CD Project was founded in 1994, way before any of them. It was basically them and Metropolis at that point. By the time Witcher 1 came out, yeah there were a small handful of others, notably PCF with the Painkiller series, which was probably the biggest international hit to come out of Poland before Witcher. Also Two Worlds might have beaten it to market by a few months? That game is not well loved but still.Poland has over half a billion USD in GDP and have a decent number of software shops there. In the games industry, in addition to CDPR, they have Bloober Team (The Medium), Flying Wild Hog (Shadow Warrior series), People Can Fly (Bulletstorm, Gears of War: Judgement, Outriders), Techland (Dying Light, Dead Island), and other smaller studios. If you look back to when CDPR was founded you can find at least a half a dozen other studios with as many games produced around that time.
They're not a publisher with a large portfolio of games. Them spending 100m on a game is really different from say EA doing it.By what metric? They're the largest game developer in Europe, they're publicly traded, they make AAA games...
They built themselves up from indie outsider status, sure, but they're far past being able to be called indie at this point.
Yeah, they're more like Rockstar, who focus on a smaller portfolio of very large games. I don't think that makes them "indie." They have an almost 9 billion dollar valuation. They're not a publisher with a large portfolio of games. Them spending 100m on a game is really different from say EA doing it.
To be fair to all involved, I played on console. No not really, it's in pretty good shape. And since I was late in the development on the Q/A team, I feel kind of hurt. I think it's the game, which shows environment really close to what it is in real world, best forest in the games ever and I am proud of the team what they...we did.
Also you know that money is not everything, you also need to have shit on time. This game with it's retail packaging or Kickstarter niceties basically employes people thought the republic and it was amazing thing to see.
It's not perfect by any means, but I am humbled to be part of that.
You may disagree or you might play game "too early" and that's fine, it's just my perspective.
Needs to sell 2,016,667 copies at $60 each to break even. Easily done with their reputation.
Hmm it was just on GamePass, sadly it left last month, because that v1.9 is prestine, like more than 6000 bugs were fixed, major bugs I mean, since version v1.0. Massive effort went into it.To be fair to all involved, I played on console.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good game. Just needed a lot more polish.Hmm it was just on GamePass, sadly it left last month, because that v1.9 is prestine, like more than 6000 bugs were fixed, major bugs I mean, since version v1.0. Massive effort went into it.
I don't want just cheap emphaty... I am just saing.
I think that you are right, however this game kind of falls into trap that with 1/10th of the budget you want to create something which is 10x more complex than any other RPG. I think that team, or we as a team, did a great job, face a lot of shit, from media, because appearantly you cannot make a game about your history, you need some diversity, which is not here even now...Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good game. Naughty Dog , Santa Monica, Square Enix all launched single player games this year that sold gangbusters. If the quality and hype is there they will be fineI fear CDPR will be in for the harsh reality that companies like Bethesda and Rockstar already noticed: kids don't give a damn to single-player games anymore...
They will tripple that overnight. Then CDPR needs to sell about 4 million copies of Cyberpunk 2077 to break even and they will sell a lot more than that. Probably they will be making profits already two weeks after release.

Wow, Poland is big in Videogame industry. All you mentioned are big triple A. They must have 100s of other smaller studiosPoland has over half a billion USD in GDP and have a decent number of software shops there. Unless it's a dumpster fire I see Cyberpunk selling that in the first week. I mean The Last of Us 2 sold 4 million in the first weekend! If that can sell that much then Cyberpunk will sell 10 million in the first 6 months easily!Needs to sell 2,016,667 copies at $60 each to break even. Easily done with their reputation.
Except it's 2.5x as much as they spent on The Witcher 3.It's not that much.
And I shall spend $700 for a 3080 so I can play it in all its glory.
3080 + $2500 oled
Damn lucky! I will say, I have played exclusively on a monitor but with these new cards having hdmi 2.1 I think I can get 1440p/120hz so it might make me look into a new tv. What would really push me over the edge is if I could somehow leave my monitor where it is at on my desk but have it still hooked up to a tv, that would take some engineering though.
I've given up on monitors for serious games, too many downsides to each type of panel.
That's the thing... the $121M (so far) is only development costs, no marketing costs included. It's already 2.5x more than The Witcher 3 had (until the release, without expansions and updates, I guess)Sounds surprisingly cheap. I bet Sony almost spend that for marketing Spider-Man.
Yeah I remember reading to not wait for the discounts, I guess they won't happen so fast?I'll get it when it's half price.
I will admit it took awhile to settle on one that came close to giving me a "TV experience". Each solution has it's pros and cons, i'd like to have both setups so I can switch depending on what I am playing.
It's probably cheaper cause Polish wages =currency are shit tier anyway.Cheaper than Star Citizen.
They might be past that point already, they said pre-orders are stronger than they were for The Witcher 3 (which had over 1M pre-orders) and apparently the most pre-orders is from China. So they need to sell more than 3 million copies to start making profit. Easy.
Yeah that's not happening... GTA V not only was released 3 times (4th launch on next gen soon), already covers at least 5 platforms (idk if Stadia also has it?) and it sold over 135M copies already... Cyberpunk 2077, on the other hand, I expect lifetime sales to be around 40M-50M copies... The Witcher 3 has sold 6M copies in first 6 weeks and lifetime sales are 28M (soon to be re-released on next gen hardware), I guess Cyberpunk 2077 will have almost twice that amount.Hope they make more than R* since they milk that shit of a game GTA5 too much , but sadly won't happen :/
that's crazy considering witcher 3 cost 25 million. It might not even sell as well as that.CD Projekt Red Has Invested Over $121 Million On Cyberpunk 2077's Development - Gameffine

Not only that the engine developments and advancements also relates to their future projects as that is what will be used. The tools developed are designed for future use as well. Besides 120 mil over 4-5 years is not bad at all.indeed 2/3 of that amount might be Witcher 4
You mean the old consoles couldn`t....But couldn't afford a third-person view.
Czech and Polish salaries are much lower than US salaries for software development. If you're looking for an average salary across the entire staff, assuming they're mostly in Poland or Czechoslovakia, your salary average expectation probably shouldn't exceed 35% - 40% of a US or Western European salary. That's why Eastern and Central Europe are so hot for software development outsourcing for US and Western European companies. To put it in perspective. 150 Engineers and designers making an average of $100,000 (made up no clue what Czech salaries are) is 15 million per year in salary alone. If this was under 100M then they paid poorly or really only staffed the thing recently.
Big games are fucking expensive.
