Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

The Atelier games are weird for me. I always get excited to play a new one but always burn out before finishing them. Sophie is the last one I finished.

And yet, another $60 goes to KT.

I would absolutely recommend finishing the first Atelier Ryza game before diving into this one, as it's a direct sequel. I understand that's a bit of a departure for this series.

I played one of the Atelier PS2 games back in the day but I never stuck with it. I dove head-first into the first Ryza game and found it to be absolutely lovely. I'm really looking forward to playing this when it releases tomorrow.

I'm the same, I get entranced by the art & music and keep trying them. Took me a while to realise I'd rather just listen to the soundtracks on YouTube than actually play the games. :pie_invert:

I've been looking forward to this releasing because it's on my wishlist on Steam and it's somehow constantly listed under "on sale" filters despite neither being "on sale" or even "for sale". Wonder what magic algorithm they've used to get that status for like a year now.

Anyway, the game looks fun. I enjoyed the last one.

I really enjoyed Atelier Iris. Just when you thought the game was over, there was another mission to take on.

Haven't played much of the franchise since, but I am curious on the Ryza series.

I really, REALLY enjoyed the first one
Same here. In fact, I just went back and re-watched the trailers for this and it's like a huge nostalgia wave hit me even though the first game isn't that old.

It's like it reminded me of a time when things were better, before the worldwide pandemic.

Should arrive this week. Hopefully the collectors edition includes some of that additional content. Not liking this series getting on the season pass bandwagon.

True. I'd jump into the first one, but its still full price. Come on now.
I've seen it on sale a few times at $47.99 (20% off). I guess it was 40% off during the Steam Summer Sale last year, but it didn't go that low again during the fall or winter sales. Was also $36 on Switch in September.

So hopefully it'll get a sale but I wouldn't hold my breath for a deep cut.

Ohhh, sorry, I meant PS4.

Well, I'll wait for a sale.

I'm not really ready to jump into this game at full price just yet.

so the switch version is going to look extremely bad, correct?
Not really, these games are not really known to have high tech graphics. The original game looked pretty good on Switch and I’m sure it’s gonna be same with 2nd game.

Finished the sequel a few days ago, its very much more of the first game. Same combat, same crafting, same sort of quests. They unlock things in a bit of a different order which gives you the impression some of the mechanics have changed or may unfold differently, but by the end it's pretty much the same game except for a few minor nips and tucks

Combat is more chaotic, it's harder to tell who is being targeted now so they reward you for defending just in time which helps build AP, not sure if I prefer or dislike this change to be honest, it doesn't make a big difference in the grand scheme of things.

It's easier to recover health now within and outside of combat which makes adventuring a bit less risk vs reward when you are pushing to reach a new zone, but bosses do seem a bit harder to balance it out through. But similar to the first game it's generally on the easy side until the post game stuff.

Swimming and rideable creatures are new in this one, both are neat but neither are ground breaking. Rideable creatures are not all that useful due to how quick fast travel is, and swimming only really serves as a new excuse for staring at ryzas arse.

Characters and story are all great, but only a couple of new faces which is a let down, heavy focus on returning cast from the original. No real attempt to explain why your skills and power levels are all reset, so feels weird going back to nothing and having to learn the same recipes again etc. They should have done all new enemies and recipes to avoid the "how did she forget how to make fucking paper?" plot hole.

Lots of side stuff and post game stuff again, music is decent even if it reuses some tunes from the original.

Exploration has a mini game where you have to solve the plot by filling in blanks with clues found by exploring, but you can't complete the dungeon without all the clues so it's really just a way to make sure you go everywhere, fair enough I suppose.

Graphically it's the same, 1080/30 on PS4 and still no anti aliasing!! So essentially a higher res switch game with the same assets. It has some new shader effects, and characters appear slightly cell shaded now. It also has improved dynamic lighting and weather, and yes, wet t-shirts. but still, the PS4 Pro is sleeping when playing this, there is no reason this shouldn't be 4k60 other than lack of effort in the port up from switch.

