No one outside the fringe believe that. This just saved the launch and gets the fan base excited enough while they make some other moves for content before the new studios start producing. This just kept Sony from steamrolling to 85% market share.
and it’s a very good thing to gamers. More importantly it gets more day 1 games to my game pass thanks to MS money hating :messenger_beaming:

i never imagined this. MS just overnight caught up to Sony in 1st party games....man this is starting to feel like the 360 all over again. i sure hope so, minus the rrod

LOL The 360 actually launched with great 1st party games. This is nothing like the Xbox 360.

As someone who games on PC frequently, I laugh at those who have overreacted to the Bethesda acquisition news from both sides.

I think it was Ubisoft that released their software sales. Xbox sales was still third behind PC and PS4 was first. I think that is reason why Microsoft has stopped being exclusives anymore. They just don't make enough money with the sales on Xbox.

Yep, what you said is very possible. I'm just looking at software...Microsoft's main business. What did they do with their OS? What did they do with Office? So I'm speculating that LONG TERM that's where they want to go. Again, note I said LONG TERM. Some people seem to take any statement about Microsoft as an attack. Kinda silly. So why not Halo? Because it's been in development for what...4 years already? It's already in progress and also is SHORT TERM. I'm talking what I think they might do in the longer term based on you...know...the rest of their business. CRAZY idea, I know...to think a company has a master strategy that's worked for it in the past in multiple areas of tech, might do the same thing in yet ANOTHER area.

If any company would try to do it (and SUCCEED at doing it to boot!), it would probably be Microsoft. ;)

I'd never take any option off the table. But, if you aren't losing money on the console enterprise as a whole, and you are still getting subscribers from those users, why quit?

There's also the issue of Xcloud, which requires that they have a "base hardware" to work with. If you've already done the R&D for that, why not stick it in a box. 🤷‍♂️

And still further, there is the problem where if most of the subscriptions are coming from console, and you don't have a console of your own, your business is extremely dependent on another company (that can cut you off at a moments notice or create a competing product that can be better integrated into the UI, more aggressively advertised to end-users, etc.).

But certainly anything is possible from these giant companies, they can be spending billions one day and cutting and running the next. LOL

If Sony is looking to purchase anyone Capcom sure as hell would be a good purchase since they've been on fire this gen. Monster Hunter by itself would be huge for them and general mainstream appeal. From Software seems like a very natural pick if they were willing considering their relationship. Stake in SquareEnix. Bluepoint, Kojima Productions, Housemarque all seem smart. Housemarque I believe is in financial trouble so they might need something like this.
Square Enix has plateaued imo their games this gen have been pretty meh. Capcom has continued to surprise me this gen and i think they would make a great fit for an acquisition. However I kinda doubt Sony will shell out billions for a major publisher, i think they will keep their acquisitions smart and small. Bluepoint, Kojima Productions, Housemarque and From Software would make the most sense. Take-Two is way out of Sonys budget to even consider and Konami is absolute trash but i could see them specifically getting the rights for Silent Hill and/or MGS.

Capcom's net worth is only about 5 billion. But think about the purchase here. Not saying they get them...just hypothetical. They're getting a company that's on the rise growing in popularity. They already have several identifiable popular IPs currently like Monster Hunter(that's still growing), RE, Street Fighter etc. They're rather big with many dev teams. They also have a HUGE portfolio of classic IPs many of which are just dormant waiting to be revived. I actually think this is one of the cheaper best value picks they could possibly get if they did buy them at a fair price. That's a lot of talent with tons of potential IPs. They could keep the REs, Monster Hunters going and just pick whatever they want to revive. Darkstalkers, Rival Schools, Dino Crisis, Haunting Grounds, Onimusha, Final Fight, man I could list Capcom Ips all day. Their list of IPs is absolutely classic. They could be their internal hub to just grow internally to be even bigger than they are in Japan. Yeah, I know wishful thinking but it's just a thought.

Konami's net worth is actually more than Capcom so that's completely unrealistic. I don't know what the hell Konami does anymore outside pachinko machines but it must be lucrative to be worth more than Capcom. I'm looking over net worth of these companies and jesus man all these companies are deceptively rich. Nintendo is worth twice as much as the Playstation brand. Playstation is worth about 45 billion and nintendo is over 80 billion. Ridiculous. CDProjekt Red is worth more than Ubisoft and they barely make games. Must be GOG on PC. Activision is worth more than Playstation.

