Ryan McCaffrey on Unlocked: There is nothing here (XSX launch lineup) that says I need to spend $500 dollars on XSX. Launch games

Do you find the Xbox Series S|X launch lineup disappointing?

I was surprised by this opinion coming from him. He has always been very hyped about all things Xbox.

While he is an Xbox fan, he isnt a liar and he finally has a pretty decent gaming computer.

The Series X|S only has Gears Tactics as a nextgen launch title.
Everything else is crossgen making it very hard convince me/anyone to put out that cash.

Both machines are having a hard time actually convincing people to buy them.
Most of the people I know buying early are literally doing it just because its the new Xbox/Playstation.....theres no game they are particularly excited for, its just the console itself thats the hype.
And I get that, new thing hype is always nice, we have been raised as consumers, all we do is buy.........but realistically this is a pretty damn weak start to a generation considering how powerful these consoles actually are.

Literally if this generation started a year later November 2021 we would be swimming in pussy!

I played Demons Souls 10 years ago. It has new paint, a faster load time and it’s being resold for $70 plus tax. If it was a Microsoft exclusive, it would have been backwards compatible w/ updated assets years ago. Miles Morales is available on the PS4 and then there is GodFall... There’s One game in this lineup that you NEED a PS5 for (GodFall :/ ). If you early adopt (XBX + PS5 day 1) you’re not getting the systems for the games on launch, you’re getting the systems because you want the latest tech. There’s almost no reason to justify your $500 purchase with either systems launch line up unless your being a fanboy.

There's a reason no one, including MS, has ever launched a new generation console without software showing at least some early version of what it can do.

MS just really screwed up their scheduling.
It kind of explains Series S/X marketing strategy. Early communication and maximum hardware transparency. All to cover up their immature dev tools and substandard launch lineup.

PS5 has both bases covered. Series X/S doesn't. Don't you guys get it?

You're spending $500 on a Game pass console with nothing on offer that takes real advantage of the new hardware. That's a tough sell to everyone but the hard core Xbox crowd.
Only that 30 games have already been enhanced for Xbox Series S|X compared to Xbox One...

Also who cares that these games can already be played on Xbox One? I've never played Forza Horizon 4, for me this is basically an exclusive launch title. Maybe due to his position he has basically played every decent Xbox game, but he's an outlier in this regard.

Demon's Souls has new content. So far new items are confirmed, there is hope for a way to restore the broken archstone (if they had the trouble to make new rings, shields, armors, etc, it's quite possible that they completed the Land of Giants, that was half done in the original).

(calling it new paint is basically trolling considering the extent of the remake...)

Genuinely surprised to hear him being honest about Xbox's horrible launch lineup. Come to think of it, this is the second time in 2020 that he's commented on Xbox's launch games -- or lack thereof.

Supporting oldass games is neat, but your new console can't rely on nostalgia. You need new stuff for your new thing. Sales will be strong at launch, but if the millions of people who buy your console find themselves with nothing new to play not even a month after launch then you've got a real problem on your hands.

February and March will be key. Sony will be continuing their onslaught with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and/or Returnal. People will look at gamers on the other side having fun, excited, driving the news and naturally want to feel that too. Some will no doubt switch or at the very least get a PS5.

Series X will no doubt have the worst 1st party launch in history because you don't do any worse than zero.

That said, it does have the promise of better 3rd party performance which is a pretty huge deal. If COD and AC perform better in it then I'm getting one.

Series S can't run games that would say you need to spend $500 on a Series X. If it's not 1080p-1440p on S, it ain't getting made. Anything that's 1080p-1440p on an S isn't going to be worth showing off.

PS5 is well covered on both bases IMO, and it's unfair to minimise Sony making games like DS exclusive to PS5.

That said, Xbox goes in a different direction leaning on Game Pass, which I feel too many act like it somehow isn't the best deal in gaming
I'm on PC exclusively, but I think gamepass is the shit! I'd much rather have a plethora of games and countless hours, than to play a single player game. That's just my honest opinion though

what ps5 launch games exclusive? as in not cross gen

Does he only play exclusives and never plays 3rd party titles?

If we dont count backlog/friends, there is no reason to get console that gets zero exclusives for 3rd party games, when there is also console that gets exclusives + same 3rd party games.

And yet, cant pick a Series X up anywhere!

PS5 sold out in minutes globally, xbox s/x (launch units) took weeks to be sold out globally and it is still available for november-december on multiple European countries. I could get one on early december, friend on another country could get it still for launch.

So, xbox launch sales are clearly not on the same level as ps5, assuming both have about the same amount to sell.

