The Apple Switch or the Disney PlayStation

The announcement of Amazon Luna was oddly timed. Coming so quickly after the Microsoft Zenimax purchase. Could just be a coincidence, or it could be they were disturbed by the movement of this chess piece. Gaming is one of the most rapidly growing industries and it's no secret that many in big tech want a slice to expand their portfolios and appease their index fund shareholders.

Will we see a buyout war between big tech over the next 2-3 years that cannibalizes our beloved industry?
Google, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Disney, and MS are the only contenders with pockets deep enough for this game. Playstation and Nintendo aren't invited unless they are willing to be bought out.

Neither. Keep Apple away from Nintendo and Disney away from PlayStation. Nintendo has always seemed to avoid buyouts and I'm hoping that Sony and Playstation do well enough with PS5 that we don't have to even talk about this.
Either of those things happening would be awful.

I was a little worried the Microsoft/Bethesda thing would kick off this garbage future. However, apparently buying out shit like that doesn't fly in Japan at least.

I did. With U.S and China relations right now don't think they would be eligible to purchase but they are a huge player in the industry.
What does the US have to do with buying Japanese companies?

Apple and Nintendo both share the hardware first philosophy (as opposed to services first for the rest of sector). I can see the potential there.

Keep hands away from consoles and PC gaming. We want it just like the way it is.
I cant imagine playing games streaming only, with ads
Sadly it's inevitable...at the end of next gen physical media will be well dead and it will be digital only distribution...the temptation to silo your content into streaming services will be too big...you have Sony, Amazon, Google, Microsoft all in already...as soon as Apple tips (and I'd expect them to be the exclusive streaming home of Nintendo) we are done. (You'll be able to dl Nintendo games to little Johnny's iSwitch though)

Disney buys Nintendo, Nintendo areas in every Disneyland, and Disney characters in Smash.
Animated Pixar quality Mario and Zelda films.

Damn, I don't mind... if Nintendo Japan gets all the freedom they need regarding game development still. :)

But please leave my PlayStation alone. :p

Every company will either merge or be bought in future. There’s no way around.

Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Google will own the gaming industry in future. It’s inevitable. They have the most money and resources no one can compete.

Sony will be merged or have its PlayStation sold, Same applies to Nintendo. They might be sold or merged with another Japanese conglomerate.

Imagine Disney with the Nintendo IP portfolio.

Honestly that's the only that would excite me.

There's definitely a lot of potential in terms of what could be done with Disney's IPs. But I'd be much more worried about creativity getting replaced with focus testing and overly safe products.

In my view Disney is so focused on mass appeal and family friendly-ness to the point where a lot of their movies become less interesting, even if still enjoyable. I wouldn't want Nintendo to be forced down this path, even if there's potential with the IPs.

If Disney became willing to take chances, I would be much more on board for this.

I think it's inevitable that Sony is either bought out or forced to partner with someone with the money to compete as the years go on. I think Amazon makes sense in this scenario. Sony gains financial flexibility and Amazon gains an established partner in the gaming industry.

If everything turns out to be like you say, sadly there wont be a playstation anymore 😉

OP has them the wrong way round...

Disney Switch would be a much better brand fit, and not something you'd rule out.

Sony won't partner with Amazon. At least it's very doubtful. After the AWS talks fell apart, and Sony went with Microsoft Azure, there was a fair bit of acrimony between the two companies. It was Sony's fault as well. They wanted too much control over how their services used AWS, and Amazon weren't having any of it. Very silly move.

Forget Apple, Disney, and Facebook.

This fight is just between Amazon, Microsoft and Google.

They are the only three companies with established cloud services, which will form the backbone of streaming games technology - which will ultimately be the future of gaming (though not this gen).

And guess who has by far and away the most established cloud service of the three?

Yep, Amazon.

And given that Stadia has been an abject failure, the fight is really now only between Amazon and Microsoft - hence the Bethesda acquisition.

Problem is, Azure is way behind AWS.

How do you get to buyout war from two completely unrelated things? What does Amazon's me too streaming thing have to do with buyouts? And how does Microsoft buying a large publisher mean companies like Apple and Disney are going to buy Nintendo and Sony?

This thread is weird.

No one is buying Nintendo or Sony, much less an american company.

I dont have faith in stadia but my reasoning is perhaps seeing Microsoft and Amazon pushing hard in this direction it might reignite their motivation to invest.

I used to like the idea of Nintendo partnering with Disney as I figured we'd get Nintendo animated movies and a Nintendo theme park but Nintendo seem to be doing all of that themselves now (in partnership with Universal Studios) so fuck Disney. Stay away from Nintendo!

Apple can suck a dick too. I'm sure they're happy enough making billions selling their stupidly expensive phones and laptops to the masses. I wouldn't want their price model for hardware anywhere near my consoles.

Behind in marketshare yes, but MS has a huge advantage in gaming.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
Prob be the Sony and Nintendo channels on the Amazon thing really.

Nintendo can keep doing there own thing for a while, they got plenty going besides straight gaming.

Sony on the other hand is being held up by the gaming division. They are in trouble when streaming starts to take over, there own offer is pitiful at best.

Cloud is becoming a duopoly. Azure is growing at a significantly faster pace than AWS. It is Google which got left behind.

AWS running instances of windows for it's cloud streaming will have to pay royalties to microsoft and many other companies. It cannot be cost competitive with azure in near term. Hence sony chose Azure.

Google wanted to emulate Apple, and it lost track. It failed to crack cloud computing, gaming and subscription media. Business is too complex for an idea to work for everyone.

Imagine Disney with the Nintendo IP portfolio.

Honestly that's the only that would excite me.

Nintendo brand is as strong as ferrari. It will remain a niche and should remain as such.

Hate for anything like this to come to fruition, PlayStation needs to stick to what they do best and so does Nintendo. Fuck apple and Amazon. If gaming could just keep doing what it's been doing I'll be a happy camper.

Really don’t see US based companies buying Japanese companies. Never going to happen.

It’s not gonna happen. I know everyone is playing Fantasy Monopoly right now but let’s be real here.

So weird that people are comparing Bethesda to... Apple? Nintendo?

As Biden says “Come on, man.“

Until they SJW it up and ruin the entire fucking NIntendo catalog.

Old Disney would be exciting.

Disney in the Mega Drive and SNES days was top notch quality gaming.

The Disney PlayStation; every game is now just Kingdom Hearts.

I hear in "God of War: Slumber of 34/7 Realms: Reincarnation" Mickey rips a trolls head off.

Disney's pockets aren't actually that deep compared to the other companies you mentioned. Their market cap is 29th in the world. Apple, Google, Amazon, and Facebook are in the top 10. I would worry more about Chinese companies like Tencent and Alibaba. They have more than 3 times the market cap of Disney's and they don't give a shit about anti-monopoly laws.

Out of those two...Tencent...they are already squeezing Alibaba out of areas using WeChat and blocking Alipay as an option (But they back Epic trying to do the reverse to Apple). In cloud Tencent is behind but gaining. And of course Tencent is already huge in gaming.

Yeah, Disney has no parks functioning rightnow ( properly), no boats/vacation spots, is going to have issues creating new content for theatrical release....this may be short term or may last another 2 years....the only thing bringing money in is going to be Disney+ and merchandising of their IP. Maybe they get back into gaming but biting off Nintendo isnt going to happen, and i dont think Nin is interested...if anything Nintendo is going after Disney with a Japanese themepark (Which will also come to the US via Universal not Disney)/merchandise/mindshare of preteen areas.
