Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 will suport 1440p@120FPS on Xbox Series X / 1080p@120FPS on PS5 / 4K@60FPS on both

I expect the series x to drop more frames, it’s pushing a significantly higher resolution but this is one case where i own it on Xbox already and I have vrr so I would much prefer the higher resolution. as long as I’m getting 90 to 120 with vrr it will be perfect. The problem for me is, if I had it on ps5 and it even drops a handful of frames I’d still feel it....man I hope my ps5 gets vrr soon. It’s been nearly 6 month from launch.

Rendering =/= output, so that's not the reason.

And it's equally stupid to think that PS5 couldn't do 1440p 120Hz when XSX can. We have seen both consoles are a match. Especially in 120 FPS modes, PS5 has performed much better, i.e., Dirt 5, COD, DMC5, Destiny, etc.

I think in the end we will likely see one of the three following reasons:
  • PS4 Pro didn't support 1440p resolution, so devs just used the 1080p version on PS5 like Avengers to minimize their work and optimization.
  • Sony is prioritizing frame rates over resolution and asking developers to hit a locked 60 and compromise on the resolution instead. Perhaps MS is asking devs to prioritize resolution (their marketing campaigns have been about 4K and resolution) and compromising on frame rates if needed.
  • Both consoles have a dynamic resolution scaler. And both consoles will end up producing similar results, with XSX sometimes hitting >1080p resolution (because of no limits) and PS5 performing better at 60 FPS (because of the resolution cap).

If you're getting 60fps at 4K, then you're going to get a frame-rate increase at 1440p.
True, but the ability to hit 1440p@120fps is both GPU and CPU heavy for most games. Just because you can output 4K@60fps doesn't mean you can achieve double frame-rate for 1440p. Regardless of whether or not it makes sense to include such a mode in PS5, the argument still stands that the hardware may not be up to the task.

Just so people are aware. PS5 can absolutely internally output resolutions of 1440p. Take Demons Souls for example, that game looks glorious at 1440p and 60 FPS. I wouldn't play it any other way. 1080p will look considerably softer on a 4k panel though. This is one instance where I dont think framerate will win out, Unless it is locked 120FPS on ps5 and like drops to 90 fps on xbox. The image will be so much cleaner on XBox over PS5 in this case.

Yes, and we know the reason why. It's the old-gen resolution settings on both consoles.

If not, why is Series S using a native resolution and not a higher CB res? Also, why is there no difference in XSX favor in Avengers quality mode and now Tony Hawk?

Absolutely not. And many have explained to you that the ps5 shouldn't drop a single frame to be true what you say. But it does.Probavly 1440@120 is more demanding than 4k@60

But the quality mode in Avengers on Series X is higher resolution than PS5, the PS5 drops res and the Xbox stays at Native full fat 4k in those scenes?

You do know the Xbox is Statistically more powerful than the PS5 right? Like it's no secret. It has a wider GPU with more CUs as well. Which if you know anything about PC GPUs is what makes a GPU like a 2080 Ti better than a 2080 at higher reoslutions. Or take a 6800 vs a 6700 XT at resolutions of 1440p and above. It's just the way these things work.

No, I actually explained to you with an example and numbers why it may not be a locked 60, and it has nothing to do with overhead. But you ignored that response altogether and abandoned that conversation.

But statistics do not always translate to real-world performances, especially in a closed-box console with many variable factors involved, and we already have data for it.

Am I willing to accept that in some games XSX will outperform PS5? Yes, absolutely it will.
But then in other games PS5 will outperform XSX, because this is the closest the two consoles have ever been, and the difference, if any, is extremely close.

Right now, the mindset is that if PS5 outperforms XSX, it is because of a fluke, lazy devs, new tools, etc. But if XSX outperforms PS5, it is the wider GPU and tower of power. That thought process is stupid and needs to go.

P.S. And XSX's GPU has a statistical advantage in being wider with more CUs. PS5's GPU has a statistical advantage in operating faster, having a higher pixel fill rate, faster rasterization, etc. It's not as black and white.

No, both consoles hit and 2160p and stay there most of the time.

Edit: Source (VG Tech): "In quality mode, the resolution seems to rarely drop below the maximum resolution found on all three consoles."

The console supports rendering at 1440p but the output will be scaled to what you set it at and it will upscale or downscale depending on that
Again...nope. Its not 1440p diaplayed as 1080p...
It displays 1080p because the game runs internally at 1080p.
Games like CoD or DMC run 120fps modes on PS5 with higher resolution than 1080p so clearly PS5 supports resolutions above 1080p@120.

Its about what they are targeting.

The game gets around 120fps on a GTX 1060.

The GPU is much weaker than what's found on the PlayStation 5, yet you're still getting 110-140fps

The PlayStation 5 doesn't support 1440p @ 120hz and they're probably targeting 1440p displays and the PlayStation 5 doesn't support it natively. It will output at 1080p.

Will be interesting in a years time when games are being built exclusively on the next gen systems if there is still such a difference.

To be honest, if they are both 4k/60, i dont know why PS5 wouldnt be able to match the same 1440p/60 as requirements for both modes should be pretty similar on paper.

This whole PS5 not supporting 1440p is so bizaare to me. Most gpu's can handle pretty much any resolution from 720p-4k, even really weird resolutions. What actually is it thats stopping 1440p on PS5?

