IIRC, Jez just tweeted that he was hearing similar rumblings about the overheating issues. Then Jason Schreier tweeted it was nonsense and he deleted the tweet and never mentioned the subject again. I don't even remember Windows Central making an article about it. I think he got scared to be called out by a real journalist.

I turned my wife into a gamer. Now I buy two copies of every game and two of each gaming system. Hobby is significantly more expensive. Doesn’t hurt she was the former Miss Scandinavia and may have appeared in a certain men’s magazine...I had serious game 20 years ago...
On PlayStation? Just make your PSN account primary on her PS4. Then buy the game on your profile once (unless it's disc) and you can play on both PS4 at the same time. Halves your cost for games at least.
 
Yeah, amazing how the whole Xbox camp is hellbent on playing last gen games on a next gen console. After all, they will have 3rd party games, designed for next gen, but apparently they're not very excited about that either. So what's cooking?

They don't buy games & most used app is often youtube. I don't think they are gamers over there. I was listening to podcast They hyped up bethesda yet Doom is on gamepass & is not a top 10 played game.

Always wondered why this happening. Anyone have any idea? On my launch PS4 this is absolutely mental

Well, I think as more processing is going on, the fan kicks into high gear in attempt to cool down the chips or to try to keep them cool. I guess when a game is suspended, I can see more processing needed. When at a CoD menu, no clue why that would cause it to kick into high.
 
Famitsu are schills for Sony, I read them daily they have a dedicated page for PS5 news and Xbox news is posted but not covered as much as PS5/Sony

Also just read this article (Assuming you can read Japanese)

They don't mention anything regarding temperature of the console in their description of their hands on event with PS5. They talk a ton about the controller and load speeds.
They also did not get to see a UI.
Guys from Dengeki and other sites mentioned it stayed quiet and cool.

Great googly-moogly....the game is so far away that they can't even show SCREENSHOTS and yet somehow supposedly know it runs 4k@60fps??? That is SERIOUSLY funny. No doubt that's their TARGET to hit, but I think we've already seen that going full native 4k@60fps is not only unnecessary, but not likely to happen, at least early next-gen. We'll see, but I doubt it. Wasn't Stalker kind of known for hammering desktop PC graphic cards?
 
One last comment about that "DF controversy", maybe the PS5 is closer to the 2060S than I wanted to believe...

For starter, again, the RT capabilities of these new consoles are probably more in the low to mid end of what is available on PC with RTX cards, but there's a damming detail. While RTX cards have dedicated and exclusive hardware for both RT and Tensor calculations, the GPU in these new consoles don't.
Yes, there's "hardware RT" there on RDNA2, but is just part of the CU that was tweaked, not something more that was added and works along the CUs. When the CU is doing RT calculations part of the traditional rasterization processing is decreased. So when the developer chooses to use RT in it's game he has to deal with the reality that there'll be less TF available for the game. Meaning that while for starter he have a GPU equivalent, hypothetically, to the 2080, if the uses RT for reflections this GPU will decrease a tier e become something of an equivalent to the 2070S. If he also uses RT for the shadows than the GPU will become like the 2070. If the also uses RT for illumination... you get the picture. Could this be the reason why Cerny wanted so much the higher clock possible? Because the remaining hardware not doing RT performs better working at an higher clock that more hardware at a lower clock?
That's why the developers have to use the minimum as possible resulting in lower fidelity.

But maybe this could be improved with a good denoise?
I know that these AMD GPUs are excellent in doing lower precision math, but, again, while the RTX cards have dedicated hardware to do this work, RDNA2 don't, at least as far was we know the PS5's GPU don't have. If a developer tries to improve the fidelity of the reflections with denoise this is less processing power available for the traditional rasterization.
Maybe this is an advantage that Microsoft has with the SeX, because during the Hot Chips presentation they say that they have ML hardware that is not part of the GPU.