SquareEnix is also realistic. They're close to Capcom in worth. They're probably better of strategically buying individual studios where it makes sense especially if they'd like to keep a global presence. Capcom would be big but I'm not sure how big they'd be outside Japan outside a few select IPs. They're one of my favorite personally.

Good thing with the Microsoft buying Bethesda thing is it means Sony will continue to have a serious direct competitor. Should keep them from doing too much stupid shit.

As I've had time to think on this, its good news because it'll make them all compete more. Should make them produce better games, etc. Worst case is we gotta buy multiple boxes.

If Xbox was doing better over the last gen than they actually have been, not sure it would have made my enjoyment of my PS4 any worse. Switch's success didn't affect it, and eventually I bought a Switch for Mario+Zelda.

This is gonna be a very interesting generation. Plus....

KNACK 3 BAYYBEEE
He's coming, yea you know want more Knaaaaaackk
Here comes the monnaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy
zLGylHY.jpg

he gets bigger and smaller, cuz he got the most graphics. Cerny said so

No, I think the length of the PS5(when laid on it side) is because of the 12 channel custom SSD controller setup and the resultant performance and how you keep that cool to maintain the performance by keeping them away from each other. I think the thickness/height of the ps5 is to house a double sided heatsink - making the overclock efficient - so at worst I would expect AMD cards to occupy twice the width of now ( 1 extra PC expansion slots bay behind as well as the 1 in front) but remain the same length form factor.

On the topic of Xsx and PS5 power, now I think about it, from Cerny's post-Road to PS5 interview with DF, he made the point about a new form of optimising for power in the PS5, as a real gain, so with the power supply comparison as it is, and the shift to constant power and variable boost clocks on PS5, it will be interesting to know, what that constant power draw is on PS5, and if it is more than peak power usage from the XsX when playing Gears 5 or Minecraft RT - which should be high occupancy and high power draw.

In the event the PS5's power draw is higher by a significant amount, then the "most powerful console" claim by xbox is false (and already over) IMHO, as computational capability of the PS5's APU will only get better as the generation goes on with power optimisation - going by what Cerny said, each and every power optimization will lead to higher frequency for the same workload - because the optimisation will have reduced the unoptimized workload occupancy - or resulted in capacity for new work to occupy the freed resource by optimisation, which leads to a higher computation per watt, in either situation.
So, in essence, two m.2 slots for storage expansion instead of one? That'll be.... Interesting, if it's the case.

One of the funniest things we'll see at the end of the year in the awards season will be when Doom Eternal gets multiple nominations for multiple categories and the usual suspects will be hyping it up like "Congratulations to Xbox Game Studios! they've made one of the best games of the year!". Can't wait to see that.

You don't necessarily need to buy 100% stake at a company to be calling the shots. You just need to distribute profits afterwards :)
More importantly, on Konami's point, with them practically out of the games business what's valuable are the IP they hold. Most dev talent has left anyway.
The interesting player out there for me are From Software, if they can buy them out of Kadokawa Corp and finally tying things down w Kojima. Interesting, let's see what comes next anyway.

Is Colin just guessing? How does he know? Because all we get from Bethesda is PR doublespeak.
They did not outright say either way. My guess, there will be games that go exclusive, some will remain multiplatform. This was done right before pre-orders go live to boost them. Probably MS don't have substantial games to put another show.

Last time when Rise of the Tomb Raider was announced as (timed) exclusive to Xbox, I remember PlayStation retaliating with Street Fighter V console exclusivity at the following PS Experience. Let's see if PlayStation retaliats this news.

Man IGN is a really dumb outlet. Anyway.

If you like xbox this is fine. If you like Sony you need not worry.

