Australia urged to move on from ‘moral panic’ over video games after Disco Elysium banned

Australia is a strange place, it seems like the people are so relaxed, but the government and people in authority are uptight. Every travelling Aussie I've met in my life was a really non-judgemental, relaxed person but most of the censorship I read about seems not well-thought out, or its coming from people who have never played a game before and don't really get the Player -> Player Character connection, like how its completely different across varying genres.

They think acting in a game is always roleplay when I don't think most people treat games like that. The player shouting at the player character and calling them an idiot is common with streamer so that makes me think those people treat the PC as an avatar of themselves, but not actually them. I think there are moments of players declaring themselves to actually be the character after moments of great victory, but its unclear if they mean "I did that" or "I made that happen", as in controlling the character externally.

Maybe if you inhabit the same PC long enough you might get attached in that way naturally due to muscle memory taking over almost fully.

I can see the censoring for children but adults? I bet Australians are saying to themselves “USA looks really good right now”.

Australia is a real-life NES game where everything wants to kill you. In a land with more venomous snakes per square foot than anywhere else; swarms of deadly spiders roaming the streets and countryside; water filled to the brim with sharks, crocodiles, angry jellies, and venomous fish; where if you take a wrong turn while running away from a pack of giant murder ants and bump into the wrong plant it'll make you commit suicide... the most dangerous threat is a dialog-tree video game without combat.

Imagine linking CNN...

I live in Texas, and life is pretty great right now. Got my second shot of the vaccine and ready to party this summer.

You are much more likely to die in a car accident this year than die in a mass shooting event, of which CNN has made up the definition for.

USA isn't what a lot of you NPC simpletons that spew left wing garbage seem to think it is.

NPC simpleton spewing garbage? Censorship here is retarded and most people don't support it. I linked a news article and mentioned the covid situation in USA, poorly and jokingly invalidating that other idiots reasoning.
To label someone an NPC simpleton leftist for mentioning current events and reality is as left retarded as you can get. I'll leave and let your safe space prosper.

Super seducer 3 was just removed from Steam, it's not quite the bastion of liberty people make it out to be IMO.

An inexplicit drop in the ocean of porn games, the point wasn't about Steam specifically, it was about how Jack Thompson in absolutely no way "won"

Pretty much everyone in Australia has some kind of VPN set up to be able to buy stuff from either the US or Europe. I never change my PSN or Steam store when I'm out there. Australia's entire entertainment industry is fucking retarded in nearly every single measure.

Most of those are quite a stretch to call a "mass shooting". But I'm not really surprised. Friendly reminder that someone committing suicide in a parked car outside a closed school at night was once trumped up by the media as a "school shooting".

The driest AP news source possible, devoid of any opinion or "fact making".

I am a political moderate btw, so nice kneejerk reaction. Typical of a an NPC like yourself though :D.
I'm not familiar with this whole NPC gimmick of yours. I guess it means you think people aren't really people? How right wing of you lol.

Also, just because you call yourself a moderate doesn't make you one. Moderates don't knee jerk hate CNN.

K, so I should let you label me instead? Aren't you people really against that or something?!?!

I know progressives that knee jerk hate CNN...guess they are Right Wing too.

Letter avatar...hmmm....yeah, welcome to ignore!

Is there such a restriction on film?
Like is Narcos about a Columbian shot for no reason?

I am serious about asking whether scenes where people snort coke are censored in Australia.

Do note I googled 'Mass Shooting USA" got CNN clickbait, lol'd and used it as a simple way of dismissing some silly opinion on a crucial reason why Australians don't want to be like USA. I even typed '"lol" because CNN low quality and hoped it would trigger people. I know you aren't dodging bullets left and right and some guy is even preparing to party in Texas. It was a simple comment on a gaming forum not an attack on anyones livelihood. That guy took the bait and got triggered though :messenger_tears_of_joy: Then he goes on to call me a leftist. Certified retard. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Bro my folks want me to move there and the above always goes through my mind. Life is good in Australia compared to New Zealand but fuck me does the government ban everything north of a PG13 rating.
My dad told me he once left his garage door open at night when he went to the store. Came back and was panic stricken cause he dunno if any snakes or other shit made its way into the house.
Slept with a locked bedroom door for a week.

Man FUCK Aussie.

Australia is the the alternate world where Jack Thompson was successful against GTA
Well the states aren't free of this nonsense either. We have a democrat rep in illinois calling for banning GTA V due to rise in Car jackings. A game from a decade ago now. These people are authoritarin wackos.

I get rating systems and protecting kids from violence, smut/porn and bad influences, as their minds are like sponges, but damn let adults see what they want, as long as no one is getting hurt, age bracket it.

I still think the likes of Sarkesian is worse as mainstream media and game journos agree and champion her and bad mouth gamers. At least they were on board with Jack thompson.

Wait, what's wrong with NZ? I thought it's beautiful and idyllic? Is it the earthquakes?

I'd be afraid putting on my slippers every morning in aus.
Nah NZ is awesome. It's just Aussie life is a bit better. You earn more and things are less expensive. Not a massive difference but yeah it's just better in Aussie.

But yeah you're right NZ is just fucking beautiful man. I'm going down to Queenstown tomorrow for my birthday. Adventure capital of the world. Love that fucking place.

I'm pretty sure the point was not the danger of dying in a mass shooting but the culture of America and the mental state it's in.

I'm Australian living in Australia, my beliefs are conservative, I'm pro gun, I have guns. But the US has a lot of serious issues going on.. That's a fact.

Not really, the censors there deem those as 'adult' things, where gaming is still seen as a 'kiddie' thing.

We here in New Zealand are currently a bit grumbly at Australia (primarily that bozo Scomo the PM) due to being shipped a bunch of garbage humans (deportations) who are really Aussies....so when dumb shit like this happens, it's hard not to face palm hard at Aus as a whole.

But I digress, I love Australia really, but yeah: your rules are ridiculous and a laughing stock.

The inadequate few who grasp for power in Australia are usually those who prescribe to US-style evangelical Christianity and are generally cultural contrarians who are on the right-side of the political spectrum and the wrong side of everything else. However, even Australia's right are left of the US Democrats, amusingly.