Xboxs problem is that it still tries to sell inself "only" by gears, halo, forza.(which are not interesting games universally) And now they dont have exclusives, everything goes to PC so they lose even more audience. And by losing console exclusives, they lose part of the performance, because games wont be done only to one powerfull system, they spread their budget to multiple platforms which includes slow PCs and slow S.

No wonder those feel betrayed whom would want just games tailored ground up for their 500€ box without compromises.

If all PS5 games would come to PC, I would be pissed too

Amd gamepass isnt for everyone. All my friends have basically laughed how "stupid tv-shop level scam deal it is", aka sell tons of shit you dont need with monthly payment to make it look cheap, while it costs tons in years.

Quality over quantity

Exactly.

If (and this is a big if due to COVID) the 2021 games come out as scheduled in 2021, then the Series X will be in an even worse position. While Halo: Infinite could turn out great, you need more than 1 game to make your console worth it.

It's confusing how much Microsoft -- a software company -- have fumbled the ball, yet again, when it comes to software.

So you don't spend $500 now because the games suck and still wait minutes for your console to boot and start games. Or you still keep up with the bad framerates on games?
But when Halo Infinite launches, spending $500 to play that game becomes worth it?

A smart person would spend the money now.

Genuinely I think it’s awesome that they’ve added new content, added items and completed certain elements in the game. It’s the least they could but the story is the same. Its a remastered game that you can play on PS3, that’s not trolling .

I have to say I'm sat here with my XSX pre order and I'm wondering why I need to keep it...

I was genuinely hyped to play the new Halo, I got myself a one s with the hope to relive the memories of Halo 1,2, 3 and the later entries.

I feel completely deflated by the launch and can't get excited about playing games I'm currently playing on my one s....I mean I guess forza horizon 4 will look nice but its 500 that I could commit to PS5 launch games.

Cant decide. Maybe I just keep it? Tide me over until the PS5 arrives.

With PS5 you have all your bases covered.

You have 4 options:

1. Keep it.
2. cancel your pre-order so another Xbox fan gets it.
3. Scalp it on eBay or Craiglist and make a good return for some PS5 games.
4. cancel your pre-order and get an XSX when Halo Infinite finally arrives to the console and turns out to be a good game.

Even Netflix had to start pumping out new content. There's only so many new console owners that will tolerate a service that doesn't service them.

Peak concern trolling here.

Report back when games like The Elder Scrolls 6, Doom and Starfield etc come out Xbox Exclusive, day-in-date on Game Pass for free.

Edit: Oh ok, another thread of only Sony fans, and those who weren't getting an Xbox regardless, expressing concern over the Series X/S launch lineup. Guess I'll be ignoring the thread now.

”What am I gonna do on this thing?” Play games on it.

”How am I gonna show it off?” Play games on it.

Why yes, Xbox Series games can be played on One X, this has been known and well publicised by Microsoft for over a year - yet somehow Ryan has a Eureka moment reading the lineup list that Xbox doesn't believe in generations.

If he can't see the difference between playing a game in 1080p/30 and 4k/60, or in 120hz, then that's his issue.
He's disappointed there aren't any exclusively nextgen only experiences on Xbox.

And he is 100% correct. I'm glad he isn't sugar coating it. If it wasn't for Miles Morales, I wouldn't even be getting a PS5 either ( I want to experience swinging at 60fps because 30fps wasn't great at all).

No.

ES6, the next Forza, Starfield, the next Gears etc. all have the potential to be fantastic games. But unless I've missed some news, they're not launch titles.

"Those who weren't getting an Xbox regardless" is one way to look at it. The other and correct way to look at it is if people aren't addicted to nostalgia and want to play new things on their new console, does the Xbox offer that? If the answer is no, then now you know why they won't get an Xbox.

It's a strange launch for both consoles if you already have all of the current gen consoles and a decent PC like I have.

On the one hand I can play almost every big game except Demon Souls elsewhere on the other hand, because I have a huge library on Xbox and PS4, I'm looking forward to the backwards compatibility so I'm getting both next gen consoles anyhow.

When I can play the games that I interest on the PS4 pro aswell why should I spent 500 bucks on a new machine that makes no fucking sense
Saltiest guy in the thread i see...

So you're getting XSS it plays the same games as XSX right?
Why stop at PS4 Pro, base PS4 plays those games as well?

Phil is a sweet talker but he ain't a great manager. No matter what his cult says to the contrary. Just look at 343i under his watch (if the countless other stories + the fact he was head of Microsoft studios doesn't convince you). The man has a way with words - and is paid accordingly for it, but he's not a great manager. He's a very poor version of Shuhei Yoshida awarded with the job of division head.

I don't get the gamepass argument, it's already available on existing platforms is it not?

It's, which is Ryan's point. You can get Gamepass on PC, Xbox One/X etc.
