot of those subs were $1 subs since I have personally always only used the $1 deals to subscribe, but those numbers keep increasing every few months. It went from 10 million last April to 15 million in September to 18 million at the end of last year and now 23 million. If most of them were $1 subs, they would not have retained those guys and the numbers wouldve dropped instead of literally doubling.

Gamepass is just one revenue stream for them, and it pays for itself. TLOU2 was the best debut Sony exclusive ever with $240 million in revenue in just one weekend. MS makes that much every month from Gamepass alone with no exclusives whatsoever. They still have around 20 million XBL Gold subs, they still sell games on their digital store, and looking at the revenue almost matching Nintendo's, you have to think their engagement numbers are really high. Turns out those 50 million xbox owners actually do spend a lot of money.

Besides, it's not about where you are now. Netflix isnt happy with 200 million subs. Disney isnt happy with 100 million subs. If MS is smart, they wont stop investing and losing money on gamepass until they hit 100 million. thats a billion dollars in revenue every month. you could buy a GTA game with that much money EVERY MONTH.

Phil said long ago that gamepass sustainable as a business.

you would enjoy life a bit more if you didn't worry so much about products you don't like. get comfy and enjoy a game bud!

a billion plus mtx money which is typically 40% of the big 2 revenue; that's the game microsoft are playing.

I mean HBO Max and WB are basically doing that and they are gutting not just the billion dollars they make from the box office but also the dvd and tv rights sales. Again, this is pretty much a business practice being adopted by everyone in the entertainment industry. Even iTunes now lets you listen to any piece of music for a $10 monthly sub.

This must be the end game.

No, the whole point of the demo was to showcase Nanite (and lumen). Nanite is the reason why they could have 500 statues in the room and maintain that level of performance. So there was definitely culling and scrubbing as the demo was built to demonstrate Nanite running in real-time on the PS5.

That said, Epic has mentioned they've since improved the demos performance to 60fps iirc.



I love the new visual representations they've used to depict the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Sexy stuff, pocketing some ideas for a project I'm working on.

I like this. But I would say movies, videos, and anime should be marketed towards the casuals. That market is huge. Sony should separate their streaming strategy from their more gamer-centered strategy. But I'll take this for now.
My expectation is that this is just free for a year during the roll out to PS Plus Members.. then the service will be something separate, and Video Pass w/ be an optional add-on, but also available separately.

It doesn't completely stop spending though.. lots of heavy microtransaction games.. games are only temporary and leave and need to be bought if you want to keep playing, don't include many new 3rd party games so those still sell well and MS pockets the %30 cut.

But totally agreed on the lofty goal. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it never eclipses 50 million.. and it will be way under MS's goals.. and Xbox will be sold off. Next decade will be interesting as I think they'll give it some time, but I don't think it's all going to work out. Not that it can't be profitable, but it's not the scale MS thinks it will grow too.
