Do some of yall realize that this is actual anti-consumerism happening in front of us? Like.....some of you call Sony anti-consumer (it isn't), yet yall rooting for Apple here?

Uhh.. Sony requires you use them as a payment processor on PS4 too lol (as MS does on Xbox)

They'd likely not certify a Fortnite release that tried to bypass them... same as Apple basically.

How is what Apple does any different than how Sony handles PlayStation? They are both walled gardens...

could cause a lot of young gamers to see Apple as the bad guy. If some company limited my access to Mario games as a kid, I’d really dislike that company.
I've already shot down one request for a Samsung phone because of this very reason.

Kind of wondering if OT gets a thread about a Epic phone launch in the next year.

Wow this may fuck over many devs that use Mac's for Unreal Development, I understand wanting a locked down OS, but as MS have proved with Windows, its fine to show some leeway

They breached their contract with Apple, then filed a lawsuit against Apple and launched an anti-Apple marketing campaign. Apple has every reason to cease doing business with them.

The optics of the number 1 game in the world and the number 1 game engine in the world being banned from your platform (for whatever reason) can't be good.

I'm guessing plenty of legal documents and agreements were signed before they put their game up on the store. It's not like they didn't know what they were getting into. This whole thing that Epic is doing feels really gross.

What do you think Epic is doing? Is it "really gross" to fight for computing freedom? Have you read the lawsuit? Are you a software engineer?

Do you think Apple and Google should decide what software we install on our computers? Make no mistake, "smart phones" are pocket computers now.

So what is Epic's next move? saying that apple taking away their development tool access means no more support for Unreal Engine on Apple devices? that would be a pretty hard hit I presume, but would also hurt the developers already making UE powered cross-platform titles.

As much as I dislike Apple and how they do business, Fortnite is a plague and one of the worst things to happen to gaming in recent years.

I was more generalising on having a more Open OS, I mean Epic signed those terms, they should've approached this more professionally if they wanted change. Sucks for smaller devs that went with Mac's for development with Unreal, but assuming you can still use the current or older versions, they'll be fine

Anyway, I see this lasting a few weeks and being settled quietly

Oh, please. They aren't some grand hero fighting for justice. They want to make more money.

Apple taking such a big cut sucks, but it's also wierd to pressure them to stop doing when everybody else is doing the same thing. It's not like Spotify, Google, Steam and Epic themselves would all of a sudden stop taking cuts on their stores as well.

I don't understand this viewpoint. Well, I partially do. Yes, Epic breached the terms of service. Apple doesn't have to "do business" with Epic. Does that mean Epic shouldn't be able to do business with it's own customers directly on iOS? Again, should Microsoft be the gatekeepers of ALL software ever released on Windows? If the answer to the Windows question is no, then what is the difference with iOS? I have yet to see anyone who takes the stance that Apple is right here address this. The only one I've seen is John Gruber who went so far as to call iOS an "App Console", which had other fairly notable people in the computer industry publicly questioning his mental health!

What if you think the locked down nature of iOS and Android are both morally unethical and legally unsound? What action should Epic take then? They are fighting a battle that others can't afford to do.

I guarantee you there are plenty of software engineers within Apple not happy about what Apple does with its platforms.

It sounds exactly like banning Unreal Engine from all your platforms, including MacOS. How in the heck does that make sense for computing? The largest company in the world dictating what software is allowed to exist? I am hoping Apple is underestimating how this is going to reflect on them within the software community.

well couldnt epic just not allow UE support on apple products anymore?

But this may hurt epic more in the longterm than it does apple. It does seem that their bluff got called by apple.
Yes, that's precisely it.
On one hand I'm glad I may not have to support MacOS and iOS at our company anymore.
On the other hand.. the obvious.

EDIT:
At the post above from Dr Bass Dr Bass , I sign this post.
I wonder how many Epic haters or 'critics' here would say "their platform, their rules" once Microsoft would ban Steam from Windows lol

Should Apple be able to tell us what we program on Mac and iOS? Should Microsoft be able to tell us what we can do with our windows machines? People defending Apple here baffle me.

Yes, they can and already do.

If you don't like it move to Linux.

I used to have a Mac. Apple computers are terrible for games. Anybody gaming in IOS is a casual.

Epic might be biting more than they could chew, though.

I agree with this 100%. Personally, i hope this just escalates more. I hope epic keep at it seriously. This is the only way Apple will change. If no one battles them, nothing will change

Lol carry on believing that if you want.
Won't make it true though.

The only allowing apps through the app store, yeah fine. But not allowing in app purchases outside of the app store mechanism? That has literally nothing to do with security and everything to so with Apple's cut.

you dont see a security issue with anyone able to take your creditcard info and process it wherever? come on think.

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Wait it's been a while since I'm done any Apple dev, but won't an app with a revoked certificate fail to launch? So presumably people who had Fortnite installed prior to this still won't be able to launch their game from any internet-connect iOS device once this goes into effect?

Good for Apple.

I wish Sony, MS, and Nintendo would see the writing on the wall and remove Fortnite from their stores too.

Epic wants to use Apple’s ecosystem for free and is trying to make it sound like they’re looking out for consumers.

That's a bit scary for every dev who's using UE4 on Apple platforms, I gotta say...
I use Unreal Engine at work for some of our projects, and the Mac is usually an afterthought. I'll be shocked if Apple doesn't resolve this, but I really don't think it's a huge blow at the moment.

Sure, but thats not why apple dont allow it. They dont allow it cause they like their 30%. The security part is the excuse they use to not allow it.

Well no shit, Epic intentionally breached the developer agreement they signed with Apple.

Don’t be surprised when Apple remotely deletes Fortnite off devices in a few days either, it’s an app tied to a banned developer account.

Then Apple will need to be prepared to be sued for 100s of millions of dollars.

not really. it has to do with having a secure platform. having that payment bypass adds a loophole that a lot of devs will fully exploit to gain information and increase predatory microtransaction hell. It isn't all just about getting a "CUT"
But as someone who has worked on alot of ios apps I can say reguardless of that, IOS is still hell on earth for developers. the ever changing rules is a huge pain in the ass.

I'm sure that's what Apple "says" at least. Apple could allow in app direct payments if they wanted to and also be secure. Doesn't Netflix work in a similar way already?

Should Sony be able to decide who gets PS5 dev kits?

The PS5 and the Xbox are not general purpose computers important to the fabric of society and our economy. Many people ONLY have smart phones at this point and they run their lives on them. You can do your banking, your communications, your entertainment, ANYTHING you want on these devices because they are general purpose computers.

Man this thinking is absurd. Clearly not EVERY device needs to be an open platform. That's not even tenable. It has to do with the prominence these devices have in our lives.

Microsoft was clobbered by the government for including Internet Explorer in Windows in the late 90s! That was considered anti-competitive behavior. How have we gotten to this point where giant mega corps can dictate even what software can exist on their devices when there are far more mobile devices now in the world than windows machines?

Mobile devices are now FAR more important to "humanity" than Windows machines. And people here think complete control of what we actually do with them should lie in the hands of two companies? Video game consoles aren't even close to being in the same stratosphere. It's one of the dumbest comparisons and arguments you can make.

Why delete it when it will be unusable soon anyway thanks to updates, if it is not already?