Here's an idea for next gen console game developers... Make the games with a CRT option in mind, that way you can have games running at very low resolution but with maxed out RT and high consistant FPS.

But how many people have CRT tvs or monitors anymore?

Also in the video he said he played it at 1024 x 768. The CRT might blend in the pixels to look nice, but what about any HUD? Will it it chunky looking? Ad those CRT monitors people used to pay on maxed out at maybe 19"? If you want something bigger, you can't really do it.

Dunno, engineering's words implies that they were warned and knew about the issues, but they continued the production

From what I've read the early warnings were more about the overall production. The book does mention that engineers did voice concern about the change in solder, but were overlooked because retesting the design could cost months even if no problems were found. In either case a warning is just that, it's not a definitive fact. It's easy to paint a concern as a statement of fact when you know the outcome.

Similar with the Challenger, you could say the NASA engineers that questioned the stability of the O rings in frigid conditions were making statements of fact, because you know the outcome. When in reality they were a few dissenting voices in a room of many that decided the launch was okay.

Bach's book is very stark, it doesn't protect MS in the least. So I'm not sure why he would say so much but then change the timeline of them discovering the RRoD problem. Not that it matters much now.

MS has been very careful with hardware since, I doubt that kind of failure would ever be an issue again. They may have made a lot of the wrong decisions with X1, but the hardware has been rock solid from what I've seen. Same for the 1X and the 360 models post slim.

Though I am a bit afraid that my power brick could give out, I noticed that the X1 power brick is popular item at Amazon in almost every country, that probably doesn't bode well for my old unit. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The bandwidth is not the main bottleneck. I doubt many XBX games are bottlenecked by the generous bandwidth. The main bottleneck is the wide GPU design. The clocks only got a 56% increase and we know (from years of bench on GPUs) that performance doesn't scale linearly with the number of CUs.
I think that its cache subsystem can also be problematic.

Overheating was such a big problem they had to put two fans(one on each side) to make it work.

The problem? You're forced to place the console in a vertical position, otherwise one fan will get blocked.

Their solution? Add one curved plate on each side to prevent the user from placing it horizontally so one fan doesn't get blocked.

The problem? The PS5 is too tall, it might fall or some people might want to use it horizontally due to lack of space.

Their solution? Force the user to use a stand, which is included with the PS5. Plus, add a hook because otherwise the thing will keep wobbling all the time.

Sony shot themselves in the foot this gen.

Series X is already getting tapped out in X1X's 4K unlocked frame-rate games. Plenty of titles were running under 60fps. The bottleneck being Series X's 560 GB/s bandwidth, according to Richard. Despite a 2x TF boost, games aren't able to get consistent 2x the frame-rate of One X (more like ~1.7x on avg). Makes sense as the bandwidth from One X to Series X is only a 1.72x increase. That said, MS has confirmed to him that those back-compat titles aren't tapping into RDNA 2's architectural improvements. If back-compat games were to take advantage of RDNA 2's improvements, it'd be an extra 1.25x in favor of SX.
Is it established that 6 GB part at 336 GB/s wont affect that 560 GB/s figure at all?

Truly bizarre, you're right. Maybe that stuff isn't finished yet or something? Remember all the commercials or at least videos we got leading up to launch like the ones showing that dude getting home from work and then talking to his friends on PSN over the phone to arrange games and then getting on and showing the friends and communication features and stuff? We had a LOT more visibility to the PS4.

Now I get that this year you may have issues producing tons of content, but simple demos and video feeds would be just fine. I guess maybe they've made the calculation that they don't NEED that kind of thing and so are just waiting till people get their hands on with the consoles? It's puzzling, for sure.

You’re describing a regular engineering process as if it were a series of unfortunate events. The result of this process is a machine that runs quiet, cool, and runs games with no problems.

Would you rather they just pretend problems didn’t exist until it’s showcase time, only to be delayed after the backlash of everyone realizing it’s a subpar product? Because that’s how you get halo
