PS5 Teardown: An inside look at our most transformative console yet

Doesn't look like there's a way to upgrade the SSD.

This isn't a standard SSD port meaning IF this is the place to upgrade the HDD it'd be a proprietary drive like the XSX:

Your joking right?

My sarcasm detector is off today.

If not thats a standard PCIE NVME drive slot. Those holes are to lineup the size of the drive to secure it. NVME are different length's depending on type, and brand.

It is massive, and it is ugly as hell on the outside, but I'm really impressed with all the innovations, and just with how it's all put together. This has to be the simplest console disassembly I've seen (in recent years anyway). Thumbs up, Sony.

PS: You should have gotten a larger person do to the teardown ;)

This bad boy was designed to stand vertically.

Not really, it was designed witha centrifugal fan that is through the whole console and will shift significantly more air than radial at same speeds, much much more its not even on teh same spec sheet.

This is a high air flow volume fan beter than what we normally see in electronics..

In industry these are more common as they perform better, much better than radial - to put one in a console is just fantastic more than I dreamed.

REVOLUTIONARY.

It's big but it looks pretty good IMHO.

Off topic: So much "that's what she said" material in almost every post in the first page.

Kinda surprised there isn’t a ps branded screw in the ssd drive bay. Most SSDs I buy don’t come with a proper screw.

Beast of a heatsink with that style of fan with liquid metal thermal paste is going to get rid of the jet engine life. Now I can't crack jokes about taking off :(

It looks like it’s brass or something too. Is that to contain liquid metal?

All I saw was a cake filled with lots of tiny cakes...

Nice see the expasion ssd slot, now just need drives to use.

2TB will be almost the cost of a PS5 Digital. Wait for prices to come down in a year or so and just deal with the 665GB:

true, kind of a bummer for 665 gig ssd.

I watched the video. What an utterly pointless demand some people were making. So much pining for a teardown when it's just like any fucking computer. Fan, PCB, drives, heatsink, and power supply. OH MY GOD! The fucking world has changed now that I see this.

I'm a goddamn computer engineer, and this is completely and utterly useless. You learn nothing of importance from this. What, the cooling solution? Who cares? The damn unit has to stay as-is, in the closed case, for it to work. Knowing that it's a 120mm fan changes nothing at all.

I don't know why, but I'm now completely vexed that there were people howling at the moon for this, and spreading all kinds of FUD as a result of not having this video. A bunch of fucking drama queens. Ugh.

Oh who gives a fuck, i vastly prefer the dead pan serious demise of the jap guy instead of a loud annoying youtuber with a fucking retarded open mouth expression in the thumbnail.

you are gonna have your "trusted" inside look from "trusted" youtubers when sony is gonna send ps5 to these people.
Do we know how to upgrade the SSD yet?

It's better than the traditional thermal paste. Should last longer too.
The weird thing is that, current PC implementation does not last as long, however is vastly better. Hopefully they have different mixture of the liquid metal, so it last the whole life-span of the console.

This looks like completely standard NVMe slot.

This should shut everyone up.

It won’t.

But it should.
Specially those dual fan theorist. One fan is better anyway.

hahahaha at the fact that it requires plastic piece of shit with special screw to keep it either horizontal or vertical. What a joke.
And "dust catchers" hahahaha oh wow. They expect me to take the cover off and vacuum the holes? WEll better than nothing for sure.

Very nice of them to post this though

edit: The pcb is way too big with empty space on it, there is ton of plastic and empty spaces. The console could've been 2x smaller. They are surely preparing slim

Is that sponge there to keep it from seeping out and shorting other components?

No the cap has been removed to show you.

Wish I had your sense of humour, which consoles have dust collectors for air flow and why is it funny to you ?

Its a massive heatsink but its not liquid or a vapour chamber................sorry folks i think we are in for a jet engine again

That was going to be my first question to %99.9999 Of Neogaf members who are engineers by profession degree..

so this shit once again a commercial flight for another 7-8yrs,??? dissapoint if it happens to be the case.

yeah for sure, thankfully these things drop relatively fast. I rember buying a 1tb 2.5 inch ssd for a laptop for $900... They like $100 now

My thoughts:

  • The hidey hole for the screw in the stand and the swivel compartment are amazing, even if totally unnecessary
  • Custom face-plates are a go
  • It looks evil without the face plates and i may, depending on airflow, run it without the face plates
  • Is that a cooling fan or a drum from a washing machine. Bitch is biiig
  • Liquid metal cooling is cool.
  • The SSD is flipping tiny!

Overall a well constructed piece of kit. Japanese engineering strikes again.

Isn’t liquid metal liquid cooling?

No, liquid metal is just a type thermal compound between the IHS and heatsink, or die (no IHS) and heatsink.

I use it all the time for my custom LC builds, and higher end laptops.

Good stuff, just got to be careful with it due to the high conductivity.

Edit: Saw your other post, it stays a liquid. Which is why it's best to protect anything around so it doesn't short anything out in the long term. Best used with copper/nickel heatsinks since the gallium will start eroding aluminum etc.