EDIT. we have had games with dynamic rez that have ranges including 1440p on PS5, so yeah i dont get this whole 'it cant output 1440p' thing.
Because the Series X is a more powerful system, its not a surprise to anyone with a reasonable understanding of gaming hardware. PS5 has no 1440p display output, but it has no problem displaying a 1440p image.

I literally completely forgot I bought the delayed edition.
I downloaded the 5GB update for the main game, ran it, and saw nothing in the display settings for 4K 60.
Then it took way longer than it should have to figure out how to download the XSX version that I already owned. But I figured it out.
Now we wait. (For the 20GB download)

RE8 uses reconstruction 4k not checkerboard on PS5 demo that is almost exactly the same as DMC 5 on XSX and PS5 in it’s native 4k mode. Avangers uses checkerboard on PS5 but on XSX it is DRS with lower resolution on XSX. Tony Hawks is 1080p because PS5 doesn’t support 1440p that’s why both consoles are same resolution in 60 FPS mode.

Also are we forgetting AC Valhalla XSX 1188p vs PS5 1440p lowest bound resolution or Immortals Fenyx Rising Dynamic 4k vs Native 4k.
Now give each of those games a bit longer in the oven, and I would bet that things you just mentioned wouldn’t exist.

It was clear around launch that the series games were rushed for release

GTX 1060
4K: 57-66fps
1440p: 87fps - 113fps
1080: 147fps - 186fps

A GTX 1060 is comparable to a Xbox One X from last gen. This game is not very demanding

eh without a doubt .. later in tech analysis we will see if 120fps are stable or not ... showing a 1060 that reaches 87fps does not help. And if you notice you will see that 4k @ 60 seem less heavy than 1440 @ 120 even on a 1060

I completely agree in some case, but it is a fact that the Xbox has a more powerful GPU. Yes there will be games that translate to a narrower faster approach and I expect they will perform better at resolutions of 1440p and below. But a Wider CU count is what makes games perform better at higher resolutions more times than not.

I think it can be taken for a fact that the tools werent ready for the xbox, they started manufacturing consoles later than Sony. They were behind Sony in many ways. I've seen and heard enough comments from developers that actually work on these machines to believe that.

Like you said though, there will definitely be situations where the PS5 performs better. It shouldn't at anything 1440P or above, but I am sure we will see some situations. It may just be that the developers prioritise the PS5 version due to the sales of the console or any other reason, but factually the xbox should always out perform the PS5 at higher resolutions if the games is coded to it's strengths.
No, both consoles hit and 2160p and stay there most of the time.

What I saw is the ps5 version drops resolution where the xbox doesn't. That is evidence that the xbox is outperforming it, even if it's a tiny drop on PS5 and none on the xbox it's handling the game at 4k better.

I try to be as straight down the middle as I can be. I am a PC owner with a 3080 but I genuinely love consoles, I love Sony's first party output. I love Xbox GamePass and their exclusives too. I am only trying to speak facts here. I bought a 3080 over buying a 3070 and overclocking it because I want higher performance at higher resolutions, thats something that a wider GPU brings at lower clocks.

Demons souls is 1440p and 60 FPS this has nothing to do with what outputs the PS5 supports. The PS5 absolutely can render games internally at 1440p and output scaled to 4k.

Ps5 has been displaying games at 1440p & pushing 120fps better than SX since launch, more powerful is a meme.

Just played the game, 4K mode looks razor Sharp, Reflections & Shadows were boosted too, audio significantly improved.

Can't test the 120fps mode, 4K looks very good not sure if Native or not kinda hard to tell these days with TAA & Motion Blur & all that stuff.

Rock solid 60 though.

We see Xbox games with constant resolution advantages on a frequent basis now as we should, it's just more powerful.

I see a lot of people claiming that PS5 doesn't support 1440p, and yet it's exclusives like DS or SM:MM do render in 1440p... I think it's save to say the game will be further updated for the newer consoles later on.

Anyway, nice upgrade on both. PS5 version should provide better gameplay experience with haptics and adaptive triggers. Reading it works quite well.

and we know exactly why it was performing better the only problem was that many didn't want to accept what everyone including the devs was saying.
ps. with that i'm not saying that there will be no more games that perform better on ps5. there will still be some but they will be increasingly rare

What devs? No dev has ever really confirmed this rumor. And those other titles like Cold War, DMC and Dirt are more demanding then this title at 120fps.

PlayStation 5 doesn't support 1440p @ 120hz, It supports 1080p @ 120hz.

If you're running Tony Hawk at 120hz 1440p on the PlayStation 5, it will display at 1080p 120hz. This is the likely cause of the game running at 1080p because the PlayStation 5 doesn't support 120hz\1440p.

It works with Spider-Man and Demon Souls because the TV does support 1440p and it will upscale to 4K at 60fps.

PS5 should support 4k@120hz

God help me, but Riky Riky is correct, the XseX is indeed more powerful, honestly I would expect this to become the norm... a resolution/FPS advantage/...

however the fact it took so long (spare me the tools excuse) and the fact that the XseX is still tied to the significantly weaker XseS, says something about the engineering on the V, and brings doubt on whether or not MS will take true advantage of all the beef under the XseX' shell.

Honestly the diehards (both sides BTW) should get over it and accept the fact that MS' console IS more powerful, but that we will likely not see any major advantages other than FPS and Res leads (no Box vs PS2 scenarios)

V vkbest , they still might, don't forget patches are a thing, Morales now has performance and raytracing...so always a possibility
