RARE..... I know I know... "Sea of Thieves". Considering the fact they were the Naughty Dogs in terms of stature of the SNES/N64 Era....yeah, that's a big drop in relevance.

Also came to say Rare. There is no better time for a viva pinata game then now...

Valve and Visceral are who I miss most :lollipop_confounded:
We haven't had a real BioWare game in ages either.

Human Head Studios totally got fucked by Bethesda during Prey 2's development, and they were never able to recover and develop another AAA game. But now they're back--as a Bethesda-owned team, Roundhouse Studios--so it looks like these boys are on their way back up.
You play Alyx?

I’d have to say Yoshitaka Murayama, but with the creation of Eiyuden Chronicles he seems to be making a comeback.

Bioware and the Doctors. They made their money selling to EA then EA ripped their love for games out of them by having them work on the Star Wars MMORPG. I thought they were making the best stuff with great characters and stories. I would love a game that gave you the fun and the twist and turns of the original Mass Effect.

- Schreier wrote an article calling the designer(Kamitani) of Dragon's Crown a 14-year-old boy
- Kamitani on twitter responded with art of 3 naked male dwarfs, implying Schreier is gay
- Kamitani apologies quickly(likely got told to stfu)
- Schreier smugly wrote another article moralizing about "sexy video game characters"
- Kamitani fell off the radar
Like I needed another reason to hate Jason Schreir. The guy is a rat fuck piece of shit who loves to dish it out but cant take the heat himself.

It’s pretty rad I gotta say. Worth it if you ever get the chance
I'd definitely like to play it. I'll probably look into getting a VR headset after I've upgraded, since maxing out newer games is more of a priority right now.

Evolution Studios!

Driveclub is still the best looking (and best to play) racing game I've played for a long time.

I mean look at those visuals. They're better than GT7 and Forza. Apparently a lot of the staff ended up at Codemasters but look at Dirt 5. Looks boring as fuckkkkkkk. Imagine if they'd been properly absorbed into Polyphony Digital. What a racing game powerhouse.

You really are not a racing fan at all, just a casual. DriveClub is among the worst driving games ever made.

Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy); his games since departing S-E simply haven't clicked with me, even though they have found some success
Ken Levine (Bioshock series); still waiting on his next project with Ghost Story Games, the guy clearly burned out and needed some time to go AFK
Fumito Ueda (TEAM ICO); same situation as Sakaguchi, but I can't proceed without giving him a mention for SotC
Prokion/Contrail (Legend Of Legaia); team basically got swallowed up into Japan Studios as PlayStation expanded, unfortunate that their team was disassembled so quickly

Yuki Futatsugi - Panzer Dragoon, Phantom Dust fame. Absolute genius. I want to lick his mind.

Now heads up Grounding, Inc studio. No clue what he's doing these days. After the Phantom Dust remaster, he's faded back into obscurity.

EDIT: Ok so he's been working with the Switch and VR apparently.

Bioware - Should have been kings of the rpg genre well into this generation. Instead they became just a soulless cog in the infernal machine that is EA. It's a good thing we have CDProjektRed and Larian Studios filling the void that was left by this once great rpg developer.

Tomonobu Itagaki - Former head of Team Ninja and creator of the Dead or Alive series. He also created probably one of my favorite action games of all time, Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox. Haven't played any of his recent work but I get the impression it wasn't well received. Dude needs a new project to wow us gamers.

Completely agree on Itagaki. Part of the issue was he was cancelled / metoo'd before it was a movement due to multiple sexual harassment claims. That made him persona non grata and led to his exit from team ninja. Then his spinoff studio just released a bunch of crap which didnt really help him create a comeback story. Fingers crossed he is able to come back because ninja gaiden and DOA havent been the same without him.

Lawrence Holland. Dude made the greatest space sims of all time and then just moved to other things. I think he makes mobile games now.

Aww come on, at least tell them the happy ending. Kamitani in 2020 finally releases 13 sentinels which goes on to critical acclaim and a game of the generation contender. Jason gets axed from Kotaku, and begins his fade into irrelevancy behind some paid-to-read website that nobody cares about after none of his faux-scoops get taken seriously.

If we can talk about developers, as in companies, my vote would be..

Genki - they worked on Tokyo extreme Racer series and some other cool mech games back in the PS2 and PS3 era, and are somehow still in business despite nobody knowing any of their games from the last 10 years. But they still have that cool "3-year-old drawing a face" logo.

I was going to say...

Brownie Brown games - all-star square-enix team leave to make GBA RPGs, but after a couple of really good titles, nobody hears from them again

.. bit after a Wikipedia searches it turns out they renamed themselves to "1-up studio" who we haven't heard of because Nintendo bought the company out shortly after, and use them as an internal development studio, and guess what they developed? Mario Odyssey and Animal Crossing! So pretty much the exact opposite of the thread, why the hell isn't 1-up studio a household name?!?!

Pete Molyneux. I know he's guilty of a litany of sins, especially when it came to over-promising, but I legitimately loved some of the stuff he came up with. I had a lot of fun with The Movies in particular, which albeit a little lacklustre in terms of the game side of things, was pretty entertaining when it came to being able to create your own movies.

Remember EA back in the 16 bit days, particularly on the Megadrive? Hit after hit, Madden, EA Hockey, Fifa Soccer, PGA Tour Golf, Desert, Jungle & Urban Strike, The Immortal, Robocod, Road Rash, etc. State of them now, useless tossers.

Lobotomy Software was another God-like developer for us Sega fans. I wonder what they could have achieved on the Dreamcast?

Rare and Treasure come to mind.

I'd also like to mention Amusement Vision. Although I'm pretty sure that group was formally dissolved. I was a huge fan of Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2, and F-Zero GX.

I really miss Quintet, but there was simply no way they'd survive the changing landscape of gaming. I wish they turned ActRaiser into a franchise and explored more lucrative genres (without selling out of course).
If Taro could do it, so could Quintet. I wish they were still around too. Would have loved to have seen what they would come up with.

George didn't fade. He is still cranking out great games. They are just very niche. 13 Sentinels is truly excellent. I already can't wait what Vanillaware does next.
Oh I know, 13 Sentinels is currently my GOTG but it’s shame that George and his team doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.

Looking at the mentioned names so far, it really looks as if if the age of the 'auteur' in the videogame industry has come to an end. This is a trend that appears to have started during the PS360 era, and seems to have found its completion this gen.

It probably has to do with the fact that AAA games have become so big and complex, and require such a large number of people and resources to make these days, that it has become almost impossible for an individual director to leave his 'footprint' on a project; at least not if a game is supposed to appeal to the mass market.

I hear ya. I think his team does for anybody that has any sense in gaming as an art form.

If he takes something on that is more “main stream” then he may get some more notoriety. (But would lose a little about what makes it all special)

True, being "popular" is not always a good thing at that point you they would have to try to force the mass appeal in their games. I mean this one of the big reason we might never see turn based combat in mainline Final Fantasy game.