There is a weird reflection and shadow system it uses from time to time, almost like software ray tracing, but it's so low resolution it's hard to tell exactly, my guess is they crank it up on PS5 to have full day traced shadows and reflections perhaps.

My only genuine dislikes are the stupid fucking sidekick pet which escaped puyo puyo tetris, and how they spoil who the returning and new cast are in the opening video.

So basically if you want more Ryza you'll love it, but if you've not played the original get that for cheaper instead.

My Premium Edition showed up. I was not expecting it today. It has a lot of nice physical items, like a large art book. Previous limited editions came in nice small boxes (5"x7") that fit nice on the shelf. This premium edition is huge (9"x12") and I am not sure where I will have room for it. The only additional game content is a single costume "Sonnet of Dawn", which does not look as good as the default costume. Kind of disappointing for the price. Would have been nice to have included more digital content with the so called Premium Edition.

Thanks for the writeup, this sounds like exactly the game I want.

Here in Euroland you can grab old Atelier games for €30 from Amazon. Not cheap but it beats the ridiculous prices KT has on the PlayStation Store. And KT doesn't like sales...

Got the first one for Christmas in 19 from Santa and spent every night for two weeks playing it. At that time, we got hit with a snowstorm. Going to work in the snow, all the dreary weather, the dark nights, and being able to spend a few hours every night with Ryza and the gang, exploring Kurken Island and enjoying the summer weather in the game was one of the few highlights from last winter. With the whole pandemic going on, and being an “essential worker” with 40 hours a week, I’m really looking forward to escaping to this world a few hours a night for the next couple weeks.

I'm still conflicted as to what system to play this on. Seem to be playing a lot of my time these days on the Switch, but a bit worried about performance and visuals if anyone can chime in.

Can anyone who's played on Switch comment on how well it runs in handheld mode?

I played the first game completely in handheld mode on the Switch, and it ran just fine. However, the graphics are obviously a downgrade over the PS4 version of the game. I can only imagine the situation with this game and it's PS5 version will be much worse. So if you're a massive graphics whore I'd probably stay away. If you're like me and you're really just interested in the gameplay and the story, then the Switch would be just fine.

The previous game ran okay on the switch, and this is the same engine with no graphical upgrades - so go for it, PS4 version isn't a massive improvement as it's locked at 30fps 1080p with no anti-aliasing, just like the first game. So most of that processing power is just going to waste anyway.

How do you download the timed costumes off the eshop? I don’t see a way to claim it.

edit* never mind. It showed up when I exited out and went back in.

I personally love visuals on this game but they are no mean graphical power house or anything, they look fine either on Switch or PS4/PS5.

The first game looked damn good on switch and what I’ve played of this one it continues the trend. The PS versions obviously run at higher resolution and has less pop-in, more foliage, etc... But it’s simple art style allows the game to look and run very well on switch.

Plus the switch version is likely to be the more rare of the two just like the first game.

So if I buy the physical copy, I still need to buy the ultimate edition to get all the costumes?
Unless the content is eventually sold seperately, for all the costumes and accessories, it does appear you'd need the physical copy (two t-shirt costumes) and the Ultimate Edition (an exclusive-Ryza outfit & straw hat accessory).

My copy came in from GameStop but didn’t have a preorder DLC code :(

Edit: looks like I got an email with the code after making this post. Website said it was going to come in the package.

Ryza was the first Atelier I played and loved. I tried after Rorona, but the time limit didn’t click with me. Anyway I preordered this game, I expect this will run at 60fps on PS5, but I can’t trust on console ports from Gust

Anyone playing on PS5? Seems to have a decent frame stutter. PS5 can’t handle Ryza?!
My copy is coming tomorrow, so I have to see it myself when I get my copy. I heard the new PS5 update let you choose between PS4 and PS5 version, can you do that with this game?

The disc is PS4 so when you pop it in it installs that. There’s an icon for a free PS5 upgrade then which installs the PS5 version. So it installs both as separate installs. I uninstalled the PS4 version after.

Im wondering if the PS4 version wont have those stutter issues you mentioned.