I kinda believe what MS said a few months back. Sony isnt their competitor. Its amazon and google.
The boxes itself are dragging MS down. They sell at a loss again and all that money spend on a console that isnt making them any money is not spend on gamepass which is gonna make them money at some point.
I dont not see them wanting to continue in the console business. I guess they would be happy if Nintendo and Sony kept gaming exclusive hardware (and take the development, marketing and logistics cost) while they only need to sell the service. This seems much more profitable.
Right now they need the boxes since they are more widely known in the public. But this gen MS will push super hard to get as many people on gamepass as possible. Where do you think all this inclusiveness comes from? Low entry price, can use the same controller etc. They dont want people to spend money on the hardware.
And I do not think they will exclude Sony.
Sony will offer them a great platform to put gamepass on in the future. There will be deals. They already give Sony a lot of server capacity and technology so Sony can do streaming. Its absolutely within their interest that there is famous hardware out there that is connected with gaming. So they can sell their services on that device. It might seem hard to believe now. But from Sonys viewpoint it might be ok. Have gamepass on the system, earn a bit per subscriber and not having to deal with the xbox as a competitor.

We'll see how they are going to react, but I really dont think MS and Sony are competitors anymore, which is why I think you will see all the Bethesda stuff on as many platforms as possible. Not just Playstation. Its going to be platform agnostic to improve sales.

Echo the Dolphin Dev is a basement-dwelling internet warrior with no practical sense and a lot of hidden rage at the world, so it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that he thinks you can break multi-million contracts just out of juvenile spite.

I still remember defending him back when he first surfaced, since he was the target of a lot of (unjustified, I think) hatred here on Gaf. Back then, he was 'just' an indie dev. Now, he's not much better than misterxmedia and that gang.

HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 rumor is Microsoft got another announcement in their back pocket. I only heard this from 1 person. I wanted to know did you hear anything? Or is it just speculation and rumor!

Also for the record. This seems like a Megaton and Nuke Microsoft dropped today. It is somewhat a Nuke Long Term. I don’t believe Sony needs to react. This just puts Microsoft in Sony’s ball park.

Secondly I believe all Zenimax/ Bethesda games will go to Gamepass day one. I don’t think Microsoft will keep them exclusive. They have to recoup 7.5 Billion. What I believe you will see is 1 year Time Exclusive before they hit Sony’s systems. Or the bigger titles will launch on all systems. Can’t make a lot of exclusives when you have to make that 7.5 Billion back.

Remember Gamepass is designed to lock you into a subscription. Then to get you to play a game. Then to get you buy dlc and micro transactions for said game, and hope you ended up buying the game. Zenimax and Bethesda games are ripe for DLC and Micro Transactions!

PS sorry I just got around to giving my thoughts been a busy day and will be a busy morning.

Sony should buy SEGA or Capcom or both.
No they shouldn't. These huge acquisitions are also huge gambles in the long run: how would Capcom do if it published exclusively on PS5? It would go bankrupt in years, because for how large an install base Playstation has, it can't make up for PC, Xbox and Switch.

The entire Sony revenue model relies on the existance of third parties selling games on PS and paying them a platform fee, but being able to do so because they are selling to a wider install base outside of PS as well. Sony'endgame is not to own half the industry to have them make PS exclusives.

If there is anything they could and should try to snatch at all it is some failing company who is currently sitting on a vault of precious IPs they are doing nothing with, like Konami. Not a successful publisher that can make games for PS and be successful on their own.

If Microsoft decides they want to buy the entire gaming industry and completely change the rules of the game for everyone just to cut off Sony and Nintendo, making that a much more prevalent portion of their company, there is no one to stop them. But I seriously doubt that.

Sega is a waste of Money. No big IPs and no benefit to Sony. CAPCOM is great. However, I would rather Sony build their own instead of buying 3rd party publishers.
But If the point is to secure something big for a very competitive future where Microsoft is buying everything in front of it, then they better pull a big one and put 25 Billion for T2.
I still insist that buying big publishers is very risky. You buy them for their value, but once you make them exclusive you bring their value down because they don't sell as much anymore. This is dangerous. You end up with a purchase where you have to make a decision that will always have a big negative impact.

They definitely should be doing that, the future is looking more and more like consolidation and anything not grabbed might end up on a competitor's exclusive portfolio. It's kind of unfortunate, but it seems more like the end of 3rd party AAA is coming.

Yes sir, I love the choice to have replacement batteries that I can swap out in a moments notice. The double capacity over the built-in DS4 battery is another nice bonus.
This is what i mean, it's some kind of blindness with their eyes wide open. Fascinating stuff right there! i dont judge...
